Your very first thought when you saw your baby?

Hi ladies (and some gentlemen)!

Having no children myself yet, I have always been curious about the first thought that comes through your mind when you first see your baby. And what better place to ask than MN!

So please, I would love to hear your thoughts... from the cheesiest ("He's the most beautiful angel in the world!") to the funniest ("Gee, it looks like a blob!" - Angelina Jolie with daughter Shiloh).

Thanks in advance!

DS1 - he's just perfect
DS2 - he just looks like he's sleeping (stillborn)
DS3 - OMG he's DS1 (and DS2) double

He's perfect.

And he was, with the most beautiful, earnest blue eyes I had ever seen.

ds1: LOOK< an ACTUAL baby (i think i said this too!)

ds2: please, just breath

dd: God that was hard. Oh, look, you funny little purple thing

PurlyQueen · 30/09/2009 15:59

I was so off my face on gas-and-air that the midwife could have handed me a kitten and I'd have been delighted

fruitful · 30/09/2009 16:10

dd - oh! its a baby! where did that come from?

ds1 - oh! he's crying, he's breathing, thank God! (as they whisked him off to NICU)

ds2 - oh, so many tubes, I hope he's ok (looking at the photo dh brought me). I can't actually remember the moment when I saw ds2 properly for the first time - he was 48 hours old by then, I'd just got out of ICU and was exhausted, it's all a blur. I've got a photo of it but I can't remember what I was thinking.

norktasticninja · 30/09/2009 16:13

DD - OMG OMG that colour is all wrong. Breathe baby, breathe.

She was whisked away to another room and it felt like a lifetime before I knew if she'd made it or not.

DS - Thank goodness! He's pink! He's breathing! He's pissing all over me! What beautiful ears

fruitful · 30/09/2009 16:19

What about first words though?

Because I spent 3 months on the antenatal ward while pg with ds2, and the coffee machine was right next to the birthpool room in the MLU. So I got to hear quite a few women greeting their babies. Almost all of them said "hello" as the first thing. You know, lots of yelling/mooing accompanied by encouragement from the midwife followed by a pause, a wail, and then "oh hello!" by the mum.

. Was lovely. Made up for all hours of other people's labours that I had to listen to ...

pud1 · 30/09/2009 16:19

thank god thats over... can i have some tea and toast

Fanjita · 30/09/2009 17:59

When they were taking DS to be cleaned up and I was in recovery from emergency C-sec I said "watch him" to DH as I was worried about him being swapped with another baby! (I blame all the drugs.) However, as 10 lb 11 oz he was pretty identifiable so needn't have worried too much

aurynne · 30/09/2009 19:35

Hi all,

I think that, when I have my first baby, I'm going to be thinking of MN when I see him/her!

Don't worry, I've never felt the vocation for journalism. Some people here are a tad paranoid, methinks, LOL.

DS1 I thought 'Fuck my fannys fell out' but said 'OMG hes got feet!'

I meant to say the most perfect little feet!

DS2 I thought 'get him out of the water' (water birth)

With DD I though 'thank god shes out'

But followed closely by 'omg they are perfect etc...'

tinierclanger · 30/09/2009 19:39

I very seriously said that DS was 'empirically' the most beautiful baby you could imagine. I think I really thought I had assessed him scientifically.

randomeuro · 30/09/2009 19:42

First thought was "Is he ok?" (was premature) immediately followed by "omg, I hope they take very good care of him, I love him so much" as he was whisked off to Neonatal.

FrayedKnot · 30/09/2009 19:48

Thank God he's out.

Without having to have forceps / ventouse.

Then after that I can;t really remember until I got onto the ward.

FrayedKnot · 30/09/2009 19:49

Think my experience may have been similar to PurlyQueen's tbh.

Strong stuff that G&A.

giddykipper · 30/09/2009 19:51

Phew.

That it was over and DS was OK.

TheCrackFox · 30/09/2009 19:52

DS1 - "I knew it would be a boy"
DS2 - "christ he weighs a ton". Immediately after he was born they threw him on my tummy. He would 9lb.

UnrequitedSkink · 30/09/2009 19:57

He doesn't look how I imagined! He's bald!

pointydoug · 30/09/2009 20:00

I felt pretty blank. Exhausted. Just wanted her out.

Mousey84 · 30/09/2009 20:01

I had a c-section and being a bit loopy and recall asking the midwife if it was still snowing outside, while looking at my dd in the wee cot beside me. I knew she was mine, but didnt really realise, if you know what I mean!

I thought ' Blimey, that babys purple'

ciforjif · 30/09/2009 20:34

Had twins by c-section.
DD1-ooh she's got big bags under her eyes. And then I felt really sick and I thought I was going to be sick all over her.
DS1 arrived and I really can't remember what I thought just bewilldered.
Feel really bad about that.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 01/10/2009 07:58

That isn't mine. GA with CS, dd born at 08.50 me waking up at 18.30. DH tried to convince me but I wasn't having any of it. She looked like Chairman Mao for about a week. I did wander around the ward looking for my girl, I had to accept that she was the only western child there so she belonged to me.
I was absolutely astonished that she had both fingernails and eyebrows.
