Hi all

We're looking at making some improvements to the Talk over the next couple of months. We've had a look at your threads in Site stuff and created a list of features you've been asking for recently. We'd love it if you could vote using the poll below please, to let us know which feature is most important to you. (You all have one vote each).

  • See OP's posts only
Ability to filter a thread to just see posts by the original poster
  • Improve search
  • Save post
Ability to favourite / save posts from other users that you like / find helpful, so you can find them again later. A bit like Instagram's 'Save' feature.
  • Edit your post
Ability to edit your post after it's gone live so you can amend any typos etc
  • Ability to move your thread to different topic
For example if your thread isn't getting a lot of traffic or if you've posted it to the wrong Talk topic
  • Quote reply
Ability to quote another user's post in your post, when replying to something they've said on a thread.
  • View all posts on one page
Being able to view all posts on a thread on one page, rather than having to click 'next page'

Also if we've left anything out, please let us know by posting below - thank you!

OP posts:

See OP posts only

omikron · 17/09/2019 06:29

All of this

See OP's posts only
Ability to filter a thread to just see posts by the original poster

  • Improve search
  • Save post
Ability to favourite / save posts from other users that you like / find helpful, so you can find them again later. A bit like Instagram's 'Save' feature.
  • Edit your post
Ability to edit your post after it's gone live so you can amend any typos etc
  • Ability to move your thread to different topic

  • Quote reply
Ability to quote another user's post in your post, when replying to something they've said on a thread.

And we need voting on the app

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 17/09/2019 06:36

Block poster option.
I honestly think this is the only forum in the world that doesn’t have this option.

MirrorrorriM · 17/09/2019 06:42

OP posts only.

It's not listed here but could we also change the search function so that answers come up with the most recent first and with the number of posts per thread. It's so annoying when you search a term (e.g. tips for going to Disneyland Florida) and you get loads of responses, but you click on some and they've only had one or two replies which were written in 2009.

AnOojamaflip · 17/09/2019 06:49

Edit (short-time limit)
Quote (even small part of a post)
Improved search - where you can search a phrase and not end up with 10735886436 results that might contain one of the words. Such as '

JumpyLiz · 17/09/2019 06:54

Please NO quote function if you can end up with multiple quotes within quotes boxes.

It melds my mind, like when those celebs wear t shirts with prints of them wearing t shirts ad infinitum Grin

I wouldn’t mind a like button.

PickingUpLicks · 17/09/2019 07:04

How would "block a poster" work if someone name changes though?
If I only blocked one person, they name changed but remained blocked, then I'd be able to figure out who it was.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 17/09/2019 07:07

picking the same way it works on every other forum. It blocks the account, not the name.

ScreamingValenta · 17/09/2019 07:19

Editing posts - but as pps have said, only for a very limited time so that people can't rewrite history mid-thread, and post should then be automatically marked 'edited at 07:17, 17.09.2019' or whatever.

2nd choice would be filter to OP

3rd choice would be all posts on one page

Not really bothered about the other options.

ScreamingValenta · 17/09/2019 07:24

@RebeccaSMumsnet

Another feature I would like

  • a customisable page that allowed you to see the most recent post in all your favourite topics, on one page - like 'active' but you choose the list of topics that appear.

This would save having to click through lots of topics and would hopefully increase traffic to less-used topics.

PickingUpLicks · 17/09/2019 07:47

So blocking an account rather than a name would mean that you'd lose your anonymity with name changes then.

If I only blocked "Joe Bloggs" and they name changed to "Twatface" then someone quoted Twatface and I realised I couldn't see their posts then I'd know Joe Bloggs and Twatface were the same person.

The reason why it works on other forums is probably because name changing isn't as easy as it is on MN

Sparklingbrook · 17/09/2019 08:03

Those wanting 'OP's posts only' presumably you have no interest in any replies on a thread or posting anything? I like to RTFT and then comment.

But judging by how many people want OP's posts only that does explain a lot.

Hopesorfears · 17/09/2019 08:22

No it doesn't mean that at all sparking. It means you can read controversial OP, note latest responses seem to be answering something else, and quickly see the OP's updates to know what is going on. Although HQ have suggested it, I don't think people really want a thread just of OP's posts, they want a quicker way to move from one to another other than endless scrolling.
And the option would also reveal OP's who have never returned, despite 9 pages of heated debate, which frankly isn't worth commenting on.

Sparklingbrook · 17/09/2019 08:23

Oh, it's for the controversial stuff, that explains even more.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 17/09/2019 08:27

picking No that's not how it works. You wouldn't see any direct replies either, obviously.

For it to work, you need a quote function which mn seems weirdly reticent to provide too.

There's no real need to change usernames. Just make a new account if you're that bothered.

If you're worried about anonymity, keep in mind that 99% of forums have this function with no issue. MN is the only place I've seen without it, even fb lets you block people.

Quote function.

And I want a Like/Dislike button too.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 17/09/2019 08:41

Jumping through to OP's updates would be incredibly useful after about, say, half a day of posts. By then no one is going to say anything unique any more and most of the thread will be the same point being made over and over (cancel the cheque), a derailing by someone else, or people placemarking for updates. But I seem to manage fine with op's posts highlighted and 100 posts per page. I'd love 1,000 posts per page but lost that option when I had to re-register after the security problems about 4 or 5 years ago.

RogersVideo · 17/09/2019 08:45

My number one choice isn't on there - night mode! Handy for those who are up with babies in the night.

I'm a bit Confused at some of the other options. Why would we need an edit button when there is already a preview button? Why we would we need to see only OPs posts when you can highlight them or do control+F? And seeing all posts on page is already a feature (all my posts are on one page). Why would we need a save post function when you can already save threads under watching?

Also please please don't add the quote feature. On forums that have it, people will quote walls of text only to say "I agree. " It makes finding actual new dialogue difficult and is so clunky.

ExpletiveDelighted · 17/09/2019 08:53

Improved search. I don't find any of the others to be a problem.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 17/09/2019 09:00

@RogersVideo - please could you explain what settings you have to view all posts on one page?

RogersVideo · 17/09/2019 09:17

@Nextphonewontbesamsung I just went into settings for the first time in years and I can't find it. Nor can I find "highlight OPs posts." How bizarre of MNHQ to remove the option while other users still get to use these features. These two things make the forum so much easier to read.

They kept "About me" and "Mates" though, which I bet absolutely nobody uses Hmm

StickyToffeeTart · 17/09/2019 09:28

See OPs post only

Spudlet · 17/09/2019 09:30

Editing, with a short time limit so people use it for typo corrections as opposed to rewriting history, should their post not get the responses they wanted. I remember when editing was introduced in another forum I used to use.... revolutionary [misty-eyes]

Please let me edit, autocorrect despises me and seeing my own typos makes my teeth itch Blush

Hopesorfears · 17/09/2019 10:08

I'm on the mobile site, I just click "see all messages" to see them on one page
