As in they didn’t look or act how you expected them to, or they completely weren’t the type you expected?

All the time. I always assume people’s partners will be good looking, regardless of what they look like, then am surprised when they’re not!

ShoeeMcfee · 20/08/2025 18:46

Yes, I have a few times.

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · 20/08/2025 18:50

Yes.

We had a manager at work who looked a lot like Ronnie Corbett and was roughly the same height at about 5ft 2" ish.

I saw him at an event with his wife and she was the spitting image of a very tall Grace Jones, well over 6ft tall.

DiordreBarlow · 20/08/2025 18:52

My client's wife turned out to be my old french teacher.

AnAudacityofinlaws · 20/08/2025 18:53

My friend and former colleague is a beautiful, glamorous, clever, successful woman who is self made from a poor background and a couple of rubbish relationships. Provided for her kids as a single parent etc. Her husband is a creepy predator who you don’t want to be alone in a room with. So disappointing when she deserves a nice man.

carmak · 20/08/2025 19:00

I had a very beautiful friend, spoke occasionally to her husband on the phone. He was a university lecturer, lovely voice and manner.

I baby sat one night for her and met him on their return, he looked like Catweazle. He gave me a lift home and was rather sleazy. Shock

This was a very long time ago, I'm still shocked by it!

Endofyear · 20/08/2025 19:03

Yes! I know so many beautiful bright funny women with insipid, boring or full of themselves partners 🤔 I guess they must see something in them I don't!

iirbRosb · 20/08/2025 19:04

Constantly to be honest; more so when they’ve been married a long time and I wonder how they got together in the first place.
I know people are the same about me and DH as we are opposites

pizzaHeart · 20/08/2025 19:08

Quite a few times, and most of them are divorced by now.

PresidentMacron · 20/08/2025 19:20

Oui! Bien sûr! Everybody else's femme is plus jeune!

(Mais, j'ai eu une bonne note!!!)

Are their partners attractive though?

I find it most surprising with the couples who’ve been together years too.

I know a man who’s tall, good looking, and when I met his wife she looked like the former Post Office boss, Paula Vennells. I’m sure she’s a lovely woman but I was a bit surprised that’s who he’d chosen.

Lived in halls at uni next to a girl who used to talk endlessly about her boyfriend back home ...she made him sound totally dreamy....he came to visit her one weekend, I was genuinely taken aback and had to hide my obvious shock at seeing him...

MayaPinion · 20/08/2025 19:53

Yes, one of my good friends waxed lyrical about her gorgeous new boyfriend, James. On and on and on she went. When I met him about 6 months later (I lived abroad) he looked like the spawn of the unholy mating of Mr Bean and Mr Tumble - all big sandy puffball hair and no chin. He was a slimeball to boot. They were invited to my wedding and the night before my friend called me in tears because she’d found out he cheated on her. How he managed to get two women to sleep with him I have no idea. I was straight on the phone to the wedding venue to get them to remove his place setting.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/08/2025 19:59

The way my ex colleague spoke about her partner we all assumed an elderly overweight curmudgeon like say a Jim Royle and we were all like what the….when this super fit silver fox turned up. They were a total mismatch as well it has to be said.

2025mustbebetter · 20/08/2025 20:01

People are often surprised at my husband. He's very metal with a huge beard. And he also looks older than me but he's actually the same age. I'm a bit alternative and quirky but still very different to him 🤷🏻‍♀️ kids at my school have seen him and say he's really scary lol. I think that's why people are surprised as he's quiet and reserved but with the way he looks it comes across as scary.

I am frequently surprised by other people's husbands and wives. My manager's husband is surprisingly geeky and a bit funny looking.

I knew one of those. 'he's soooo gorgeous' she would tell us for hours on end.

He was not 🤣

ShoeeMcfee · 20/08/2025 20:06

O yes, I've had some of that! My friend at work described her DH as looking like Leonard di Caprio. Spoiler: he didn't. Not one bit.

ShoeeMcfee · 20/08/2025 20:10

But also, I used to work with an extremely pretty woman, by anyone's standards. She was bright, and could have got any man she wanted. One day she brought her DH into work with her and I honestly didn't mean to do it but I was shocked at his appearance and I probably looked it, too. But everyone at work was the same, sort of staring and puzzled. Very odd.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 20/08/2025 20:11

@ShoeeMcfee maybe he does, in the dark?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/08/2025 20:12

All the time, normally it’s along the lines of what on Earth does she see in him 🙈😂

I always find it more surprising when the man is the more attractive one as well. Usually it’s the opposite. The couple that surprised me the most was this handsome guy and then a woman who looked very homely and had rotten teeth!! I’m sure she’s a nice woman but I couldn’t help feeling surprised.

School friend of dd2 was really tall - I mean borderline freakishly tall. Having only ever met mum, who was about 5ft4 I assumed dad must be a giant. Nope, shorter than me.

MaryBerrysFannyHammock · 20/08/2025 20:14

Had a work colleague like this, talked endlessly about her gorgeous fiance.

He looks like shrek got squashed with quasimodo.

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say 😁

Hahha. Have you never seen any of the opposite case, so a gorgeous man and a goofy or plain Jane woman?
