Hi all

We're looking at making some improvements to the Talk over the next couple of months. We've had a look at your threads in Site stuff and created a list of features you've been asking for recently. We'd love it if you could vote using the poll below please, to let us know which feature is most important to you. (You all have one vote each).

  • See OP's posts only
Ability to filter a thread to just see posts by the original poster
  • Improve search
  • Save post
Ability to favourite / save posts from other users that you like / find helpful, so you can find them again later. A bit like Instagram's 'Save' feature.
  • Edit your post
Ability to edit your post after it's gone live so you can amend any typos etc
  • Ability to move your thread to different topic
For example if your thread isn't getting a lot of traffic or if you've posted it to the wrong Talk topic
  • Quote reply
Ability to quote another user's post in your post, when replying to something they've said on a thread.
  • View all posts on one page
Being able to view all posts on a thread on one page, rather than having to click 'next page'

Also if we've left anything out, please let us know by posting below - thank you!

OP posts:

Search

ChicCroissant · 16/09/2019 21:18

Another one here who would like the ability to block individual posters.

There are no bookmarks on MN for me (desktop version) so some way of marking a thread would be really useful.

glitterbiscuits · 16/09/2019 21:20

Search.

Runbikeswim · 16/09/2019 21:29

See op post only

Toooldtobearsed2 · 16/09/2019 21:35

Oh god, if you could improve the search function I would be overjoyed.
It is worse than useless at the moment, which only adds to the same 'new' posts being trotted out ad nauseum.

Should be number one priority. But i do love the OP only posts being shown......

LadyOfTheCanyon · 16/09/2019 21:42

OP posts only please

Improve search especially on mobile app where a lot of threads pop up as if visible but then you see they were 30 days only. Why are they still there???

I'm against an edit function because it will mean a delay in posting, so while people are in the 2/3 minute act of editing their post, other people are replying to the unedited one. I realise that you could make the edits visible, but in threads that regularly go up to 1K posts, nobody had the time for that.

BIWI · 16/09/2019 21:51

@ChicCroissant I use the desktop site and can bookmark!

ChicCroissant · 16/09/2019 22:32

Where is the bookmark option for you on the desktop site, @BIWI? I just have to remember which page I'm on Grin

BIWI · 16/09/2019 22:35

Ah. I don’t have pages so probably a different version of MN. Classic?

SilveryMountainStream · 16/09/2019 22:36

See OP's posts only

  • Improve search
  • Save post

Definitely these three things, would be a massive improvement and really useful. And to be able to do it in both the app and the mobile site via safari.

Sparklingbrook · 16/09/2019 22:43

The only one i might use on that list is the edit function but it would have to be timed.
Really, really don't want a Like button.

ChicCroissant · 16/09/2019 22:54

I think I just have the standard layout, but that may be something to experiment with tomorrow, thanks for the tip Grin

PenguinBlizzard · 16/09/2019 22:54

See OP's post only or jump to new OP's post would be better

bananasandwicheseveryday · 16/09/2019 23:11

I like the thought of being able to drop my typos and I agree there should be a time limit. But as someone who uses my phone to access the site, I think it needs to be up to around 15 minutes to allow for editing longer posts - it can take me about that long to type out a long post.

I already have OP's posts highlighted and have 100 posts visible on a page. Like @SleepRegression , I'd like to be able to add a thread to my watch list without having to bookmark, scroll all the way to the top of the page.

Graphista · 17/09/2019 00:46

While I've been a victim of my own typos I actually agree people shouldn't be able to edit. I'm concerned, particularly in the current political climate that people may change the meaningful content of posts.

If you're gonna post something controversial - barring breaking TG's you should be made to stand by what you said!

