Your very first thought when you saw your baby?

Hi ladies (and some gentlemen)!

Having no children myself yet, I have always been curious about the first thought that comes through your mind when you first see your baby. And what better place to ask than MN!

So please, I would love to hear your thoughts... from the cheesiest ("He's the most beautiful angel in the world!") to the funniest ("Gee, it looks like a blob!" - Angelina Jolie with daughter Shiloh).

Thanks in advance!

Oh sorry - the very FIRST thought?
O no is he going to be ok... why does that midwife have a needle? Why is she coming towards me with that needle? I'm not strong enough to run away right now.
To midwife: "Can you just leave that to heal naturally please?"
Midwife: "No, we just need to sew up a few tears quickly."
And then - "Give me the gas and air again!"

spiderlight · 02/10/2009 00:16

'Is that him?? OMG, he's got a really pointy chin!' (He hasn't, but for some reason that was the only bit of him that made any real impression in the initial few seconds).

cheeseandeyeballsarnie · 02/10/2009 00:18

dd- i was so out of it(had GA) i wondered whos baby she was

ds1-he looked like william hague but i thought how proud my parents would be that there was a boy!they had 4 girls,i named him there boy name

ds2-cant actually remember, is that bad!?my excuse was they said 'weve had a slight accident with your bladder' straight after he was born.

My first words about DS were, is he ok, followed by - is it a boy or a girl (he was in some trouble inside me) didn't find out for 5 mins as they were busy working on him.

My first words to him were "We are going to have so much trouble with you" - but said in a very loving way!

Anngeree · 02/10/2009 09:58

My 1st words (about the birth) were "That wasn't too bad think I'll be able to do that again!"

On looking at Ds "He's a bit grey!" ( He needed oxygen.)

Then when I held him in my arms I told him I'd been waiting to meet him for ages & that i'd love him forever.

LimburgseVlaai · 02/10/2009 14:04

Me: "What is it? What is it?"

Bored voice among crowd of medics, out of line of sight: "It's a baby."

Still not sure whether I imagined that - DH didn't hear it.

Sunfleurs · 02/10/2009 14:16

With ds I didn't see him for ages because something ruptured and I had to be stitched up by an emergency team but I couldn't hear him crying so I sent exh to be with him and make sure he was ok. I couldn't stand the thought of him not having a Mum or Dad with him if something was wrong.

With dd - "you look exactly like your brother!" She did as well, it was like giving birth to twins 4 years apart.

Greatfun · 02/10/2009 20:29

Both DH and I thought our two were ugly. DD was placed on my tumt and I distinctly remeber thinking "OMG, You are really quite ugly". Both DH and I discussed how ugly DS was whilst we were in the delivery room

It's OK. We think they are beautiful now and love them to bits. They have improved with age.

mama2leah · 03/10/2009 11:36

dd1- is she ok, is she ok- crying my eyes out ( was told she was very ill)
dd2- oh my days, that was quick...she weed on me, oh she is so cute..oh the hell does she looklike? the gas and air dibnt even kick in? can i still have some.

lol

mama2leah · 03/10/2009 11:40

dd1 jus remember, she peed all over the doctor, yipppeee! she only has 1 kidney

bratley · 03/10/2009 12:10

where did they get that from!? (as they we're about to put him on my tummy)
He's so heavy(when they put him on my tummy)

'Is he ginger??' (we had 2 names, depending on what colour hair he had as DH and I couldn't agree on 1 name! lol)

Anifrangapani · 03/10/2009 12:15

dd- eeeeeeeeeeek it is a girl ( at the scan we were told she was a he) closely followed by plese breathe.

ds - thanks to the midwife who was a good catch. Saved him landing on his head.

BiancaJackson · 03/10/2009 12:22

It was 'Is he/she alright?' with both of my babies. Followed by 'He's huge!' with my boy and 'She's so fair!' with my DD (I'm white, DH is black and you honestly would've thought I'd cheated on him when DD was born with blonde hair and pale skin (paler than mine!)...luckily she is the spit of him a year on ).

NormaSknockers · 04/10/2009 21:59

DD - Complete & utter silence for about 3 minutes, I just kind of went into shock, followed by "She's definately a girl isn't she?" as I was paranoid the scan was wrong!

DS - "I can't see him, what's he look like?" as it was an EMCS & I couldn't see him as DH was standing up holding him.

Sibella1 · 04/10/2009 23:43

DD1: Oh no a baby now what!!! Is it really my baby? (I was sure they swapped her in hospital - was really ill from pethidine and also sent her away when they brough her to me - lifelong guilt!)

DD2: I want to hold her, give her to me right now! (Bonded straight away with this one - took a while with DD1 but now love them both and think I have the most beautiful, clever girls in the world.)

KiBe · 04/10/2009 23:46

Is she ok? (over and over as no one would answer, she came out blue due to 2 full knots in umbilical cord but was fine after a few minutes)

then

yay she's here, i can't believe it! and she's totally beautiful

what on earth are we going to call her? we had boys names picked out but no girl names decided

KiBe · 04/10/2009 23:48

oh and also "i would do that again" - although would hope not to have episiotomy next time! i was hoping for lovely hypnobirth, but ended up with lovely epidural instead! all due to induction

rachyh85 · 05/10/2009 00:03

same as bettymum! totally. i remember saying to everyone 'she really IS beautiful isnt she, im not just saying it am i? she really is the most gorgeous little thing ever!'
her first photos show a blotchy little purply red squashed up face but it must have been foresight, cause she really IS the most gorgeous little girl...

Tee2072 · 05/10/2009 07:52

My God, he looks like Winston Churchill!! (he really did, DH agreed with me)

And then, to DH 'look what we made!'

BikeRunSki · 05/10/2009 07:57

I was really chuffed that he had red curls (my dad did and was very proud of them, and none of his 4 children or other 4 grandchildren did)- 2 days later when we washed his hair we realised it was just blood, and his hair is actually poker straight and beautifully blond!

troutpout · 05/10/2009 14:10

With ds:
'I'm going to be sick'

With dd: 'oh my god it's a girl! i don't do girls!'. Then: 'i'm going to be sick'

whensmydayoff · 05/10/2009 14:31

OMG a blue boy (emerg CS)
Oh no, why is he so small, what's wrong (nothing, he was 3 weeks early and just under 6lbs).
Oh no he has DH's big nose!
He now looks nothing like his daddy - or his nose!
Baby #2 due Jan, still praying that big hooter doesn't end up on my child - at vanity!

katiek123 · 05/10/2009 15:22

'he looks like a squashed frog. DAMN.'

SuperSoph73 · 05/10/2009 15:27

After emergency cs wiht DS1 & not seeing him for the first time until about 6 hours later the initial thought was "OMG what have I done???" and then once I'd calmed down "We did that, that's amazing."

With DS2 VBAC "My god, he's purple!!!"

bumpsoon · 05/10/2009 17:54

Ds1 - is it ok ? can i go to sleep
