We’d like your help testing a new release of the Mumsnet Talk App 3.0 (beta).

This app is for iPhones and iPads on iOS8 only at the moment.

We'd love it if you can give the app a good workout - using it as you normally do - to read and post in Talk. please do bear in mind that the app is still in beta version, so some things may not work perfectly. We have made a few changes since our last test release.

Sign up for Talk app testing here

You can use any email address to sign up.
You need to be logged in to sign up. (If you can't see the sign up page, make sure you are logged in.)
It is LIVE. Any posts you make will be seen on the Mumsnet site for all to see. We'll send you an invitation to download the app (it will arrive via the TestFlight service).

Talk app users

This app will replace the current Talk app (2.1) on your phone if you have it.

Recent beta Talk app testers (Testflight 1.0)

If you have been involved in recent app testing, you will end up with two app icons (1.0 & 3.0) on your device. You can uninstall the previous beta app (it will stop working this week).
If you previously signed up for this - but didn't accept & download the app - you will need to sign up again.

Please do give us your feedback on this thread.
Many thanks Flowers

I've just downloaded it. Shiny!

How do you flip threads?

And why are some poster names in pretty colours and some in grey?

Otherwise seems better than the old app so far.

geekaMaxima · 09/09/2015 21:11

I agree with a pp who would like a night mode for all those times you're mnetting in the dark.

I'm in the dark right now beside a small child, and while my dark purple colour scheme is ok for lists of threads, I'm being utterly blinded by the white text boxes of posts.

A low-contrast night mode colour scheme - maybe with light text on a dark background throughout - would be lovely.

RustyBear · 09/09/2015 21:33

Mermaid - the underscore is on the second screen of the keyboard when you're in the username/email box (see screenshot. Oddly, when you're in the password box, you get a different keyboard layout with the underscore on the 3rd keyboard screen

And on the iPad the keyboard is different again!

Simurgh · 09/09/2015 21:41

geekamaxima

Could you maybe play with accessibility options? (eg the Invert colours on an ipad - I don't know whether that's the same on an iphone if that's what you're using?) That seems to work fine so - how much work must have gone into this thing hardly bears thinking about?

RustyBear · 09/09/2015 21:42

Palaeontologist - to flip a thread tap the double arrow on the right hand side of the white bar at the top. It doesn't remember it though, you have to do it each time you return to the thread

RustyBear · 09/09/2015 21:47

I just dim the iphone screen when I'm in a dark place - it's really quick to drag up the Control Centre from the bottom of the screen and lower the brightness slider.

Though I do like the dimmer function on my alarm clock app - it dims if you drag your finger down the screen and if you do it again it asks if you want to go into Night Mode 9which is dimmer and doesn't have the screensaver pictures)

SouthWestmom · 09/09/2015 21:47

So I don't think it's very user friendly. I am having to guess functions - I can't refresh active and had to guess re: flipping the thread.
I might miss the op's and my posts on longer threads without the highlight box. BlushThanksBrew just found some icons oh I like this better

How do i mark my position in a thread, like the bookmarks on the browser?

Simurgh · 09/09/2015 21:56

It doesn't seem to be massively intuitive but they've actually crammed a heck of a lot into it. I'm guilty of always wanting my cake and eat it whereas there's bound to be a certain amount of compromise on an App. I'm pleasantly surprised by how well they've actually done.

Simurgh · 09/09/2015 21:58

See the arrows next to posts? Swipe one of those from right to left and that will bring up some options, one of which is bookmarking.

"given that she [Bridget Jones] barely managed to function as an adult"__
_
To repeat how do i bold a paste?_

RustyBear · 09/09/2015 22:06

To bold tap on the T just under the message box. Then you can
choose Strikeout, Bold Italic or underline. If you choose bold, the T turns to B to show it's active; when you're done with bold, tap the B & choose T for plain text (or whichever other format you want)

bigsnugglebunny · 09/09/2015 22:31

I'm on, it's very slick and I like it but i have a couple of niggles so far:

I find the font gives me a bit of a headache - it's too big and thin, and I'd quite like the option of white text on a dark background.

Also, the parent board of the thread I'm looking at isn't clickable - so if I access a thread in AIBU via active threads, for example, I can't get into AIBU by clicking on the top of the thread.

HistoryRepeatingItself · 09/09/2015 22:45

I also would like my post AND the ops to be more obvious. When the thread is long you can wizz too fast and miss it.

I miss search and PM too.

MsJuniper · 09/09/2015 23:17

I'm on and love the look of the new app, nice and clear and unfussy. I agree with others that it would be preferable to see more thread titles at once on screen.

Main request is My Topics. My absolute favourite thing about the previous app and would love to see it in the mobile and web versions too. Please please please? Smile

Ooh I like the emoticons BiscuitBrewWineThanksCakeStarDragon

MsJuniper · 09/09/2015 23:25

Oh! I have found My Favourites in Topics! I am happy now. Well done MN Grin

OberonTheHopeful · 10/09/2015 10:03

Just discovered favourites as well Smile

An odd thing though: until last night the beta app was working very well. Then today it crashes immediately when I try to open it. It does however work fine when I launch it from within TestFlight (using it now in fact).

Is it possible that the expired beta is still installed and the app icon (for some reason known best to itself Grin) is now pointing to it?

Groovee · 10/09/2015 10:11

Where's the local pages? It used to be near the work topics?

ScrambledSmegs · 10/09/2015 12:20

It only works on the app?

This is some sort of conspiracy plot, isn't it?

££

Simurgh · 10/09/2015 13:02

I can't see them anywhere, Groovee. (Doesn't mean they're not there somewhere of course.)

SavoyCabbage · 10/09/2015 13:34

I'm struggling with the refresh in active. I'm pulling it down to refresh and the little icon is spinning like it's doing something but it's just not refreshing. I'm having to close down the app and start again.

I'm not keen on 'reply'. (Fussy). I'm not replying when I post. I'm posting. Joining the conversation. Perhaps in aibu it could be 'pile on' like they used to shout at school when there was a fight!Grin

Overall it's good. I'm enjoying using it.

FelixFelix · 10/09/2015 15:30

Thank heavens I'm able to test this app! I've hardly used MN over the past couple of weeks as I just can't get on with the mobile site.

The only problem I've found so far is that when you click a link someone has posted then come back to the app, it refreshes the whole thread you're on so you lose the place you were at. Very annoying if it's quite a long thread.

FelixFelix · 10/09/2015 15:33

Oh and I don't like how I have to scroll right the way up to the top of active convos to refresh. There should be a button to press or something.

I like how easy it is to flip a thread.