Other than that:

See OP's posts only
Ability to filter a thread to just see posts by the original poster YES PLEASE

  • Improve search DOUBLE YES PLEASE ITS BLOODY AWFUL AT THE MOMENT!
  • Save post
Ability to favourite / save posts from other users that you like / find helpful, so you can find them again later. A bit like Instagram's 'Save' feature. YES
  • Ability to move your thread to different topic
For example if your thread isn't getting a lot of traffic or if you've posted it to the wrong Talk topic YES
  • Quote reply
Ability to quote another user's post in your post, when replying to something they've said on a thread. OMG YES PLEASE
  • View all posts on one page
Being able to view all posts on a thread on one page, rather than having to click 'next page' ALREADY DO THIS you can change settings to this. I use the app and do this fine

Can I add another?

I'd really like the option to go to my last post on a thread rather than having to scroll through to find "where I was up to" I end up either missing stuff or reading (many times) the first lines of several posts I've already read until I get to where I had read up to. Bookmarking doesn't work and I don't think is available on app?

I haven't been able to login to the site on my phone since the last security issue when we were all logged out and had to sign in again! I'm not sure if it's an issue with my phone or mn site, I have asked, started threads etc but still no answers

"For the odd times that I name change for sensitive stuff, it would be really useful to have a 'always post under this name on this thread' box that could be ticked." Definitely! I find it really odd that it APPEARS to be possible to name change in the "post new message" window but that it's actually not possible here - even a "are you sure you want to post under a different username?" Prompt would be good

"Sorry MNHQ but when tech take such a long time to fix issues on the site which are still unresolved, shouldn’t you be spending time making sure the features you have work properly rather than rolling out new stuff which will inevitably then break?" I'm afraid I'm thinking this too! They don't have the best track record! Certainly at least change ONE thing at a time and make sure it's working first!

Tojigornot · 17/09/2019 00:51

OP’s only please!

But also quoting. This would hopefully stop the incessant ‘@ ing’ replies that make threads impossible to follow without constantly scrolling back to see what the OP is actually replying to. Drives me loopy.

30to50FeralHogs · 17/09/2019 01:03

No edit function - people should just double check before they post. It’s not that hard even though I regularly have to correct myself in subsequent posts . Obvs we all make mistakes, but having an edit function would open the forum up to all sorts of mischief, with people posting something to get a certain type of reply and then changing their post to make it look innocent.

I’d appreciate better search results and maybe a time limit on threads that are brought up to avoid zombies being awoken.

I often have a name change fail, so I like the idea a PP suggested, of keeping to one username throughout a thread or at least a reminder to name change again when replying on the same thread. If the name couldn’t be changed within a thread it would help prevent sock puppets too. Not sure if that’s technically doable, but it would save me having to report myself on a regular basis Grin

gostiwooz · 17/09/2019 01:03

I'd quite like most of those actually.

30to50FeralHogs · 17/09/2019 01:06

I agree, since the introduction of @ ing people, many posters seem to not bother to paste the quote, they just reply to a poster with an @ and the rest of us have to scroll back to see what on earth they’re replying to. Plus it’s all very well saying you can turn off the email notifications for @ ing if someone is using it annoyingly, but it can be helpful to be summoned sometimes. But some posters use it incessantly even when they’ve been asked not to @ by particular posters.

DuchessOMalley · 17/09/2019 01:15

Jump to OP's next post rather than see only OP's posts

Monty27 · 17/09/2019 01:23

Is the poll above working or are you polling by posts?

GreatBigNoise · 17/09/2019 01:26

1 View all posts on one page

2 A "jump to next OP's post" type of thing

3 Hide posts from a particular poster

I don't want the ability to edit posts - that would cause mayhem and shenanigans.

BIWI I already can see all the posts on one page! Am I special?
I used to be able to but after the hacking incident I reregistered. I was passed off to lose the all posts on one page featureS. Did you keep your old account?

GreatBigNoise · 17/09/2019 01:31

The thing I would like to see the most is proper consistent moderation including evenings and weekends. I'd like any improvement in reducing trolls. You currently seem ok with allowing harmless 'funny' troll threads - 🤷🏻‍♀️

SusieQ5604 · 17/09/2019 01:35

See op post only. Also why not an up or down arrow?

LiveInAHidingPlace · 17/09/2019 01:36

Blocking. WTF is up with not being able to block people, literally every other forum has this feature.
