Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!

It’s November, not December!

The red is jarring!!

I’m not interested in what’s trending on the Christmas board.

It’s annoying.

It’s badly placed.

Please let us turn it off.

@JustineMumsnet

Hello all, I'm very sorry if this is irritating and I do understand the sentiment about Christmas creep. That said it's clear that Christmas does in fact come early for many Mumsnetters - the Christmas topic was our forth busiest this week, behind only AIBU, Chat and relationships, with views up 42% from the previous week.... we could look at changing it from festive red to festive green if that feels less in your face? We'll also remove it from the bereavement topic - thanks for pointing that out.
Or you know you could just bloody TURN IT OFF unless someone's opted in. The people who want to talk about Christmas know where to find the topic!
WeaverofWords · 12/11/2021 13:05

Please just turn it off all over. Bereaved people read the other boards too!

grapewine · 12/11/2021 13:11

All your statistics show is that people can find the Christmas board without having a "festive" box of whatever colour in their face.

Seriously, changing the colour is your solution? Just remove it. It's annoying.

The trending box has had 10k clicks since it was put up yesterday - there is clearly demand for it.
Borka · 12/11/2021 13:14

What's the point of having a separate Christmas topic if this stupid box appears everywhere? There are other reasons than bereavement why people might not want it shoved in their faces all the time. Changing it to green really misses the point, please get rid of it.

Yes, this.

Thank you @JustineMumsnet for the mitigation offer but I just want the option to not see it.

I avoid Christmas threads - everyone interested in them can clearly find them just fine, what problem is this solving?

Could you not just add another tab to Active/New threads?

Premium is great for getting rid of ads, I don't see why this is any different.

10k out of how many? I bet more people haven't clicked on it.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 12/11/2021 13:18

That shows nothing. I've clicked on it about 100 times unintentionally just because it fills my whole phone screen and I'm trying to scroll past it.

You also probably don't mean to but you're coming across quite bluntly in your responses to what is are perfectly valid complaints against the trending box.

ilovesooty · 12/11/2021 13:18

It's horrible.

ilovesooty · 12/11/2021 13:19

Yes I've clicked on it by mistake as I was scrolling too.

grapewine · 12/11/2021 13:19

Or, you know, some people click it accidentally because it is everywhere and huge...

I'm out.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/11/2021 13:19

If you must keep it, make it appear AFTER the comment box instead of before.

Having to scroll past it on every thread I am reading and having to see it on every page is just too much.

Ulysses · 12/11/2021 13:20

It’s making me agitated seeing it now like a constant reminded of something else to do even though I’ve got plenty time to sort abs organise things. You really need to make it so you can opt out of it. It feels as if it’s sole purpose is to move traffic to that place so advertisers pay some sort of premium there.

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/11/2021 13:20

People clicking on something doesn't indicate demand, it indicates mindless clicking behaviour. Demand is actual, you know, demand. Did anyone ask for this?

The normal trending box is riddled with Christmas threads as it is (even for those of us who have hid the topic), there's no need for an additional box.

stalkersaga · 12/11/2021 13:20

I've clicked on the damned thing by accident several times. It's hard not to.

PurpleDaisies · 12/11/2021 13:21

I hate this.
Baa humbug.

Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!

Well this is terrible logic. If it's so busy, why the need to promote it?

Christmas comes early for a lot of Mumsnetters, because they obsess about it all bloody year, to the annoyance of many others. That's why there's a separate topic for it.

Are you going to promote the relationships board for Valentine's Day, since it's so busy there too?

NoParticularPattern · 12/11/2021 13:25

How many of those 10k clicks actually remained on the board for any meaningful length of time? The number of times I’ve clicked on it by accident is ridiculous and clearly I’m not alone. I don’t particularly mind Christmas nor the box, but I think it’s pretty poor to just shrug your shoulders at people saying they want rid. If I wanted to hide it I can’t, bereaved people don’t only exist on the bereavement board you know. Never mind those who have other reasons for not wanting to see it.....

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2021 13:28

We can see that the clicks are leading to more dwell time on the Christmas threads so it's not only accidental clicks but fair enough, we'll move it to under the comment box so it's easier to ignore for those that want to!

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/11/2021 13:34

Why is it there at all? What's the point?

Why have a hide topic feature if you're just going to force a topic down our throats anyway, for no discernible reason?

Chemenger · 12/11/2021 13:34

Why is it so vital for people to look at the Christmas board? Why do you think your users are so dim that they can’t find it?

Chemenger · 12/11/2021 13:35

This is a good point, why can’t you disable this for people who have hidden the Christmas board?
Brefugee · 12/11/2021 13:49

You clearly think that it's deliberate. Well my clicks haven't been deliberate. There's a Christmas board for a reason, no?

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/11/2021 13:52

This is the normal Trending Now box at this moment.

Why on earth do we need a second one?

Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!
Viviennemary · 12/11/2021 13:58

Christmas is quite a stressful time of year for a lot of folk. I don't honestly see the point of an in your face unavoidable ad/banner over a month before Christmas. A few days before but six weeks of this. Sad
