Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

That made me laugh.
The human body starts to "break down" and release smells after death, not with aging, what a completely inaccurate choice of words. I might be sweating differently but I am most definitely not decomposing yet 😂

If you google 2-noneal you will see what Mr Mucker means. Don't think it is decomposition though 😁

crazycatladie · 06/09/2025 22:20

Thought it was just me. If my husband goes in the loo after me he says, I can smell your odour’ I’m 48 and had ‘my odour’ for about a year 🫢

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I used to think exactly the same when my mum was in the loo, and now it’s happened to me. weird isn’t it?

Renamed · 06/09/2025 22:24

Oh! I don’t have any useful tips but the one onion armpit- yes I did have that! It’s gone now but I totally recognise perfumes smelling different. I used to occasionally use a deodorant/ body spray with a light citrus scent. Last time I used it, I rushed into the office, got in the lift, greeted colleague, thought My GOD, how can he wear that aftershave, it’s like Parma violets dissolved in toilet duck. Left lift and went to my desk… yes… it was me…

I was pretty agog before your post 😂

Now paranoid I have ‘a top note of old lady bum/genitals’ and I don’t think I’m going to sleep any time soon 😳

Grannies. Not granny's.

I wouldn't normally be so pedantic but if you are going to be wildly ageist, at least try to avoid the grocer's apostrophe.

Yes, definitely this, except for me it was my nana, I didn't notice it in my mum. I think of it as a biscuity smell but it isn't really, as you say hard to describe.
I'm glad you posted as my nana had several health issues and I was thinking the similarity might be due to me developing them, but hopefully it's just an age thing. She was in her 60s when I knew her.and I am in my 50s.

Im 38 and for the past year my pee smells, almost a kind of sweet, musty smell. I had all kinds of tests for kidney and gallstones and apparently nothing. My kids and husband comment on it, not that I mind much. I'd just love to know what it is. Am I perimenopausal?

Katemax82 · 06/09/2025 22:41

DatingDinosaur · 06/09/2025 21:03

Have you got a kidney stone @BruceLeTerror ? That can alter the smell of your wee (and your body's odour) and is more common as we age. Achy back? Cold in your kidneys? Needing to wee more often but maybe not as much urine as expected? Slower flow when you go?

When my cat had kidney issues she had a funny smell and I recognised the same smell when I had a kidney stone/sludge (years later after she'd died).

My mum used to make the bathroom smell gross when she was in her 40s. 20nyears later she was rushed to hospital with fucking huge kidney stones and had to be operated on

I'm just 30 and noticed this in the last couple months and get hot flushes in the mornings but I hope I'm not peri!

itsgettingweird · 06/09/2025 20:45

Omg. I thought I was imagining it.

I am using dettol bar soap as a i noticed it a few weeks ago and it’s literally only when I’m having a wee.

Im 45!

Having a wee is when I smell different too!

Ginburee · 06/09/2025 22:41

Interesting, my teen says my wee smells too.

Wackadaywideawake · 06/09/2025 22:42

Apparently most people have sweaty onion, cumin, or goats cheese pits.

Tonight I am onions.

😳

My fanny always tells me when I’ve had fish and chips, and a heavy morning of coffee can make my pee smell of Nescafé.

What a delicious smorgasbord of stinky scents. Can’t wait for the menopause mustiness.

Theadventuresofdiscomouse · 06/09/2025 22:44

I got some persimmon soap on Amazon - think it was about £8 for two bars and it has lasted ages! Made a real difference but made my anus itch so I don’t use it for my bum any more!! Sorry if that’s TMI but don’t want anyone else to suffer.

Nervousb2b · 06/09/2025 22:47

Omg no!

I know exactly the smell you're describing - I am yet to develop the smell, I didn't think I would! I thought it was just my mum's quirky toilet smell.

Now I'm not so sure... :-(

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 06/09/2025 22:51

Mushrooms are good to help with the musty smell apparently, and persimmon soap.

There is an article i read somewhere about the "old person" smell that is quite common. I'll try to find it...

Zippidydoodah · 06/09/2025 22:55

Is it just me who never noticed my mum’s bathroom smell? 😳

I’ve noticed that my wee smells of gravy. Could that be what you’re talking about? Is it cos I am old?

Where do you put the mushrooms? 🤣

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 06/09/2025 22:56

Not sure if this is the article I read but it is a similar one that explains it well.

Crispynoodle · 06/09/2025 22:57

Me too!!! Rather interestingly I had a gastritis attack recently and bought some (hugely expensive £35 a months worth 😱) probiotics and I haven’t noticed the old lady smell (am off to buy persimmon soap just in case)

Fleetheart · 06/09/2025 22:58

it’s not an old person smell; it’s a very specific lady of a certain age smell and only in the loo
