Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

Not sure if this is the article I read but it is a similar one that explains it well.

I love mushrooms hurrah! 🍄

Is it just me who never noticed my mum’s bathroom smell? 😳

I’ve noticed that my wee smells of gravy. Could that be what you’re talking about? Is it cos I am old?

I've noticed this sometimes too with my wee. It's often slightly musty and asparagus like too. Even when I haven't eaten any...

It's definitely a perimenopause thing i reckon. And an older person thing.

God, life's bloody depressing sometimes lol 😆

friendlyflicka · 06/09/2025 23:00

I know exactly what you mean. I don't think it is a problem that you need to solve. I just find it funny as a part of life. I remember being a 7 year old child and noticing it. But it wasn't unpleasant just a part of life, like old people having to get their glasses

WellMaybeYouShouldntBeLivingHeeeeeeee · 06/09/2025 23:03

A fresh fear has been unlocked with this thread. I don’t recognise anyone’s descriptions of the smell, so I don’t know if I will notice if have it 🥺

Me too!!! Rather interestingly I had a gastritis attack recently and bought some (hugely expensive £35 a months worth 😱) probiotics and I haven’t noticed the old lady smell (am off to buy persimmon soap just in case)

Oooh do you mind sharing the brand of probiotics? I’m really suffering from gastritis at the moment!

I got some persimmon soap on Amazon - think it was about £8 for two bars and it has lasted ages! Made a real difference but made my anus itch so I don’t use it for my bum any more!! Sorry if that’s TMI but don’t want anyone else to suffer.

Took one for the team there, @Theadventuresofdiscomouse ... 🐭

I need to know what the actual smell is 👀

ImagineImagine · 06/09/2025 23:09

I have this too. It’s not the nicest smell, but not rancid either, just odd. It’s sort of sweet/floral/musty. I too wash every day and have clean undies and clothes. I’ll try some of the suggestions to get rid.

itsgettingweird · 06/09/2025 23:10

I have one armpit that starts to
smell - not BO but I reckon it’s what you’re all calling onion ampit!!!!

Can’t describe the loo one. I get it and have noticed it the past few weeks. Gone off dairy might be the closest we’ve come in this thread.

Also noticed my hair gets greasier much quicker- I use to be able to wash it twice a week!

florizel13 · 06/09/2025 23:12

I think these are two different smells ...I noticed I smelled a bit different when I went through menopause, but it wasn't the same smell that my elderly dad had, bless him, which was the "old person's smell" that is related to the 2-nonenal compound in the skin. I think the menopause smell is hormonal

Bio-kult always used to be the best for variety of content and strength. Consultants at our local Children’s hospital used to use it for themselves and patients so that was good enough for me 😁

Exactly this! Not foul - just … distinctive…
TF it’s not just me 😂
Hey ho, getting old is fun 🙄🙄

I remember that smell in the bathroom after my mother used it as well, think she was in her mid 40s around that time. She didn’t actually smell in her person though

Janeysunshibe · 06/09/2025 23:22

The girls on The Luanna podcast call it the hoff boff 🤣

XiCi · 06/09/2025 23:29

The persimmon soap works. Completely eradicates the smell.

LancashireButterPie · 06/09/2025 23:30

CuddlesKovinsky · 06/09/2025 21:42

Yes, I had a lumpectomy on one side and that armpit was horrendously oniony for a couple of months post-surgery; then that calmed down a bit, and the other seemed to 'catch up' a few years later... antibac soap helped, but I'd love to find some persimmon too.

And I've worn Guerlain perfume all my life, but it just goes powdery on me now... I know it's known for that powdery, sweet 'Guerlainade', and I'd get a hint of that in the drydown after several hours; but it's just overpoweringly cloying on me straight away now... 😢

Apparently our skin gets more alkaline and greasy with age, so I'm going for more citrussy perfume to counteract that.

Guerlain do a gorgeous orange scent.

Fionasapples · 06/09/2025 23:31

I haven't noticed that smell on me and I don't remember it on my mum, but something I have noticed is that sometimes I think my hair smells like potatoes. I think it's if I've sweated a bit round my neck under my hair. I've noticed that for a few years since I was about 50.

I used to work with a lovely woman who used to smell awful, like cheese and onion pasties. I thought she didn't wash but it seemed out of character and I think she probably couldn't help it. She was about 50 when I first knew her.

Keenovay · 06/09/2025 23:32

This thread is giving me a Proustian rush... Don't think I have ever seen this discussed before.

I recognise this smell from my mum and from going into public loos after women of a certain age. I don't find it pleasant. I think a PP was spot on describing it as a "full" smell - I would describe it as "thick". I associate it with having cystitis or bladder infections myself, but don't know if that's the complete story. Hormones?

DiscoNights · 06/09/2025 23:33

I’ve never noticed the wee smell on myself and I never noticed it on my mum. I definitely have one onion armpit though!

Not pits 😳

I’m with you on this.im 49 and have been noticing this for a while every time I use the loo.i thought something with my water works maybe, went to dr took a sample in all fine.worrying if anyone else goes in after me after I have a wee, bloody ridiculous.thank you for this thread xx

MargaretThursday · 06/09/2025 23:34

Totally know what you mean.

I was thinking about this the other day. When I was probably about 5 or 6 I tried to explain to dm that I could smell if her or df had been in the bathroom (and who it was) but I couldn't for my siblings and I wanted to know if there was a reason.
She got upset that I was accusing her of smelling (which I wasn't) and told me off about saying personal things.
It wasn't she smelt at all (or df) but that there was a distinctive smell in the bathroom when either of them had gone.

If you take vitamin B supplements it can make your pee smell strong...
