Please turn off “Trending in Christmas” or at least make the red less BRIGHT!

It’s November, not December!

The red is jarring!!

I’m not interested in what’s trending on the Christmas board.

It’s annoying.

It’s badly placed.

Please let us turn it off.

Hi, just dropping in to say thanks for all these comments which we'll pass on.

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2021 13:00

Hello all, I'm very sorry if this is irritating and I do understand the sentiment about Christmas creep. That said it's clear that Christmas does in fact come early for many Mumsnetters - the Christmas topic was our fourth busiest this week, behind only AIBU, Chat and relationships, with views up 42% from the previous week.... we could look at changing it from festive red to festive green if that feels less in your face?
We'll also remove it from the bereavement topic - thanks for pointing that out.

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2021 13:13

@grapewine

All your statistics show is that people can find the Christmas board without having a "festive" box of whatever colour in their face.

Seriously, changing the colour is your solution? Just remove it. It's annoying.

The trending box has had 10k clicks since it was put up yesterday - there is clearly demand for it.

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2021 13:28

We can see that the clicks are leading to more dwell time on the Christmas threads so it's not only accidental clicks but fair enough, we'll move it to under the comment box so it's easier to ignore for those that want to!

soniamumsnet · 12/11/2021 15:10

Thanks for these comments and feedback, which we're looking into.

JustineMumsnet · 15/11/2021 09:36

Hiya - we haven't fiddled with algorithms to make Trending threads only show Christmas threads. The Christmas Trending box is generating a lot of traffic to the Christmas board which I suspect is partly the novelty of the new box and partly genuine interest in the topic. We're going to give it a few more days to see how things settle - meantime thanks for all the feedback.

StevenTechMumsnet · 15/11/2021 12:40

Hi folks, Sorry about all this. The Christmas overload in the right trending box was the result of an error (mine.). It should be back to normal now. We have a couple of ways "trending" gets built and I messed up one of them when making the other box (the red one.) Apologies for this. It should work as it did before now. If you spot that that's not the case let me know. We store page view counts from Google analytics locally in our DB and caches, and use them to build the trending lists. The Christmas / all threads lists weren't properly separated when I set up the red box, so there was a sort of race happening depending on in what order the scripts ran and whether you happened to load the page when one had run and not the other. The result could be that you'd see "all Christmas" threads in the regular box instead of "all threads." That would last for a few minutes at a time until the next run then the cycle would get repeated later. It should all be straightened out now. Apologies for all the confusion. I might fire myself.

JustineMumsnet · 15/11/2021 13:23

Erm I wasn't 'gaslighting' - I didn't know until today that this was what had happened.

JustineMumsnet · 15/11/2021 16:26

I didn't deny there were more Christmas threads in trending DumplingsAndStew - I said that we hadn't made a deliberate decision to make all the trending threads be Christmas ones, which we hadn't. Given the introduction of the Christmas trending box and the additional traffic to the Christmas boards that this caused, plus some feedback that people were accidentally clicking on the Christmas trending box before we moved it, I assumed that the preponderance of threads in the trending box was down to that. I was unaware of the temporary miscoding glitch.

JustineMumsnet · 15/11/2021 17:16

@DumplingsAndStew

I took your saying there were an extra 10k clicks since the introduction of the Xmas box as an explanation for more Christmas threads genuinely being trending.

Apologies for the accusation.

no problem Smile
