Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

theClitterani have you checked they are not in your front door? As you said they have your front door key on them. I have to bring mine in as they have the alarm fob on them, but if not I suspect I would leave them in the lock sometime.

MrsBertBibby · 19/01/2020 10:50

Green tea is also diuretic so doesn't work as a stand in for water.

Mimosa1 · 19/01/2020 11:29

Hi everyone,

I am Mimosa and I'm a tea addict! I've found some nice tasting decaf black tea. Does anyone more knowledgeable on the science piece know if that counts towards fluid intake? I'm supposed to have 3L a day so I'm hoping so :)

If today's loss sticks for tomorrow, I'll be down 1.7kg which I'm v pleased with as i d been doing BC light.

I'm off to Cote for lunch which has a lot of Lc options, fortunately.

Hope you all have a nice rest of the weekend.

Harveywoo · 19/01/2020 12:04

Thanks @HouseTornado and @stuntnun for the top poo-related tips. Am doing pretty well with water intake already but will try for even more (I’m really heavy so should be 3.5 litres apparentlyBlush). Not a coffee drinker so going to try coconut oil in tea this morning! Sorry to hear you’re having bot issues too @NoOneCaresInRealLife !

Harveywoo · 19/01/2020 13:05

B: fried mushroom, egg, spinach and bacon
L: tuna mayo avocado and rocket in a Lo-dough wrap with an incinerated egg muffin (forgot I’d done them, they cooked for an hour Confused
D: going to try the fish cakes recipe from the spreadsheet using tinned pink salmon, with crispy kale
Son has just told me he a daddy have bought a lovely big gluten -free cake for my birthday tomorrow. Don’t know what to say or do about that Sad

SpeckledDot · 19/01/2020 14:06

I weigh in on Saturdays and I'm happy to say I've lost 1lb Smile

Todays meals:

B: scrambled eggs with cheese and bacon
L: an egg muffin and a cup of coffee
D: Not sure yet as I'm not the one cooking. I hope there's plenty of veg as I haven't had my intake for today!

StuntNun · 19/01/2020 14:13

Yes Mimosa decaf tea counts towards your water intake along with up to two mugs of caffeinated tea or coffee per day.

Harveywoo if it's important to your DS then I'd just have the tiniest slice you can - remember you don't have to eat it all once it's on your plate. You could stay extra low carb for the rest of the day to compensate if you're worried about the effect on your weight loss. It can be really hard to avoid obligation food.

Good day so far:

B - repeat of yesterday's mushroom, spinach, feta, egg and tomato.
L - leftover Bolognese and cheese
D - chicken breasts in creamy mustard sauce with green vegetables.

Lots of water today, three pints before breakfast 😇

Rayna37 · 19/01/2020 15:39

Did ok last night but it was a really nice restaurant I might not go back to for some time so didn't make myself comply 100% with the rules. Starter was "pollock boulettes" (fish balls) in a gorgeous spicy creamy sauce and main was a sort of deconstructed cassoulet, so lovely fatty duck and pork, but also beans. Probably some hidden sugar/flour in sauces. No bread, no dessert, no booze, did have an alcohol free beer though (plus loads of water) and then realised that was a bit too carby. On balance, should undo the damage by tomorrow morning fingers crossed.

Today: scrambled eggs
Lunch was picky bits: pate on celery and a portion of Brie
Dinner will be wood pigeon breasts with FLGV and butter

Hooray for my local Aldi who have started stocking the naice West Country butter in the black wrapper again.

Mimosa1 · 19/01/2020 17:31

Thanks @stuntnun - that's very good news! Now just need to cut down on the milk...

@rayna that meal sounds fab.

I did well at Cote (the chain) today - some delicious lamb chops and I virtuously didn't eat any of the children's chips. Hoping to get to 2kg off by tomorrow.

venusandmars · 19/01/2020 17:35

notwatchingtv I lost my glasses last April. My dh found them in October lurking in a shrub next to the bench by the kitchen door. I must have gone to sit there in the morning sunshine, taken off my glasses to relax, and they slipped into the bush. All during the summer they were covered by foliage and only reappeared in autumn. And after I'd spent several hundred ££ on a replacement pair!

venusandmars · 19/01/2020 17:44

harveywoo be delighted, cut a big slice for everyone else. Cut a small bit for yourself. Cover it with whipped cream, maybe a couple of berries. Eat the cream and berries. Quietly leave the tiny slice, or sneakily put it in the bin. With the remaining cake, take it to work for your colleagues, or to save it for when your imaginary friend comes over. Then gently re-educate your dh (not tomorrow)

MrsBertBibby · 19/01/2020 18:25

I had the yummiest lunch today : avocado and fried halloumi. Could expand with leaves and stuff, but really, the combination of smooth cool bland avocado and crispy salty halloumi was delightful.

MrsBertBibby · 19/01/2020 18:38

I feel your pain, harveywoo. This is the astonishing work of art that ended my first bootcamp. My oh commissioned it before I started low carbing, my birthday coincided with the end of bc, but I hadn't intended quite such a vigorous dismount from the carb-wagon!

Got a beautiful pork belly cooking, can’t wait! I’ll be having with broccoli, a few green beans, and garlicky courgettes. DP will have some potatoes too

whitershadeofpale · 19/01/2020 18:45

I’ve weighed in early today as Sunday is easier than Monday for me. I’ve lost another 3lbs! I started a week early so have lost 7lbs altogether this BC so far.

Rshard · 19/01/2020 19:02

That’s an amazing cake mrsbert!

Good to read how boot campers are successfully navigating meals out.

MonaChopsis · 19/01/2020 19:02

I have stayed on the wagon all weekend, including when making 6 pizzas from scratch for assorted family and friends. Used a teaspoon of the sauce (homemade so no added sugar) and put it on three Portobello mushrooms along with ham, pepper and cheese, and had some grilled artichoke and eggplant on the side. Delicious feeling of virtuousness, didn't even take a bite. Tonight have had butter-fried courgetti with cream cheese and smoked salmon stirred through, delicious.

I am finding though that I have to re-educate myself as to what 'full' means. I used to feel physically satiated, now I don't... But if I wait 20 mins after eating, I have zero desire to eat any more, whereas two weeks ago I would have been wondering what was for pudding!!

Harveywoo · 19/01/2020 19:45

Thanks @stuntnun, good plan. I don’t want to make them feel bad but have an underlying fear that once I start, I’ll fall off the wagon completely. Must stop catastrophising.
@MrsBertBibby that is an incredible cake! No way could it have been left uneaten, bet it was worth the fall from grace/ bootcamp Cake

PseudoBadger · 19/01/2020 19:47

@ venusandmars that’s a lovely kind plan, I like it muchly and will implement it tomorrow!

SayrraT · 19/01/2020 19:49

Amazing cake!

I had an incredible dinner, baked camembert with celery, cucumber and fried garlicky beef strips to dip into it.

absopugginglutely · 19/01/2020 20:07

Ooh these meal ideas look amazing!
Today:
B: cream coffee
L: corned beef and leerdammer
D: FLGV and low carb beef Bolognese.
S: 2x meatsters
3 L water
Another cream coffee

venusandmars · 19/01/2020 20:15

@rayna37 thanks for the 'organuary' ideas. Tonight we had chicken livers, cooked in butter with cream and pancetta, later in the week we'll have Rognons Turbigo which is essentially lamb kidney and sausages in a sort of casserole with shallots, a wee bit of tomato, and some stock. I was also eyeing up the oxtail, but I don't have a go-to recipe. What do you recommend?
