Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

BruceLeTerror · 06/09/2025 19:06

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

Have you found a way to launder clothes, that removes the persistent odour?

I just wash my clothes the normal way and that's good enough to make them smell clean and fresh. Bung a bit of laundry disinfectant in for extra freshness.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/09/2025 19:45

I still don’t know if I’ve smelt the smell everyone is talking about. I asked DP if I smelt and he said no. I’m definitely thinking of buying some body wash just incase though.

It's made me paranoid too! I use Dove soap (not liquid) and I think its pretty good. Mitchum deodorant.

What cranberry capsules does anyone recommend?

Retired people here. The other day I took a (just washed and aired) garment out of the wardrobe and asked a young teen to sniff it, saying I wouldn't be offended. She said it didn't smell fresh but couldn't identify it. I said, is it like when you walk into a charity shop, she said, yes.

I suspect nonenal or similar odour.

I’m not UK resident so I got something at my local chemist - cranberry supplements with 12,5g cranberry per tablet. You can find them in the UTI prevention section of most chemists. I’m sure other posters will have some good UK brand recommendations.

I remember the toilet smell from childhood, how you could instantly know that a middle aged lady had been there recently. ‘Full’ is exactly the smell. As a child I used to imagine it was like great apes signaling to one another in the jungle.
I don’t have it all the time yet, but I’m definitely willing to jump on the persimmon soap bandwagon.

And a huge thank you for the cranberry capsules tip! It’s made a big difference - I can eat fish again, but I also seem to smell fabulous generally, no more musty menopausal smell!

Im going to copy this, this will be an absolute revelation if this works for me.

Years Ive had to fend off (online only as wouldnt talk about it in real life) suggestions I have an infection, no I just smell of fish when I eat fish, Particularly white fish and crustaceans, slightly less so with salmon and tuna although all pretty bad anyway.

Im going to order some.

Itsybitsytitsy · 21/09/2025 20:57

Re cranberry capsules, the ones I have are via Amazon Prowise triple strength with Vit C. I wonder if cranberry juice would work too?

dynamiccactus · 22/09/2025 19:16

This is an interesting thread. My skin used to smell of the sun (it was a not unpleasant smell that I had after being in the sun, so a summery smell). I think it's a younger woman's smell because I don't anymore. I don't really notice a fusty smell but the young sunshine smell has gone!

It’s people 70+, never smelled anyone younger with it

Even though loads of younger women on here are telling you otherwise?

The original post was about a specific odour you can smell when you go to the loo. The thread has drifted on to onion armpits and musty bodies but that's a different matter.

I find this really funny in an odd oh I was kind of right fort of way. When my other half was loosing weight. A couple of stone. I noticed he smelt completely different for a while. I wonder if it was toxic sort of things leaving the body or a change in chemicals in his body ect.

Ketones can smell pretty strongly.

WellMaybeYouShouldntBeLivingHeeeeeeee · 24/09/2025 22:45

I don’t think I smell bad, but I kind of want cranberry capsules now anyway to make me smell extra good

Shineonyoucrazy · 25/09/2025 15:03

I know what you mean. I associate it with older women. It’s not offensive, fishy, even unpleasant etc. But the poster who said a bit asparagussy and the poster who said “round, full” have nailed it. It’s noticeable. It’s nothing to do with person hygiene.

justasking111 · 25/09/2025 15:27

Isn't it the Japanese who have a long shower exfoliating, then have a soak in the bath.

Calliopespa · 25/09/2025 15:38

Foolsgold74 · 23/09/2025 09:14

Ketones can smell pretty strongly.

I knew someone who did keto long term and his breath could only be described as faecal-breath.

I felt too bad to tell him, but it was overpowering.

ItstheHRTpat · 25/09/2025 15:43

I used to work with a woman who smelt like sweetcorn when she was of menopause age. It wasn't a disgusting smell, but it was a bit off putting.

CalzoneOnLegs · 26/09/2025 01:33

Puffed Wheat Pee !

I think women younger than that age can have smells at any age.

So the original post was about smelly urine.
Did the thread ever get to any strategies or solution to that particular problem.
I’ve had this issue since my 20s (now in my 60s). My mother had it too. I went to the loo in a friends house earlier today and it can only be described as very pungent
Oh the shame!
Any ideas - apart from just going in the garden instead.
