Your very first thought when you saw your baby?

Hi ladies (and some gentlemen)!

Having no children myself yet, I have always been curious about the first thought that comes through your mind when you first see your baby. And what better place to ask than MN!

So please, I would love to hear your thoughts... from the cheesiest ("He's the most beautiful angel in the world!") to the funniest ("Gee, it looks like a blob!" - Angelina Jolie with daughter Shiloh).

Thanks in advance!

OMG she's so pink and round! And she's the spit of my mum!

NinthWave · 01/10/2009 10:22

"Oh shit, he's not breathing and he's blue and he's not making any noise..."

He was fine - just needed a few puffs of oxygen and a rub down, thank god

Misspaella · 01/10/2009 10:54

DS1 -
"It's a boy"
"Is he ok?"
"Yes"
then I vomited!

DD -
"Is the baby ok"
"yes and it's a girl
"I knew it was a girl"
"Oh you found out before"
"Nope gut instinct - Ohhh, isn't she hairy?"

DS2 -
"It's a boy"
I turn to DH - "shit, we have no boys names sorted what do we call him"

Thought 1: She's not breathing (she was)
Thought 2: Why is no one resuscitating her (er...because she was breathing!)

Thought 3: OMG she looks like my sister

lolapoppins · 01/10/2009 14:46

"when can I have some sausages?"

I had 'morning' sickness so severe that I was still being sick as I was wheeled into theatre for my CS. I hadn't eaten in 8 months that didn't come straight back up again!

KnickersandVests · 01/10/2009 15:03

"Thank God she's not that ugly."

cheerfulvicky · 01/10/2009 15:26

My first thought when I caught sight of him flailing on the table across the room was "God, he's ugly". Then he cried and I thought 'this is the most amazing day of my life!' and started to well up

cheerfulvicky · 01/10/2009 15:26

Hahaha at x post with knickersandvests

ladyhelen2 · 01/10/2009 15:33

I see you've stuck around aurynne!

DS1: Oh shit. Its a baby. Can you clean him up please?

DS2: Thank god thats over. Is it a boy or a girl?

southlundon · 01/10/2009 15:42

"It's a baby!!"

I still think that although I had a great pregnancy, read all the books etc etc, you never really totally get that it's a little baby human being you are carrying until he/she comes out.

I said to dh last night that with our next one (whenever that is, God willing), I'll actually realise what I am growing in my belly!

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2009 15:45

Have to admit mine was relief the pain and pushing was over.
Then I remember thinking I'd forgotten how funny newborns look
Then remembered to check whether she was a boy or girl - then asked someone to confirm it for me

Clydesdale · 01/10/2009 16:01

1 - its a baby
2 - where the hell did that come from
3 - why does he look like he has raspberry ripple icecream on him?
4 - really fancy some ice cream now

izzybiz · 01/10/2009 16:07

With each one the first thought is "thank god it's over!"

Then; Ds1; He's mine, he's mine, he's mine!

Dd; To Dh, Look what we did!!

Ds2; Why isn't he crying? Whats wrong with him

All was fine, he needed a good rub and started screaming then i said, he looks funny! (He was huge and completely different from my first two!!)

Sweetney · 01/10/2009 16:35

Its a boy!! and it works! (as he did a big wee on me)

I said it works because he was diagnosed with kidney problems during a scan and there was concern he would need surgery to correct it!

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 01/10/2009 17:07

Oh this thread has alternately had me laughing and crying, because I'm pregnant and rubbish!

My first words/thoughts on seeing ds were: "oh yeah, lovely. I'll have a look in a bit." - to be fair I was in shock! after 10 min I was overjoyed and making daft comment that he had eyes and things.

ohmeohmy · 01/10/2009 17:59

DS1
Is he alright? (we'd been told he wouldn't be)
then 'he knows his dad' as he turned towards Dh's voice.

DD 'I'm so tired' then 'is she a girl?

IwoulddoDrWho · 01/10/2009 18:09

If I didn't know where she came from, I wouldn't believe she was mine.

Bumblingbovine · 01/10/2009 19:07

They put him on my belly and I though "He doesn't look right" (He looked sort of flat and lifeless and was blue). Immediately after that I heard 'Get the Paediatrician NOW" as a nurse grabbed him and took him over to a table to 'work on him"

Ds did eventually breathe but it was the longest 2 mins of my life. I can still remember that bit very vividly, whereas the rest of the birth experience has sort of faded as a lot of memories do. Not the 2 mins after the birth though or how he looked when they gave him back breathing and looking pink!

rubytwokids · 01/10/2009 22:28

I can't remember my first thoughts on dd's arrival, although they were probably, 'Thank God - finally, a real baby!' but my first words were, 'Hello.'

Labour with ds was pretty fast and although I can't remember the labour, I can clearly remember my first thoughts, which were all pretty bonkers:

'Hey? That felt like I just had a baby...' (My eyes were closed at the time - easy mistake to make. 'Oh - I did have a baby! [genuine surprise] Ooh - it's got a willy! Wow - I had a black baby!' (I didn't and both dh and I are almost anaemically white.)

Later I remember thinking, 'I am sooo clever!'

Alicious · 01/10/2009 23:13

My first thought was "Oh my God he looks like Mick Jagger!" (He had swollen lips) I never dared tell DH...
I think my first words were, "he's so small...and beautiful" followed by an apology to the midwife for using bad language and for pulling out the oxygen tube things from my nose-next time i'll try to do it better!

Spottyotter · 01/10/2009 23:57

Remember saying that he was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
Remember for some reason asking my mum to count his fingers and toes, why I couldn't do it I cannot remember.
Remember being glad he didn't have lots of black sticky-up hair like stig of the dump.
But most of all remember how beautiful he was.

Dominique07 · 02/10/2009 00:02

Oh hello - its you - the baby from inside me!
(because when you're pregnant you don't know how baby will look, they're with you for 9 months but you can't see their face, but when they're born you feel like you always knew them)

Cadelaide · 02/10/2009 00:03

Oh, he's pink and breathing and it really doesn't matter one bit whether or not he has Down Syndrome 'cos I lovehimlovehimlovehim...

(he doesn't, btw).

Cadelaide · 02/10/2009 00:04

....but tests showed a high risk, hope that makes sense.
