3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ support thread 2016

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those parents involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. Flowers

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas.

ImNotChangingMyUsernameAgain - do you know roughly how many candidates get called back at Habs? Is the second round mainly to assess the parents? Thanks for your advice.

Second round bt 60-70 girls.
It's difficult to say with parent interviews. Your child is in there with you so a number of factors: child- parent interaction,
Family unit, parent knowledge of school (it's not a test! But general awareness)
This methid of elimination in round 2 is very new only started last year.

Hi, I am new here and seek for advise.
Actually my DD was born in end of Aug.
She is a lovely and bright girl, however she did not get any 2nd round of both north schools.
May I ask will they really consider DOB? We live very far(planned to move if she got offer) and not very good area, she went to local nursery...
Do you think location and parents backgroud will affect their decision?
Many thanks

Anyone doing 7+? IT's so hard all this waiting...!

Sh888 · 13/01/2016 10:17

Yes, waiting for 7+ for Highgate (letters mailed out on Friday) and Channing who have said that they will email this week as early as possible - still waiting, can't bear it!

Also waiting for Channing 4+.

supermum2016, I would say no as they would have already taken her DOB into consideration when making a decision. Parents' background and residence mostly do not factor into their decision, especially when there are 300++ candidates applying and they have the luxury of choosing the most academic.

Anyone going for 2nd round at NLCS tomorrow? Any idea on what to expect? Mumteacher can you help?

Supermum2016 I believe they do take into account age factor as my friend's dd is in one of the schools and in her class there are quite a couple of August babies.

Report
ImNotChangingMyUsernameAgain · 13/01/2016 13:33

There is a spread of birthdays. My DD's class only has 2 September - November birthdays but has 7 June - August birthdays. Almost two-thirds have birthdays in the 2nd half of the year, so having a late birthday should not adversely affect your chances.

When choosing between 2 equally strong candidates, then DOB comes into play with the younger one getting heavier consideration. Even as a summer baby, one still needs to make the cutoff scores.

As far as I understand it, at NLCS the girls are assessed in groups with others of the same birth month or thereabouts- so an August born girl would only be assessed with July and August born girls. They are not looking for the same things in summer born girls as they are in winter born ones.

supermum2016 · 13/01/2016 14:08

Thanks, Angel, but that day, I talked with some mother, they have May born child in the summer born group...May be not many summer bonre child this yr?

Report
angelpuffs · 13/01/2016 14:45

May born children are summer born- though I wouldn't have expected them to be assessed with August born girls. Was the May born girl in your daughters assessment?
If so, I can only imagine they would expect
more of her than of a July/August born girl?

Report
supermum2016 · 13/01/2016 15:03

Yes Angel, they are in the same group. May born girl was crying and does not want to get in. At least my DD was excited (happy) and enjoyed the games. We did not prepare her much. After reading this forum. I found actually many family prepared long time. We will never know their rules to pick up, because you can not see and none of them provide feedback.
I think we will try 7+ again, I believe by that time will be much academic and clear what your DD should achieve.

Has anybody heard from Channing? According to their letter the second round starts on Monday 18th so i was expecting the results coming out by latest today... but maybe the 'no but no thanks' letter was posted today to arrive tomorrow :(

Interesting supermum. I was told they assessed with girls only a month age difference- apparently not! Where else did your DD sit for?

When did channing start doing 7+? They never used to. Is it since they went dual form entry? Or is this for a chance vacancy?
