Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

Lost 6lbs so far this week! So pleased! Just forcing myself to eat a bit of yogurt before heading out to the LCHF Mecca that is M&S. I'm back to my lowest weight that I go to last year so I'm thrilled. It's so frustrating to have to relose weigh you've already lost once or many times

StuntNun · 18/01/2020 10:50

What do you marinade the pork belly in TheClitterati?

MsAwesomeDragon kale crisps are about a thousand times nicer than you would think. Buy the ready chopped kale, coat in olive oil and salt (or a blend of chilli oil and olive oil is lush) and bake at 180C for 20 minutes. They go crispy and slightly black around the edges. They're hot, crispy, salty and moreish.

Get some electrolytes if you can MrShoho a pinch of salt and squeeze of lemon juice in water works well. For breakfast ideas can you think outside the box? My DS4 likes chicken legs for breakfast!

Funny isn’t is sayyra and mimosa?! I’ve only managed 1/2 litre so far but have had two black coffees. I’ll crack on with the rest of it now that I’m home and have access to a toilet.

Did a 12k walk with a friend while our dd’s were swimming so exercise is sorted for the day!

El2El · 18/01/2020 11:03

Can anyone help? I'm breast feeding and vegetarian - doing a low carb light type of bootcamp I guess. Drinking 2.5-3L of water each day.

My DD is one month old and this last week she has vomitted quite a few times - usually during or shortly after feeding, projectile and enough that we both need to change most of our clothes. I'll speak to the HV at the clinic Monday, but in the meantime, have any other BF Mum's found that LCHF has made their babies poorly?

It's happened x3 in the last 12 hours.

Notwatchingtvtoday · 18/01/2020 11:14

Another 1/2 lb off so that is 4 and a 1/2lbs since Monday. I have been absolutely following it to the letter, with the exception of 1 raspberry and a teaspoon of Linwood fax seeds on my Total Greek Yogurt in the morning, I can’t eat it stand alone and this is the breakfast I like and enjoy. This is the most I have ever lost in the first week and I have put it down to no cheats 😀 , I think that you really can’t cheat on boot camp as BIWI says this is not a forgiving WOE. You just can’t mix the high fat with any carbs and I think I am someone who has to be careful to keep my milk and cream very low.

Today
B Total Greek yogurt (160gms) 1 crumbled frozen raspberry, 1 teaspoon of Linwood, 1 tsp double cream ( I add the cream as can only get 5% fatTotal.
L scrambled eggs and avocado
S if I need I have olives, rollitos or cucumber or celery with cream cheese
D chilli made with mince beef, but no kidney beans, avocado, sour cream, sprinkle of cheese on a bed of mashed celaric and swede

FLWater , have waterlogged app and aim to do 3 litres plus 2 coffees

Would love another 1/2 pound off for Monday

mrshoho · 18/01/2020 11:29

Thanks Stuntnun I will add the salt and lemon to my water today. I think once I get through the first 2 weeks breakfast will be easier and I'll feel like meat or yoghurt.

EI2EI Sorry I cant help as was a long time since I BF but I do remember changes in my diet did cause vomiting at times and i had to eliminate certain foods for a while. Hopefully someone can advise on here.

m0therofdragons · 18/01/2020 11:38

I've missed breakfast as dh let me sleep in as I'm still recovering. Feeling more human so will get properly on it. I'm having bacon and eggs on lettuce for lunch and chicken and chorizo with green beans for dinner.

It's a bit too processed food heavy really so I'll adjust that for later in the week.

PseudoBadger · 18/01/2020 12:22

@MsAwesomeDragon what about these from M&S?

www.you.co.uk/marks-spencer-charcuterie-crisps/

PseudoBadger · 18/01/2020 12:22

I don’t like pork scratchings or crackling either

StuntNun · 18/01/2020 12:23

EI2EI no, eating low carb will not make your baby sick unless you're eating a food that she is allergic to? My DS4 is allergic to coconut and reacted if I ate it while breastfeeding.

Afternoon Ladies.
Congratulations @Teapotdespot and @Tentontessie!
How did you get on stuntnun with your fast? I usually do 18:6 5 days a week and it really helps me maintain. My carb intake has been way too high since my birthday in October so intervention was needed.
I’ve never attempted a longer fast, may try 20 hrs on a day when family life is not too hectic.

I’ve done some sneaky measuring and weighing and looks like I’ve dropped just over 3 lbs and 1 inch of my waist. Very pleased!

Food today
B: green tea ( so far 3 mugs today)
L: leftover veg chicken curry and some fried mushrooms with courgette, mixed with some pesto ( tiny amount)
D: can’t wait, it will be fish with lot of veg

El2El · 18/01/2020 12:51

@mrshoho @stuntnun thanks for your replies. I'll investigate with the HV.

waspfig · 18/01/2020 13:47

Checking in with today's menu:
B a leftover burger and a fried egg
S two babybels
L cucumber and pate, some cooked chicken and mayo
D scallop and prawn 'pasta' (trying out bare naked noodles as spaghetti) in a creamy lemon sauce with tender stem broccoli and asparagus

No alcohol, one tea with milk and 3L of water
Definitely harder with the water at the weekend when out and about more.

venusandmars · 18/01/2020 13:58

Early dog walk with (borrowed) dog, so no breakfast, just creamy coffee when I got back.

L - spinach soup made with ham stock, plus some cheese and ham rollitos
D - home made chicken and prawn laska (mine will have courgette noodles, dh will have proper noodles)

Tomorrow (since I'm planning for the weekend)
B - creamy scrambled egg
L - mushroom stuffed with spinach and blue cheese (probably st Agur cream)
D - chicken liver and pancetta with salad

There was an article in the paper today about losing weight (about 15kg) to reverse / minimise type 2 diabetes. It looked very similar to the fast 800 (not that I've done that) with 8 weeks of shakes and no real food. It just seemed so far away from this woe, and they said that lots of people struggled to return to normal food afterwards.

