OhShutUpThomas · 21/02/2016 21:07

And any other Harry Potter mysteries!

Can anyone answer mine?
Is Voldemort a virgin?
What happened to Rodolphus Lestrange?
Why do some spells take weeks and hours of homework to learn, yet Harry can imperious people by just saying it?

Anyone else? I've got more, can't think just now. Just finished re-reading!

But Percy was caught snogging Penelope Clearwater in an empty classroom, there's all sorts of places students could have got busy!

Bet the Room Of Requirement could conjure up a pretty good lovenest. Or there's that bathroom from GoF!

VikingLady · 21/02/2016 22:19

Two things really irritated the hell out of me when I first read the books.

1 No school would separate the kids into houses according to personality type. You'd mix them. Especially after Voldemort's first rise to power!

2 Golden dinner plates? Seriously? Expensive, too soft so easily damaged by normal cutlery, a fantastic heat conductor so good would go cold quickly - ridiculous!

timeKeepingOnMars · 21/02/2016 22:19

I'm sure when Harry and Ron tried to get into Hermione's dorm once and the stairs turned into a slide so they slid back down. So no dorm hopping

Yes but I seemed to remember she could get into their dorm - as founders thought girls more trustworthy or something.

Maybe the founders needed some sex ed - it was some time ago school was founded - like you don't just have sex or get pg in the man's bed.

OhShutUpThomas · 21/02/2016 22:25

I love how the crockery is what really bothered you Viking Grin

My biggest bugbear is Dumbledore's idiotic masterplan - make sure the only person with vital information is the one Harry is most likely to kill on sight. He mightn't succeed, of course, but boy would he mean to.

There would probably be pure-blood prostitutes - you can't magic up food, or money. Ironically, Muggle-borns would be much less likely to starve, as they'd have access to the welfare state.

Devora · 21/02/2016 22:26

Most of you have probably seen this gem, but couldn't resist the opportunity to give it another outing: www.buzzfeed.com/danieldalton/boss-witch#.jdrZEqle0

scandichick · 21/02/2016 22:27

Also, I firmly believe Harry was an accident - born to fighters in the middle of a war, only a few years out of school? Substandard sex ed at Hogwarts was clearly to blame.

Akire · 21/02/2016 22:28

There more than 40 kids per year though? That would only be 10 a house. im sure alot of kids are home schooled or you would never see them for 7 y half of them never go home.

Ughnotagain · 21/02/2016 22:33

Celti girls can get up to the boys' rooms though, just not the other way round. So Hogwarts protects its girls against potential assaults by horrible boys but I'm sure some dorm creeping probably goes down!

Condorwoman · 21/02/2016 22:36

Ol' Voldy is definitely a virgin. An orgasm would mean a moment of vulnerability that I don't believe he's capable of. Unless it was all dry shagging. resists making a trouser snake joke

Snape on the other hand, most definitely had sex. Lots of it. He'll have been trying to find something to blot out the pain of losing his one true love so it's either lots of meaningless sex, or brewing himself up a 'special' potion now and again. Given that he's the sexiest man in Hogwarts, I'm going with the former.

I have read the fanfic thought about this.

StarkyTheDirewolf · 21/02/2016 22:37

In fairness, the films make the great hall look a lot bigger than it is. I've visited it in real life and it's a lot smaller than I expected. As is the Hogwarts common room. It was my birthday, so I got to magic open the doors to the great hall I was 28 Grin

rightguard · 21/02/2016 22:41

What I don't get is when harry and ron use polyjuice potion, their voices stay the same. But when barty crouch uses it to turn into moody in GoF, his voice changes too. He even speaks to his (bartys) father and he doesn't realise.

rightguard · 21/02/2016 22:47

Good plan starky. I took the dcs there but am going with work twice over next few months (I love my job!!) So a spot of lying about my birthday may be in order...!

Trills · 21/02/2016 22:47

No fucking way.

Did you SEE Chamber of Secrets?

Teenage Tom Riddle absolutely shagged some 5th year girls before he did his NEWTs.

rightguard · 21/02/2016 22:48

I watched CoS lasdt night. I didn't notice that.

Fyaral · 21/02/2016 22:50

Wrt the unforgivable killing curse: I imagine there are lots of spells to kill people in various awful ways. All probably illegal. Avada Kedavra is unforgivable because it divorces the killing from harm to the body and is so easy. It is therefore much more dangerous because it can be done by anyone even with a weak stomach. I would also imagine the feeling of absolute power is addictive.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 21/02/2016 22:50

I agree with Trills. I reckon Tom Riddle found his way into more than one chamber of secrets during his time at Hogwarts.

JK Rowling said there's about 1000 students at Hogwarts, obviously that doesn't work with the whole "40 students per year" thing so she said there was some creative snipping and cutting going on but also, the birth count for that year and the years around it were particularly low because of the war.

Fyaral · 21/02/2016 22:52

I also reckon Tom Riddle had sex for various purposes. To show power over others and also as a manipulator to get what he wants.

Snape probably died a virgin as he could not bear to touch anyone who was not Lily.

bruffin · 21/02/2016 22:53

I went in January we were there for 6 hoursShock
My niece is a huge HP fan, i bought her the first 3 books , got to work there for 2 months. The interview was a quiz on HP and, they had regular circle time discussing Hp.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 21/02/2016 23:00

But who would Snape be having sex with, condorwoman? He spends most of his time at Hogwarts; let's ignore the fanfic and rule out the students Envy; none of the professors seem likely either..?

Trills · 21/02/2016 23:00

Devora THANK YOU - I have read that before but love it.

Anyone with a bit of spare time should read all of these #Wood4Wood

Is Voldemort a virgin?
MrsArthurShappey · 21/02/2016 23:01

What I want to know is, why aren't all the Hogwarts students fat? Because the only sport they play is one where they sit down, and they have endless supplies of lush stodgy food (as bemoaned by Fleur).

SmallBee · 21/02/2016 23:03

Love this thread.

With regards to unforgivables I imagine you could probably kill someone with any number of other spells, such a misplaced engorgio or a badly aimed reducto, or say 'accio spine'?. In the same way that household objects are dangerous if used wrong.
(also stuff like sceptumsempurua - not cool Snape)
But AK is the only one that stone cold kills with no other applications so maybe that's why it is bad?

I really want to know what the unspeakables get up to. How do they get recruited?
