Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

Aww congratulations TenTonTessie lovely news! Grin

DiscontentedWoman · 17/01/2020 17:55

I've not done so well today - not had anything carby but i HAVE failed thus far today on veg and water so I'm trying to catch up. And now we are unexpectedly going out for dinner. (DD2 got star of the day, and DD1 30/30 on her maths test so its sort of a family tradition for SotD they get to pick somewhere for tea). Anyway I think it will be thai so I may end up with soup which should be OK on the carb front but likely fat free so just had a creamy coffee before we go and I'll have yogurt when we get back I think.
B: pork patties & egg
L: Eggs, cheese, mayo, roast chicken
D: tbc.....

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/01/2020 18:28

Bah. Am not doing so well. Had a dodgy egg yesterday so digestive upset and totm pain means I'm just gurgle & cramp from ribs to knees Angry

Have not eaten anything verboten, still up there with the green veg, butter and yoghurt, roast ham. Just not feeling the love right now.

Am going to watch a horrific film and go to bed. I am very bad at horrific films (hands over face) so has anyone seen The Revenant? Is it... awful... or just a bit gory?

Summery1 · 17/01/2020 18:35

I'm hanging in... just.

Congratulations on the little bean @Tentontessie. We took 3 years TTC and I remember the joy of the blue line. It's just great news.

@Rayna37 thank you for the great reminders.

@Hagbeth I don't know what 'too much' cream is. I've been having cream in coffee and bouillon, but tbh I'm not sure how much - I'm trying to watch the coffee anyway as I'm not sleeping the best.

I woke at 3am and had to be up at 5, so here's my day.

B1: 3 eggs & 2 sausages. Coffee with milk.
B2: 2 eggs, mushrooms, avocado. Coffee with milk.
Snacks: pork scratchings (3 packs Blush), rollitos (full pack Blush) 1 piece of cheese. Tzatziki.
So lots of salty processed food, but lowish carbs. But it was cold food on a cold day, so not very pleasant..

PseudoBadger · 17/01/2020 18:35

Gory and sad from memory

Summery1 · 17/01/2020 18:44

Funnily enough I drank loads of water.Crown Grin

Summery1 · 17/01/2020 18:46

I haven't seen that but I'm not able for horror films at all. They frighten the life out of me.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/01/2020 18:46

and sad?!

Right, it will make me feel much better about my own tat, then. Cheers, Badger Grin

AthelstaneTheUnready · 17/01/2020 18:48

I don't like horror films, Summery, but this is supposed to horrible, rather than horror. I think.

truelove · 17/01/2020 18:48

Also struggling a bit today. Haven’t fallen off the wagon but really missing fruit (a former diet staple as a veggie). Think I’m just a bit bored of eating cheese, eggs and nuts and need to plan a bit better for next week. It’s been a really busy work week as well which hasn’t helped. Looking forward to the weekend and will try and get some inspiration from the recipe thread. KOKO Smile

StuntNun · 17/01/2020 19:12

I'm trying an experiment today doing a 24-hour water fast. The longest I've ever managed is 23 hours which was meant to be a 24-hour fast but I got hungry and figured 23 hours was plenty. Grin I'm currently at 21 hours and counting. The hardest part was cooking dinner for the kids. It's remarkable because I used to eat all day long before I went low carb and I'd spend my time at work waiting for tea break or lunch break. What a difference low carb makes.

thanks StuntNun
thanks RozHuntleysStamp

Congratulations to TenTonTessie

And, who would have thought it was ok to fall / be pg on this WOE :)

theClitterati I love your self care list - I often think failing to pay enough attention to the kind of food i eat is a (lack of) self care.
All kinds of self care, inc 'mindful' eating of healthful food = Good

MsAwesomeDragon · 17/01/2020 19:26

I've had Greek yoghurt for breakfast, butternut squash soup for lunch and a chicken breast served with flgv for dinner.

I'm hungry today though and looking for inspiration for snacking on low carb stuff this evening. It's the sort of evening where I used to eat ice cream, crisps or chocolate, but obviously all of those are out. What else can I eat? I'm not actually hungry I don't think, just looking for something tasty and snacky.

Rshard · 17/01/2020 19:26

How are you feeling at this stage stuntnun?

B - eggs salmon avo
L - salad cheese ham mayo
D - mezze, olives halloumi rocket salami. Dh selflessly ate the bread!

Been to a local bar for dinner while dd swims and they had cauliflower shawarma on the menu but they’d ran out! Sounds lovely. Just had black coffee and water, happy to swerve the wine.

How’s everyone feeling for the first weekend of boot camp?

