Would this freak others out?

Because it did freak me out a bit I guess.
Early days but I’m seeing a guy who honestly seems amazing. I’m not the most self confident person and I feel a bit inferior but that’s obviously my problem and not his fault.

Anyway I went to stay over at his for the first time this weekend and whilst the place is beautiful he had some weird stuff around which made me feel uneasy, like old style weapons. And we’re not talking about a nerdy 18 year old basement dweller but a man in his 40s with a good career and really good manners.

I did ask about them, and he explained that it was a hobby. He seems a bit eccentric which is fine, but I think I just don’t understand the interest and it made me feel a bit vulnerable if this makes sense?

He hasn’t given me any other reason to be wary, apart from me wondering why he’d be interested in me considering that we are quite different in some ways, but super compatible in others. I really like him and he seems really keen, too. I don’t want to make this awkward but I think others would find this a bit weird too?

Modern crossbows? I'd be outta there in a heartbeat!

And a woman is killed by a man in the UK every three days on average.

There are plenty of hobbies out there without needing to fetishise a bloody cross bow.

Oh grow up. How many victims of domestic abuse die by crossbow? And remember - 1.5 million men are subject to DA too.

JoyousWriter · 28/07/2026 14:23

As long as he doesn't display them over the fireplace.

What? Surely one is too many! Or must we have ten a week for you to think they are dangerous weapons?

I never leave the house without a knife and a multitool I must be a murderer.

Well if you're a tradesperson fine, not so much if you're a sahp.

I bet the men's forums are full of chaps worrying about whether their date is safe or is potentially going to murder them.

Cop on.

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 28/07/2026 14:56

Jeez, owning a penknife or a multi tool is slightly different!!? Surely? You are not leaving the house with a crossbow! I’d be a bit unnerved too. I mean what’s the point? And they are certainly not cool. Would make me question his character for sure.

Any man who has a whip on the wall isn't a good one

Nah. I know plenty of nerdy men with a bullwhip and fedora.

And plenty of people enjoy a bit of whipping in sex. Doesn't make them bad people.

No - I’m just someone who wants to have tools to hand when they need them. It’s called being prepared.

Well, that's your interpretation, mine is different.

A guy obsessed with horror films (which usually include a lot of misogynistic violence, with honourable exceptions) would make me think twice as well.

Violent men don't lose control, that's what they want you to think. They know exactly who (when, where and how) they can be violent to. They don't hit their bosses, do they?

Hysterical, near delusional, and bonkers. This whole thread.

Would you feel safer if you went to a guy's house and found he had a big collection of teddy bears?

Frankly, that's when I'd be shitting myself.

What about going to the house of a guy who has nothing creepy? Crazy idea, no?

Misogynist violence is bonkers, we are just bringing it to light in this thread. Shoot the messenger if it makes you happy, it doesn't make the problem disappear.

FloydPink · 28/07/2026 17:16

Nothing wrong if it's a hobby - I have a WW1 bayonet at home, bought by my dad. I am not a serial killer or anything (in any case I have a big hammer and sharp kitchen knives that would do that job!)

I used to have WW2 stuff as well as I am into that.

This. I am widowed with no geographically close family so I need to be independent.

Never, ever accept an invitation to visit Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor at his home in that case...

creating young serial killers since 1890!

(although I am not sure the kids range existed from the start 😁)

I have 2 Opinel knives and love them! I like that they have a safety lock too.

What on earth do you need to carry a knife and a 'multitool' for. Being prepared for what exactly? Do you live in the wilds, like to catch your own tea perhaps?

WhatNextImScared · 28/07/2026 18:36

I wouldn’t see him again personally.

When a white van man passed too close to me overtaking and left my wing mirror dangling, I was able to secure it enough to use it to get home. When i worked in the community for the NHS I used my multitool for shortening walking sticks, adding new ferrules and installing equipment.

godmum56 · 28/07/2026 18:47

it occurs to me that I am doubly risky. I collect knives and teddy bears....you'd never know it to look at me!

Just googled him, that poor woman. (He murdered a young woman, Elaine O'Hara.)

He did and presented a very polished urbane facade to the world while being incredibly cruel to and ultimately murdering poor Elaine.

What a staggeringly passive person you must be, wandering through life forever dependent on other people for anything at all and utterly unprepared for the slightest change in the normal and predictable world. I am sure you're in for a shock someday :)