MsAwesomeDragon · 18/01/2020 13:59

Thanks @StuntNun and @PseudoBadger. I'll give both of those a try. The kale crisps sound nicer to me, but the m&s ones would be more convenient if I can just stock up and have them available in the house when I want them.

It's taking a lot to change my mindset to accept that I should be cooking with fat. I've used fry light to cook with ever since I started SW 20 years ago!!! I don't even really know how to cook with fat! I'm doing it, but it's a learning process about how much fat I need to cook each thing. My bacon did taste nicer cooked in butter this morning though, yum!

Mimosa1 · 18/01/2020 14:34

@venusandmars do you one of those borrow my doggy type apps? I've been thinking it might be a fun thing to do over the summer.

I've just had last night leftovers - salmon and cauliflower - into a salad with a few peppers for crunch and it was delicious.

Off to have more water...

StuntNun · 18/01/2020 14:46

Pseudo those charcuterie crisps are easy to make yourself. Just put 9 slices of chorizo or salami on a piece of kitchen roll on a plate in the microwave for one minute on high. You can eat them warm or put them in the fridge to cool down for a snack later. They are divine if you put a small piece of soft cheese such as Brie on them and put them back into the microwave for another ten seconds.

Mandelinka my fast lasted 38 hours in the end. Shock I was planning to have breakfast this morning but then my SIL offered to babysit so she took DS3 and DS4 while DH and I went out for a late breakfast... only it took ages to find anywhere with space so it was noon before we got anything to eat. I was hungry for the food but no more than usual. I had heard that you didn't feel hungry while fasting but it's really true. Later on in the Bootcamp we'll chat about the different forms of fasting and when and why people might want to try them. There's a professor, I can't remember his name, who believes that one long fast per year could prevent cancer so I think the therapeutic benefits are going to become more apparent as time goes on.

I hope you get some answers EI2EI. Three of my children have food allergies and the symptoms aren't really that obvious. DS2 was 10 before we realised he was dairy intolerant. On the other hand it could just be a bug or digestive immaturity. With babies a lot of these problems settle down around 12 weeks with the end of the fourth trimester.

Venusandmars that's Prof Roy Taylor of Newcastle University's diet plan. As a rule of thumb he found that losing 15kg reversed type 2 diabetes. In patients that didn't need to lose 15kg then losing 10% of their bodyweight reversed diabetes. The research was based on the observation that diabetes spontaneously reversed in people who had gastric bypass surgery. So the diet protocol is designed to mimic the calorie restriction after gastric bypass surgery, hence the 800 calorie shakes for 8 weeks. I've worked with Prof Taylor and he very much follows the mainstream dietary advice so he probably wouldn't be willing to countenance a high fat approach. In my professional opinion the Newcastle diet is most suitable for diabetes patients whose health is in crisis, for example facing amputation or being too overweight for safe surgery. If you don't need to lose 15kg in 8 weeks then an LCHF (low carb high fat) approach is preferable because it is a sustainable way of eating that you can continue for life. We're already building healthy food habits that will make this "diet" into an effortless way of eating. On the Newcastle plan you lose weight first and then have to try and develop healthy eating.

I think the fat aversion will get easier over time MrsAwesome as your body gets used to using fat as its main fat source it will become more appealing and palatable. I had a fry up for breakfast this morning and I put the butter that came with the toast on my fried egg and didn't eat the toast of course. I used to try to minimise my fat intake too but now I positively seek it out. When I buy pork chops or steak or bacon I look for the ones with the most fat on now!

@venusandmars

This time last year I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with a blood sugar of 88. Now I have lost 3 stone and it is 37. I either did strict bootcamp or loosely followed it. It really works. My metformin is halved and I can come off it with one more normal result.

HouseTornado · 18/01/2020 16:28

I did it!

Met friend for pub lunch and had a delicious, carb and booze free meal!

Thank you to everyone who offered menu advice. It really helped.

NoOneCaresInRealLife · 18/01/2020 17:01

Hi,
B. 2 boiled eggs with tbsp mayo and butter
L. Prawns with mayo, lettuce, avocado, cucumber
D. 3 chicken drumsticks cauliflower rice
Snacks. Full fat cottage cheese
No water but 6 (sofar)green tea
How am I doing?
After my last toilet experience on Thursday I haven't 'been' since! Advice please

CheddarGorgeous · 18/01/2020 17:07

Good-ish Saturday so far:

B: mushroom, egg, feta, spinach, tomatoes
L: (pub) small portion of mussels in creamy sauce. Mussels are 7g carbs but they were the only lowish carb option on the menu.
D: not sure yet, not feeling very hungry.

We've been out for most of the day so I haven't drunk enough water. Will start drinking litres now.

Harveywoo · 18/01/2020 17:07

B: mushroom, avocado, chicken slice spinach and egg fry up
L: the first of the birthday lunches, prawn tikka, chicken tikka morissa and sag paneer
D:,no chance, no space left. Might get somewhere near a boiled egg beater bedtime
Anyone else struggling a bit on the poo front Blush ? It’s a big diet change but I thought with all the veg that I wouldn’t as bunged up as I am

NoOneCaresInRealLife · 18/01/2020 17:13

Harveywoo yes I am having trouble on the poo front. Nothing Monday- Wednesday then 3 explosions(tmi) on Thursday and nothing since!
No weight loss either Hmm

HouseTornado · 18/01/2020 17:13

Harvey yes, if I don't drink at least 2l of water a day!

How much are you drinking? I think there's a guide on the pinned post from StuntNun?