Hagbeth · 17/01/2020 19:30

@StuntNun Well done with the fasting!Smile Do you fell like you get an energy kick at sound 20 hours? I used to do OMAD and almost felt disappointed when the fasting was over!

Today I had:
B : Cream coffee, boiled eggs with mayo, tomatoes, avocado and salami
L: Salad, cucumber, tomatoes, mozzarella, home made blue cheese cream dressing, salami
D: Salad, cucumber, tomatoes, home made blue cheese dressing, pork belly

A couple of cream coffee during the day

Twit · 17/01/2020 19:32

Congratulations @Teapotdespot and @Tentontessie!
I too am ovulating and therefore I'm not weighing myself until monday. 😤😭

Today I ate...
B. Tea
Bulletproof coffee and pork scratchings
D. Sausage and mashed swede
T. Nothing, I'm not hungry.
3 litres of water so far.
I'm feeling a bit low today, so might get an early night. Have a good weekend, NO CHEATING AND DRINK YOUR WATER. (Please 😬)

Rayna37 · 17/01/2020 19:39

Food today:
Two hard boiled eggs and some cheese, post-swim
No mid morning snack again faints
Tuna mayo salad again plus some Greek yogurt
One stick of celery with pate
3 litres so far!

Dinner will be some pork saltimbocca from M&S with cavalo nero, broccoli and a bit of leftover cauli mash. Possibly a pate/celery starter and cheese afterwards. DH just in from the gym so keen to get cooking!

NoOneCaresInRealLife · 17/01/2020 19:45

Hi, should I be logging my foods on here daily? I've been using an app on my phone to keep track of everything. I'm finding that I'm not hitting the 'correct' amount of fat, protein or calories. Today, for instance, I am at 92g of fat and the app says I should have 145g- am I slowing my progress down by not eating enough fat?
Sorry for all the questions.
Also no dizziness today, thank you Stuntnun, but watery and rapid toilet action first thing in work! TMI

StuntNun · 17/01/2020 19:46

Good Rshard my tummy is rumbling but that just means it's empty, not that I'm hungry. I have a couple of boiled eggs in the fridge so if I get hungry I'll have those with mayo and then see how I feel. My DH is getting in late from the airport tonight so if he wants to eat when he gets home I'll have something with him. When I fast I like to set myself a target but I don't believe in meeting it just for the sake of meeting it. Anything over 14 hours is beneficial and then the benefits start to decline again after 36 hours.

OP posts:
StuntNun · 17/01/2020 19:50

I haven't had an energy kick Hagbeth but it's only my second attempt at a long fast. I routinely fast 16 hours overnight as my cortisol levels are ridiculously high so if I eat in the morning it can mess up my insulin levels. I don't think I could manage OMAD (One Meal A Day), do you have to eat loads at one sitting?

NooneCares it helps to keep you on track if you post your food on here each day. Don't worry about not hitting your fat macro so long as you're following the rules, it's only a factor when you're near your target weight.

NoOneCaresInRealLife · 17/01/2020 20:08

Thank you Stuntnun. You're a Star.

BIWI · 17/01/2020 20:50

For those of you struggling - it's only Friday! Please, please, please don't give in and cheat. This is not a very forgiving way of eating, and if you cheat now you'll just undo all the good work you've done since Monday.

MonaChopsis · 17/01/2020 20:55

Breakfast was 2 eggs scrambled in the frying pan that I cooked last nights sausages in!! Sooooo good. I was definitely being one with the fat! Lunch was my normal Greek yoghurt combo, dinner on Friday night is normally fish'n'chips so I tried to adjust by having chilli salmon and salad with a few celeriac fries. The fries didn't work for me as an end of week treat, I'll have to find another option!!

waspfig · 17/01/2020 21:12

I'm feeling quite strong at the moment. It's helping that DH has decided to join in with me so I don't feel like I'm missing out on carby snacks. We had also agreed to do dry January over Xmas so id already made peace with no wine! A 4 pound loss (as of yesterday) is more than I've lost in a week on any other diet so I'm chuffed.

We've been plotting our weekend meals and he was very happy to realise we can eat eggs Benedict for breakfast and butter chicken for dinner!

I seem to have got dry skin on and around my lips today. Is this coincidence or linked to diet? I'm drinking at least 3.5L of water each day so not sure I'm dehydrated!

StuntNun · 17/01/2020 21:28

The weekend can be challenging but it's definitely worth staying on track. Just imagine yourself coming on to the week 2 thread on Monday to tell us all how you've done. We've already seen some spectacular losses but remember every pound off counts. So come on Losers Wink onwards and downwards.
