Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

BruceLeTerror · 06/09/2025 19:06

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

I am of age and don't notice this about myself. I remember my mum's pee smelling strong when I was a kid but she would only have been in her late 20's early 30's at the time. Just been for a wee and didn't smell anything, I do smell the asparagus pee smell when I eat asparagus. I use Wild deo and my pits don't really smell either. I just wash with dove soap. I do eat a lot of mushrooms though.

I’m so glad some one else said onion arm pits ! It’s awful , I shower with bar soap and apply deodorant but wake in the morning thinking I fell asleep in a kebab ( which unfortunately I didn’t !)

I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but glycolic acid is amazing for this.

Kleya25 · 07/09/2025 00:55

Glad it's not just me...I now use Persimmon soap, with the goats milk base the best for me personally. I keep an antiperspirant on my desk drawer or my work bag, and have taken to carrying one of those little deodorant toilet sprays around with me and spraying the bowl before daring to indulge in natural bodily functions. We have a very judgemental cleaner at work and I am now super paranoid after some of her recent comments. I really miss being able to work from home...

The things you learn on Mumsnet!
I'm 65 and haven't noticed anything like this 🤔

You need probiotics and peppermint water/capsules. I found it was linked to digestion / gut / vaginal microbiome. Improving these also helped me with perimenopause symptoms as I think my body was functioning better and more balanced.

@TheproblemitsME which probiotics did u use?

justasking111 · 07/09/2025 00:59

Well just done my ablutions for bed. Couldn't smell weird pee. Could smell sweaty gap between breasts. Pits smell fine. I'll recheck in the morning.

I do notice a funny smell in the morning in the bedroom sometimes because we shut the door, even if the small window is open but that's improved since I bought a new duvet so I guess we've impregnated it. Also I've pulled out my winter dressing gown which smelt fusty. Perhaps a hotter wash is required before I put it away in the wardrobe.

This house is so well insulated compared to our old place which doesn't help.

menomenomeno · 07/09/2025 01:04

I asked the gp and had my urine tested but it came back fine, I have had swabs etc all fine but I definitely smell, I hate it. I had my gallbladder removed and my pee is dark in the morning still but it started before that. I also have atrophy so it could be related to that but I think it’s my pee. I also smell sweaty down there and never did before.
Im feel like a fat, smelly bearded woman it’s awful

My wee smells normal but I went through a few years of my pits smelling of weed.

But do we infer from your username that you have something else to share on the topic?

You'll have to share that comment now as you've dangled it too maddeningly to not finish the tale!

I think Florizel13 is right. I remember my grandmother having it after the menopause and now it's my turn!

Then there's the other smell that comes with old age.

what other smell?

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 06/09/2025 23:40

I think I'll just kill myself now

Yep. There's a point at which the horizon of the future begins to feel quite daunting.

GoldDuster · 07/09/2025 00:00

Hard to, but if you go into a public loo behind a lady of a certain age, you might find it there. My grandma had it, my mum didn't and I've recently started catching a drift of it from myself. Not every day, probably at certain times of the month, which make sesne as it's hormonal. It's not BO as such, it's something to do with your pee.

Joy.

Is your name Joy? 😉 Or is it the irony of how joyless it is for us all being part of the smelly menopausal womens' club?! 😂😕😳

Calliopespa · 07/09/2025 01:22

MrMucker · 06/09/2025 21:32

That made me laugh.
The human body starts to "break down" and release smells after death, not with aging, what a completely inaccurate choice of words. I might be sweating differently but I am most definitely not decomposing yet 😂

I'm sort of laughing at this but also sort of crying from disappointment about how depressing it all sounds.

I'm going to have to stop being so judgmental of dogs now I know what's round the corner for me.

Oh God, dont encourage me too much! I've literally had the worst decade of health and having this extra thing to worry about is not a good thing and enough to push me over the edge a bit...😅😑

I quite agree.

Pigriver · 07/09/2025 01:35

As a 43 year old I am feeling very seen. I started to notice it a few months ago.

Dare I say it....? Is it literally the smell of vaginal atrophy 😳
We hit menopause and our fannies start to die.

I also get the periodic stinky BO that is like the Borg and adapts to whatever antiperspirant has worked for months. Citrus soaps seem to make it worse so I'm sceptical about the persimmon.

Calliopespa · 07/09/2025 01:39

I sort of do know the smell I think. It was the post above about public toilets that given me a flashback to a very well-dressed middle-aged lady emerging from a theatre loo with a faintly guilty look and a sort of fuggy waft. I vaguely assumed she hadn't really washed that area for a while, but from this thread I now realise the poor lady had, on the contrary, probably been at it with the persimmon soap to no avail - even to the point of making herself itchy like @Theadventuresofdiscomouse .

It wasn't really awful, more just kind of warm and overly-intimate?

bumblenbean · 07/09/2025 01:39

Oh God I’ve noticed my pee smells stronger lately, it’s been really bugging me! It’s not a rank smell but not exactly pleasant either. It’s a smell i associate with being dehydrated - like an oddly strong odour where you’d expect the pee to be dark and cloudy (it isn’t).

i assumed it was dehydration but now I’m fearful I’m consigned to inexplicably stinky-pee for life!

Poodlelove · 07/09/2025 02:18

Yes me too.
My husband can't smell it.
My Mum used to say it's normal as my sister felt she had a smell and now I have it.
I change brands of deodorant regularly, it's not my arm pits that shell though.
I am my fifties, it's annoying me.

TheOneandOnlyPrincessFiona84 · 07/09/2025 03:04

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 07/09/2025 00:23

It's definitely between my breasts.
And yes, I can smell it in the bathroom after either of us has been in it.

Is this like a sour milk smell?
I've noticed a faint smell on occasion and occasionally the old lady pee smell.

If only we also started looking like seven of nine as well it wouldn't be so bad.

Sunbeam01 · 07/09/2025 03:35

I'm in my late 30's and haven't experienced this smell but wanted to recommend Glycolic Acid for armpits (advised by my dermatologist).

It's incredible - a small amount stops any smell without stopping sweat. It lasts all day and it has also lightened my underarms (unexpected benefit).

Side note - I've also used it on my arms for keratosis pilaris and it's completely cleared after only 2 weeks.

I use The Ordinary.

I think DH smells funny! It’s coming from everywhere. He’s 44. Anyone else’s?

I was able to smell DH's cancer 18 months before he was diagnosed so it might be worth a check up. His breath, his skin, everything smelled different.

What we eat and our gut biome changes how we smell.

BrendaSmall · 07/09/2025 06:17

Just looked up persimmon soap on Amazon
🤣
They have it listed as “ old people smell “

SocksShmocks · 07/09/2025 06:21

Absolutely remember the toilet smell from older ladies in my childhood. It’s distinct from the other older people smell which I also recognise and have started to notice on my parents (late 70s). There is also a separate sickness / hospital smell which they have when they’re ill which I remember from my grandma’s care home.

I have sometimes noticed the menopausal lady toilet smell on myself. I am pleased to have this thread. Not pleased to have the smell.

And unfortunately I am not very good at describing smells so I can’t help for those who asked.

I CANNOT however smell asparagus wee. I read once that everyone’s wee does smell after asparagus but not everyone can smell it. Maybe it’s true of all the other smells mentioned on this thread too.
