Would this freak others out?

Because it did freak me out a bit I guess.
Early days but I’m seeing a guy who honestly seems amazing. I’m not the most self confident person and I feel a bit inferior but that’s obviously my problem and not his fault.

Anyway I went to stay over at his for the first time this weekend and whilst the place is beautiful he had some weird stuff around which made me feel uneasy, like old style weapons. And we’re not talking about a nerdy 18 year old basement dweller but a man in his 40s with a good career and really good manners.

I did ask about them, and he explained that it was a hobby. He seems a bit eccentric which is fine, but I think I just don’t understand the interest and it made me feel a bit vulnerable if this makes sense?

He hasn’t given me any other reason to be wary, apart from me wondering why he’d be interested in me considering that we are quite different in some ways, but super compatible in others. I really like him and he seems really keen, too. I don’t want to make this awkward but I think others would find this a bit weird too?

He has a dungeon and you are going to be his sub eventually, unless you get there first with one of the weapons.

As pp said, my first thought was Graham Dwyer.

Catwalking · 28/07/2026 09:48

Son nearly 40 has had interest in swords & knives, more for practical pov… so, for how to live off land in apocalypse type situation I suppose.
However, any weapons he has (was professionally trained to shoot & fish as youngster) are completely locked away & no suggestion of him even owning these objects in house/outbuildings (locked gun cupboard hidden away with difficult access to it).

OriginalSkang · 28/07/2026 09:49

I've probably spent to much time talking to men on dating apps, but I would presume that anyone displaying a whip on their wall was into BDSM

I don’t know why but Graham Dwyer is coming to mind. Unless anxiety is a real issue for you, gut instinct is very valuable.

Just googled him, that poor woman. (He murdered a young woman, Elaine O'Hara.)

I think you get a prize for the most mumsnet reply ever.

I don’t know - the PP suggesting a Clare’s law search in response pipped it to the post, I think?

Am wondering whether having a man-shed full of shears, scythes, chainsaws and other traditional and high powered electrical equipment would elicit a similar response. Met some very weird gardening types in my time.

TheOccupier · 28/07/2026 09:51

Always trust your instincts. You don't need permission to end this relationship.

Megifer · 28/07/2026 09:57

Id find it really cool tbh but I have a small collection of similar things. As a pp said youre allowed to find this weird and end it.

I think this is the issue - on some level this man doesn’t gel for you. His weaponry hobby is just the excuse the conscious part of your brain is looking for to step away.

You can end it for any - or no - reason.

viques · 28/07/2026 10:03

I can’t see why anyone would need one crossbow. Let alone two.

Have you read We Need to Talk About Kevin?

Not read the book but watched the movie. Didn’t have a clue what I was going into and it’s one that I recommend to everybody now. It just stayed with me on so many levels.

Strawberrryfields · 28/07/2026 10:10

Owning, displaying and having a keen interest in weapons? No thanks. What’s wrong with stamps or coins?!

I’d find this incredibly off putting and creepy. Trust your instincts.

If things got serious with this guy would you want these things in your home?

Inmyuggs · 28/07/2026 10:13

We all have likes and collections
Your perception to his collection isnt nessarily right is it.
Least he has interests!

they're completely boring? 😂
It would blow your mind if you realised that there are WOMEN who collect and display weapons too! Often with a theme, but weapons.

If you are uncomfortable, go and meet someone else. Neither of you are creepy.

gamerchick · 28/07/2026 10:14

Meh I've a collection if replicas and whatnot. I covet a crossbow but haven't bothered too hard to get one. I can shoot both crossbows and bows quite well in a controlled setting. So you would probably be weirded out a bit in my house Grin

You don't need a reason to not date someone OP. If it doesnt sit right. Just end it. Don't do the thing where they have to get rid of stuff to be with you

SpaceShark · 27/07/2026 23:05

Wow. Is everyone on here so neurotic? I can't get my head around it.

Because every woman who is aware of the world is afraid of violent men. And this guy is giving signs that he may be one.

OP, big corporate job, very confident, as PP said he may enjoy that you feel a bit insecure and intimidated... it gives Patrick Bateman vibes.

banmusk · 28/07/2026 10:49

I've heard that those high up in the corporate world are highly likely to have psychopathic traits.

Seems perfectly normal.

😂

Whatonearthwoman · 28/07/2026 11:05

Not related but there was a woman locally that was decapitated by her partner with a katana. He also collected weapons. I wouldnt date someone no matter how sane they came across initially.

Cooking must be quite hard in your house.

5128gap · 28/07/2026 11:19

I'd be honest and tell him straight that they made you uncomfortable. He then has the option to put them away somewhere, or to decide that his rights to display them are more important than pursuing a relationship with you.

why? genuinely confused by this, you don't cook with a katana

LostThestral · 28/07/2026 11:20

but no, it wouldn't bother me.

DH has a couple of air guns & ornamental swords & he is by no means a psychopath

PrincessofWills · 28/07/2026 11:26

Mansionscoldandgrey · 27/07/2026 22:42

Has he got one of these in the garden?

Oh I love trebuchets ❤️

Walkaround · 28/07/2026 11:30

Seems very weird to me. I would not feel comfortable getting close to someone with an obvious interest in violence and the means of inflicting it - it’s all a bit too sado-masochistic in flavour for my liking.
