If someone claimed to be the Son of God today…

If someone claimed today all the things that Jesus did/said, would you believe them?

Curious about how people would respond in today’s world.

Would I believe them? Claiming to be the son of god… nah not likely. Would need some pretty hefty convincing. Not sure what would get me there to be honest.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/12/2024 23:05

I’m not sure he did or whether he just did loads of amazing things and someone said ‘he must be the son of God’

But that's why he was killed. For claiming to be the son of God.

niadainud · 13/12/2024 23:06

Well it didn't go very well for David Icke.

Oh I don’t know then

UnnervingYetCaptivating · 13/12/2024 23:15

There are a couple of people I know who I’d believe but as for anyone else claiming that I’d probably laugh.

JetskiSkyJumper · 13/12/2024 23:27

I dunno. I think I'd trust whatever my instincts told me.

I guess it would also depend on if you actually believe in god or not too!

JamMakingWannaBe · 13/12/2024 23:33

I think there are too many Gods in our multi-cultural / multi-faith world. Are they the son of Christian God or another, or newer, God? In "Biblical" times, a charismatic preacher could establish a following - especially if they were considered a healer (no modern medicine) too.

Modern society is so much more cynical - however see how Trump (charismatic personality) has amassed a faithful following.

I would wonder why God has not sent a daughter this time.

Birchlarch · 13/12/2024 23:47

I'm not sure it really went that well for him last time.

Thegreatestoftheseislove · 14/12/2024 02:10

No. The Bible has made it clear that when He returns it will not be as gentle Jesus, meek and mild - an otherwise non descript baby, boy, man seen only by a few and for His arrival to be spread by gossip or mutterings on social media. This time around EVERY eye shall see Him. He will fulfill the role of Israel’s Deliverer and King, and the whole world will mourn for not recognising Him and His sacrifice the first time around. See Rev 19 There will be no room for doubt that He is here. Praise God!

Oh, fuck, it IS Donald Trump, isn't it?! 😱

Derren Brown. I want it to be Derren Brown. He can do all the things! He does explain that they're tricks, but they're so bloody clever. Maybe he's getting an invisible helping hand? (I'm 100% sure he doesn't want to be worshipped, though ... which brings us back to the giant Wotsit in the White House.)

😂😂😂

Tristar15 · 14/12/2024 03:39

Of course not. Jesus wasn’t the son of God either because God doesn’t exist.

desperatedaysareover · 14/12/2024 03:46

I’d be interested. What would he have to say that Jesus didn’t?

Mammyloveswine · 14/12/2024 04:28

I'd be waiting for him to turn my water into wine...

BeccaS34 · 14/12/2024 04:40

A lot of people claim it but they’re generally cult leaders who want your money. Maybe I just watch too many documentaries 😂

I think the reason people liked Christianity is that it represented a reversal element. It developed into a belief system where instead people of sacrificing to a god, god sacrifices himself for you. And there’s a heavy emphasis on doing good works and seeking to cooperate/reach consensus.

It starts off as fringe sect but ultimately it offered people something they saw as valuable. Most people who portray themselves as Jesus (cult leaders still do this) are focused pretty explicitly on control and money. They’ll like build a big estate for themselves and demand unpaid work from others, but they don’t really offer comfort or act pro-socially in the way the Gospels portray Jesus as doing: living simply, healing and feeding others etc.

leia24 · 14/12/2024 04:47

People in psychosis, especially men, do sometimes claim to be the son of God or delivering a prophecy etc etc. They're detained in a secure ward so make of thar what you will

Like who? Who would you believe?

SirChenjins · 14/12/2024 09:32

I wouldn’t - but people believe anything these days so I’m sure many would.

TrippTover · 14/12/2024 09:34

No because I don’t believe in God therefore how can he have a son.

I do however believe that a dude called Jesus existed back in the day but he was a Derren Brown type (but not as transparent, clearly).

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 14/12/2024 09:36

I’d settle for the casting out of devils and the healing of the long term sick.

Grantanow · 14/12/2024 09:37

Son of who?

Fannyfiggs · 14/12/2024 09:39

If we were at a party and had ran out of wine and someone made our great tap water into a nice sancerre blanc he would certainly be celebrated as some sort of god. The god of wine maybe?

DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole · 14/12/2024 09:42

Did you see that mini series The Second Coming when it was on in 2003?

It was brilliant and starred Christopher Eccleston. No idea if it's still available anywhere and it will have dates due to lack of social media back then but it was gripping and really well done.

If he started preforming miracles then people would definitely sit up and take notice. But he'd probably end up in some government lab being experimented on 😅
