Am I being abused?

Verbal Abuse A wonderfully non-hysterical summary. If you're unsure, read the whole page and see if you're on it.
Emotional abuse from the same site as above
Emotional abuse a more heartfelt description
a check list Use this site for some concise diagnostic lists and support
Signs of Abuse & Control Useful check list
why financial abuse is domestic violenceAre you a free ride for a cocklodger, or supposed to act grateful for every penny you get for running the home?
Women's Aid: "What is Domestic Violence?" This is also, broadly, the Police definition.
20 signs you're with a controlling and/or abusive partner Exactly what it says on the tin

Books :

"Why Does He Do That?" by Lundy Bancroft - The eye-opener. Read this if you read nothing else.
"The Verbally Abusive Relationship" by Patricia Evans ? He wants power OVER you and gets angry when you prove not to be the dream woman who lives only in his head.
"The Verbally Abusive Man, Can He Change?" by Patricia Evans - Answer: Perhaps - ONLY IF he recognises HIS issues, and if you can be arsed to work through it. She gives explicit guidelines.
"Men who hate women and the women who love them" by Susan Forward. The author is a psychotherapist who realised her own marriage was abusive, so she's invested in helping you understand yourself just as much as helping you understand your abusive partner.
"The Emotionally Abusive Relationship: How to Stop Being Abused and How to Stop Abusing" by Beverley Engels - The principle is sound, if your partner isn't basically an arse, or disordered.
"Codependent No More : How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself" by Melody Beattie - If you a rescuer, you're a co-dependent. It's a form of addiction! This book will help you.
But whatever you do, don't blame yourself for being Co-dependent!

Websites :

So, you're in love with a narcissist - Snarky, witty, angry, but also highly intelligent: very good for catharsis
Dr Irene's verbal abuse site - motherly advice to readers' write-ins from a caring psychotherapist; can be a pain to navigate but very validating stuff
Out of the fog - and now for the science bit! Clinical, dispassionate, and very informative website on the various forms of personality disorders and how they impact on family and intimate relationships.
Get your angries out ? You may not realise it yet, but you ARE angry. Find out in what unhealthy ways your anger is expressing itself. It has probably led you to staying in an unhealthy relationship.
Melanie Tonia Evans is a woman who turned her recovery from abuse into a business. A little bit "woo" and product placement-tastic, but does contain a lot of useful articles.
Love fraud - another site by one woman burned by an abusive marriage
You are not crazy - one woman's experience. She actually has recordings of her and her abusive partner having an argument, so you can hear what verbal abuse sounds like. A pain to navigate, but well worth it.
Baggage reclaim - Part advice column, part blog on the many forms of shitty relationships.
heart to heart a wealth of information and personal experiences drawn together in one place

Thanks fool, a star as always! Don't think we'd all have been champing at the bit as much without Tis's horrible situation. Sad I know she's here in spirit, so .

Onwards and upwards to Number 20!

Bertiebassett · 14/04/2013 18:50

Yes...he's really gone...2 years of misery followed by 15 months of hell...but I'm finally free.

DS and I got back from holiday today (hence I've completely missed out on the last thread...sorry everyone) and he went while we were away.

He's only living a mile away and I will obviously still see him regularly because of DS...but I can finally relax. DS and I have just been running round the house laughing and being silly. I haven't been comfortable enough in this house to be really silly for such a long time...if that makes any sense.

Now I have to start redecorating/changing/ replacing everything in the house to make it mine...

kittybiscuits · 14/04/2013 18:58

Great news Bertie :)

Nothing to report, just popped on to offer support and Flowers

ponygirlcurtis · 14/04/2013 20:44

Am popping champagne for you Bertie, that's fantastic. I can't believe how long you survived holed up in your room night after night. But you've done it. You are free - not entirely, of course, because he will still always be in your like unfortunately and still always be a FW unfortunately, but this must feel like a new chapter for you. Enjoy being silly with DS, enjoy your home being your home once again, and enjoy this new start for you and your gorgeous son.

bountyicecream · 14/04/2013 21:04

Bertie another one thrilled for you. It is so uplifting to know that women can and do escape :)

butterflymeadow · 14/04/2013 21:13

Excellent news, bertie, I know what you mean about silliness. I love being silly with the kids.

Just a note for tis, was thinking about your post on colour charts which cheered me up on the last thread. I guess the point is thinking about the future and making our own choices. All the fwittery is an attempt to stop that. Owning, recreating, finding one's space is so important.

arthriticfingers · 14/04/2013 21:27

Go Bertie go :)!

MrsMorton · 14/04/2013 21:56

Hello bertie I've been following your story for ages and I just wanted to say that I'm so pleased you've got your house to yourself. It must be like a physical weight has been lifted!

FairyFi · 15/04/2013 13:08

news of course!

betterthanever · 15/04/2013 13:47

Had no internet all weekend. So sorry to hear about tis if her FW is still reading - what a big brave boy you are NOT and your allies will see through you very soon.
Bertie such great news hope you have started collecting wallpaper samples.
Pony I am back in court in a couple of weeks but will keep strong. FW will not be impressed but fingers crossed the cafcass person at court feels the same as the one on the phone and at least my own sol. didn't give me the hard time I thought they may about the change of position. This may be point people start to see him as a real FW - do you think they will? Tis if you are lurking do you think it was the mention of police that made him get so mad and tell you he knows you are on here?
