Would this freak others out?

Because it did freak me out a bit I guess.
Early days but I’m seeing a guy who honestly seems amazing. I’m not the most self confident person and I feel a bit inferior but that’s obviously my problem and not his fault.

Anyway I went to stay over at his for the first time this weekend and whilst the place is beautiful he had some weird stuff around which made me feel uneasy, like old style weapons. And we’re not talking about a nerdy 18 year old basement dweller but a man in his 40s with a good career and really good manners.

I did ask about them, and he explained that it was a hobby. He seems a bit eccentric which is fine, but I think I just don’t understand the interest and it made me feel a bit vulnerable if this makes sense?

He hasn’t given me any other reason to be wary, apart from me wondering why he’d be interested in me considering that we are quite different in some ways, but super compatible in others. I really like him and he seems really keen, too. I don’t want to make this awkward but I think others would find this a bit weird too?

Old style weapons like replicas?

What, like guns? Swords? Crossbows?

I would be very put off if it was WW2 German stuff but less so if it was a sword or SMLE (Short Magazine Lee Enfield)

Is he or was he a re-enactor?

More details needed. I have some historic swords for decoration, it never occurred to me that they might freak out visitors.

Sorry I’ll try to describe. Yes swords and knives or daggers, bow and I think 2 cross bows. It’s the cross bows that I found really unpleasant but I can’t explain why. Maybe because there have been a few cases where people used them in attacks and I just find them creepy and that there is no need for something like this. And a weird looking horse whip which was gross too.

No guns, ww2 stuff or anything like that or else I would have left.

Of all the things in the world to be into, no need for a bloody crossbow in your home (too many horror films says NOPE).

I wouldn't like that either. Bit too "combatty".

Ask him more about his interest in them. If you aren't satisfied with further explanation, it's not going to work.

People collect all sorts of things that can be misconstrued - if you let it.

I probably would not go back. We’d be too different and like you, the cross bows would be particularly off-putting. Not that it matters (because I think you should throw this one back) but what’s his professional background?

I’d hate that. I don’t enjoy any form of violence or thought of violence so wouldn’t want to be with someone who enjoyed collecting weapons. Probably a harmless hobby but not one I’d want to be around.

What was the hobby?

I wouldn't be freaked out, I'd be curious.

The crossbows really make me nervous too and I can’t put my finger on why.

How were they stored? Like displayed on walls and in cases and cabinets and stuff? Or did he have literal machetes etc scattered randomly about the property?

I also would worry that you may be giving signals that you are feeling insecure/have low self esteem, which can be very appealing to men who are not very nice.

I’ve known a few men who brought knives back from holidays, I think it’s weird but seems fairly common for people to be into them so that wouldn’t bother me much. But the crossbow would make me uneasy as I’ve recently watched Apex. I’d feel weirder about that than some old gun I think and I’m pretty anti-gun
