Your very first thought when you saw your baby?

Hi ladies (and some gentlemen)!

Having no children myself yet, I have always been curious about the first thought that comes through your mind when you first see your baby. And what better place to ask than MN!

So please, I would love to hear your thoughts... from the cheesiest ("He's the most beautiful angel in the world!") to the funniest ("Gee, it looks like a blob!" - Angelina Jolie with daughter Shiloh).

Thanks in advance!

Had to come back to add that my thoughts with the other 2 babies were:

DD2: "God you're long! And red-haired!" (which sadly didn't last, as she had my grandmother's aubrun hair but it's gone blonde now).

DD3: "This is how it's meant to be" as I caught DD3 under her shoulders and lifted her up myself (after DD1's em c-s and a bad PPH after DD2). I love that midwife who helped me do that. Then "Jesus, you look like DSis!"

Mistymoo · 30/09/2009 09:37

DS: Wow he looks like his dad.
DD: Wow she looks like her brother.

I should feel something - I don't

What do you mean red hair???

CarmenSanDiego · 30/09/2009 09:40

In reverse order:

DS: 'OMG, it's an actual baby! I actually did it!' (He was a HBAC following a very long labour) and then for some reason, I was very concerned with whether or not he had a cute bottom

DD2: 'She's very purple. She looks like a Ribena berry baby!'

DD1: snoooooore (C-Section under general anaesthetic, not really aware of what was going on afterwards

ShinyAndNew · 30/09/2009 09:41

dd1 - Fuck what I am meant to do now?

dd2 - She's big

colditz · 30/09/2009 09:42

Ds1 "Oh god, he's really heavy, give him to his dad!"

Ds2 "Arf, he's got a widdle double chin just like me!"

BornToFolk · 30/09/2009 09:42

A combination of "thank fuck that's over" and "oh my god, he's grey! and HUGE!"

mrsjuan · 30/09/2009 09:42

"Wow, she's here"
"She's sooo small" (5lb 7)
"Oh, she's weed all over me!"
All in quick succession.
Tried to tell the midwife that she'd done a wee but I don;t think she understood me - she said "yes, she is wee isn;t she but she'll soon grow!"

starwhores · 30/09/2009 09:47

DC1... Oh my God he's only got one eye, he's so lovely. (he only had one eye open)
DC2.... (After coming round) He is so tiny
DC3... She's massive
DC4.... I need to hold him

TBH I was overwhelmed with how much I loved each of them instantly and thought they were so beautiful.

viennesewhirl · 30/09/2009 09:47

DS1 and DS2 - deranged mixture of exhausted relief and soppy falling-in-love noises:
"Oh my God, thank God he's out, hello darling!, Jesus that hurt, I'm never doing that again, hello sweetheart, you're beautiful!" etc etc

aurynne · 30/09/2009 09:47

HAHAHAHAHAHA I am laughing out loud at some of these thoughts! Please keep them rolling

ElectricElephant · 30/09/2009 09:51

"Oh my god, a baby!"

Total shock and amazement combined with massive relief that the labour was over.

BroodyChook · 30/09/2009 09:51

With DS1 I remember thinking: You look so familiar!

With DS2: God, he seems terribly annoyed at being here!

DS1 - why is he purple, rapidly turning into, oh my god, he is ok?
DS2 - he's so quiet, why isn't he crying?
DD - she looks NOTHING like her brothers

Schmaltz also prevailed - lots of awe, amazement and gratitude. I was on a post-birth high for days after the birth of all of my children.

comewhinewithme · 30/09/2009 10:02

With dd in May I remember thinking "ohhh your all warm" .

orangina · 30/09/2009 10:03

When I was given dd (dc1), I just said "No wonder I;ve been so knackered for the past 9 months, look what I made!"

Effilump · 30/09/2009 10:03

Thank fuck thats over! Where did all that hair come from, loads of dark hair, ( all my others were bald with a few blonde wisps) And then wow, look at those cheeks! They were huge!

throckenholt · 30/09/2009 10:06

Am I the only one who doesn't remember ?! I have done it 3 times I an have no memory of what I thought at all for any of them

tattycoram · 30/09/2009 10:09

Why are his fingernails orange? Did anyone else's baby have orange fingernails. But apparently I rang my best friend while still off my tits and told her how "handsome" he was"

piprabbit · 30/09/2009 10:14

No orange nails, but DD did have little pointy tufts of black hair on the very top of her ears. Made her look a bit demonic.

BertieBotts · 30/09/2009 10:17

"Fuck, he's so big!" (He wasn't huge, only 6lb 11 but I had been pushing with the head not crowning for hours and the actual pushing out bit didn't take long and so his head felt smaller than it was. If that makes sense.)

Yes, I remember cuddling him and the wriggling feeling familiar I almost had deja-vu - holding this slippery newborn baby was suddenly exactly as I'd imagined, even though I was not aware that I'd imagined it before. He didn't cry and I remember not feeling worried, because he looked absolutely fine and was breathing. Then he made this adorable chirruping noise for a while, which he has never made since.

Then about 5 minutes after he was born I said "Wait... nobody has checked he actually is a boy!" (He was )

BertieBotts · 30/09/2009 10:18

Oh and also something about how much he looked like his Dad, he was a miniature version

PuppyMonkey · 30/09/2009 10:19

Phil Mitchell

That was my first though on DD2...

She improved with age....
