Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

What is the smell like? X

Smartiepants79 · 06/09/2025 19:14

You’re going to have to try and describe it.
I’ve lived with and work with several menopausal women. I can’t say I’ve noticed that any of them ‘smell’ funny.

The body starts to breakdown as you age and releases a fusty kind of smell. It’s a compound in the skin called 2-nonenal. Washing with persimmon soap can help with this.

Thank You!
I must admit to being initially somewhat slightly offended, as although I feel ancient, I don’t think 48 is that old 😂
But a quick search online suggests Persimmon Soap is good, one lady on Reddit says she noticed a smell at age 40 😂
Thank You ☺️ saves me an embarrassing doctors visit 👍
I love MN 😀😀

Omg. I thought I was imagining it.

I am using dettol bar soap as a i noticed it a few weeks ago and it’s literally only when I’m having a wee.

Im 45!

NewDogOwner · 06/09/2025 20:48

My sister had a crazy bad smell fthat no medicated deodorant would touch or a few months but it did go away. This too shall pass. In the meantime, get Mitchum deodorant, frequent showers and clothes changes if needed.

dudsville · 06/09/2025 20:50

Oh! I thought I was smelling better not worse!

BeyondMyWits · 06/09/2025 20:55

Mildly rotting onions is how I describe how I smelled for a couple of years. It does go away.

DeeKitch · 06/09/2025 20:58

Is it armpits or urine?

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 06/09/2025 21:00

So glad we’re talking about it!
It’s true, and generally you’re accused of ageism and misogyny if you mention it!

It reminds me of the asparagus wee smell! It’s just, kind of wrong/stale.

DeeKitch · 06/09/2025 21:02

Marmite pee?

onion armpits?

DatingDinosaur · 06/09/2025 21:03

Have you got a kidney stone @BruceLeTerror ? That can alter the smell of your wee (and your body's odour) and is more common as we age. Achy back? Cold in your kidneys? Needing to wee more often but maybe not as much urine as expected? Slower flow when you go?

When my cat had kidney issues she had a funny smell and I recognised the same smell when I had a kidney stone/sludge (years later after she'd died).

TheproblemitsME · 06/09/2025 21:05

You need probiotics and peppermint water/capsules. I found it was linked to digestion / gut / vaginal microbiome. Improving these also helped me with perimenopause symptoms as I think my body was functioning better and more balanced.

onion armpits?

I’m so glad some one else said onion arm pits ! It’s awful , I shower with bar soap and apply deodorant but wake in the morning thinking I fell asleep in a kebab ( which unfortunately I didn’t !)

Walkacrossthesand · 06/09/2025 21:09

I’m in my 60s, 15 years post menopause, and I smell different - I notice it around my neck, especially on nightwear. Don’t like it! My initial fear was that it was the ‘Parkinson’s smell’ that can apparently predate symptoms, but everything’s still moving OK. Maybe I’ll try persimmon soap - though it was evilly expensive last time I looked

LovelySunnyDayToday · 06/09/2025 21:10

Ok is it pits or pee people???

DeeKitch · 06/09/2025 21:10

I don’t know which you mean but if I drink too much Pepsi max I feel as my pee smells of marmite

Since starting HRT it seems I have one onion armpit!

CuddlesKovinsky · 06/09/2025 21:14

Try antibacterial bar soap for the onion pits! Dettol is about £1 a bar, has a light, citrussy smell.

SquirrelFan · 06/09/2025 21:14

Pretty sure it's pee. I noticed it in my 40s--thought 'why do I recognise that smell?' and I realised it was how the loo smelled after my mum used it. I'd describe it as kind of a 'round' full smell...

LovelySunnyDayToday · 06/09/2025 21:15

I think DH smells funny! It’s coming from everywhere. He’s 44. Anyone else’s?

BruceLeTerror · 06/09/2025 21:15

Not pits 😳

Another who has the onion armpits. Having never had smelly underarms before, I am horrified at the onion smell! How long does this last??

GoingOutOutAgain · 06/09/2025 21:17

Oh I have noticed this!

DeeKitch · 06/09/2025 21:18

So is it, fishy/asparagus/teabag smell?

BCBird · 06/09/2025 21:18

DeeKitch · 06/09/2025 21:02

Marmite pee?

onion armpits?

How true. I usually find one pit is OK but the other one could strip paint 🙄
