StuntNun · 13/01/2020 05:56

Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

Well inspired by all you creamy coffee drinkers, I tried cream in my tea this afternoon and it's actually fine! So I shall be switching for the foreseeable.

MsAwesomeDragon · 18/01/2020 18:24

@RozHuntleysStump I'm thrilled to hear your success with diabetes. I was diagnosed in July, with a blood sugar of 89. I know this lchf woe is good for diabetes but I've never met anyone who had such high levels as me who has managed to reverse it. My aunt has gone back down to normal levels but she was only ever in the 50s. You've definitely inspired me to keep on with this! Thanks.

My breakfast today was so late I skipped lunch, and I'm still not really hungry. I do need to eat something but I don't think I'm in the mood for the lasagne I had planned. I've got some chicken curry in the freezer that is low carb (not very high fat but I'll put a dollop of FF yogurt on it to increase the day content), so I'll have that with some bare naked rice (I've never tried that, so I don't know how I'll like it, but I'm willing to try it)

RozHuntleysStump · 18/01/2020 18:37

You can definitely do it @MsAwesomeDragon. I did this diet on and off throughout last year and in September I joined the ramblers and do 6 miles walk each Monday. Also dog walks etc. I was in such a state this time last year. I’ve still got a way to go but I’ve come a long way.

Rshard · 18/01/2020 18:56

Really interested to hear more about fasting later on stuntnun, you smashed 24 hours!

Lionsleepstonight · 18/01/2020 19:07

I'm drinking 3.5 litres a day and only had 1 poo since Monday. Will that sort itself out?

MsAwesomeDragon · 18/01/2020 19:55

Can I ask about the effect of all this fat on cholesterol levels? I've been told mine is a bit on the high side and I have til May to bring it down or they're planning on putting me on statins, which I would like to avoid if at all possible. I was told to reduce the bad fats but can eat good fats. So what has this woe done to people's cholesterol levels? I do think the fats I'm using in cooking may well balance out the fat reduction by not eating crisps and chocolate Blush

RozHuntleysStump · 18/01/2020 20:25

I admit my cholesterol has risen a bit. It’s difficult because I also want and need to lose weight and this works for that.

StuntNun · 18/01/2020 20:43

NoOneCares and Harveywoo I find a teaspoon of coconut oil in rooibos tea or black coffee sorts things out in the toilet department. Blush

MsAwesome one of my T2D clients went from taking 90 units of insulin a day to none at all within weeks of going low carb. It's totally doable.

In reply to your query about cholesterol MsAwesome the overall lipid profile generally improves on a low carb diet but LDL cholesterol sometimes increases initially. It's definitely worth reading up on statins as there are no proven benefits in women at all, or indeed in men under 65 or who haven't already had one heart attack.

Roz if you're worried about your cholesterol feel free to PM me about it as most GPs only seem to look at total cholesterol and don't have a good understanding of the lipid profile or ratios.

I'm not so experienced and cooking pork belly is something I've always avoided as it's a fatty cut of meat. There are lots of Nepali people in my community and I'm always smelling the delicious pork dishes, so I took some inspiration and used Nepali inspired marinade. It's basically a dry rub - cumin and curry powder, garlic powder, chilli, turmeric, Salt-N-Pepa with just a tiny bit of soy sauce and lemon juice and rubbed it all over the pork - let it sit for a bit and then just cooked in the oven. was super yummy.

I've had a very challenging day with my 12-year-old being very very difficult and challenging, and then I went and lost my keys with my only car key on it. Still not found the keys. It's been pretty horrible day all in actually. But held it together with the food without any problem. Might have a bit of water to catch up now.

PseudoBadger · 18/01/2020 21:18

Pseudo those charcuterie crisps are easy to make yourself

Amazing thanks @StuntNun

DiscontentedWoman · 18/01/2020 21:56

B: creamy coffee, slice of cheese
L: pâté, salad, oil and vinegar
D: prawn tikka masala, lots of Greek yog.

On the toilet from, I seem to be having the opposite problem over the last couple of days! Blush

Need to catch up with the last litre of water before bed. Energy levels are pretty good

lurknolinger · 18/01/2020 22:57

Venus do you make your own laksa paste? If so would you mind sharing your recipe, I've not had much success so far.

Rayna37 · 19/01/2020 08:03

NoOneCares I'd say not enough veg, that'll help you go to the loo. You need your FLGV! Also bear in mind green tea doesn't count as herbal as it still has caffeine in it, you need to be drinking actual water or maybe chamomile or some of the various other tips there have been on here for flavouring water. Be wary of cottage cheese, even full fat isn't that high in fat and the carbs in it can add up.

HouseTornado · 19/01/2020 08:29

Good morning! Hope everyone has a nice day planned?

Meals today:

BF: Cheese
L: Egg mayo salad
D: Chicken sausages with buttered broccoli.

Water!

truelove · 19/01/2020 08:34

Was hoping for a bit of a lie in this morning but nope, wide awake at 6am (normal get up time during the week). Had a good day yesterday. FindIng it better to not eat breakfast. Had a few almonds at 1ish than a cheese salad mid afternoon. California scrambled eggs for dinner (Joe Wicks recipe). A mini whoosh on the scales this morning, probably helped by the fact I finally went to the loo “properly” for the first time since Monday Blush

Doilooklikeatourist · 19/01/2020 08:51

Beautiful winters morning here , cold and crisp ( -2 )
Didn’t manage a walk last night , as we were really busy at work , DH suggested we just drive into town and walk round the centre , but looked at me and said he thought I shouldn’t go out , just rest up ( so I must have looked really bad ! )

Didn’t wake til 8-15 , so will have a lazy morning and a late Breakfast / brunch
B bacon , avocado , poached eggs
D chicken something with FLGV

I’ll take a snack of pork scratchings and some cheese , along with my water bottle , as I’m definitely ( fingers crossed ) out for a coastal / country walk today

TheClitterati · 19/01/2020 09:00

Oh crap we are out of eggs and I still can't find my car keys!

Creamy coffee & key hunting this morning

Doilooklikeatourist · 19/01/2020 09:03

@TheClitterati, I found my keys once , on the roof of the car
Having torn the house apart looking for them

tartantroosers · 19/01/2020 09:17

Please could you add me to the spreadsheet? I30lbs Thank you

TonicAndLotsofGin · 19/01/2020 09:35

Morning all, I am actually in week 3, since I started in the 1st of Jan and after fantastic weight loss inially, I put weight on after my weigh in. The good news is I stuck with the rules and I am now less than I was at the start of the week which is a relief. I don't post much but I am finding this thread really useful for keeping me on track and as a reminder to keep drinking water.

TheClitterati · 19/01/2020 09:38

@Doilooklikeatourist Grin

I'm pretty Sure they are in the house as I have my door key onto. We got back from Kids club on Friday evening and I've not seen them since then. I have checked the car though but it is locked. I only have one car key

Mandelinka · 19/01/2020 09:43

Morning ladies
theClitterati good luck with your car keys!
I hate misplacing keys or wallet, it gives me proper anxiety attack.

Is anyone doing oil pulling on their teeth? I’ve started about year ago and really enjoy it. I use organic coconut oil and swish most morning for 20 mins. I’ve got tooth infection, it started in June last year, had couple of courses of antibiotics which did nothing (actually got really bad reaction to the second round) so did lot of research for weeks and weeks as wasn’t really happy to have a root canal, and found natural infection supplement ( basically natural antibiotics without any side effects) on US preppers website and within couple of days the infection improved by 95%. I’m still taking the supplement now ( if anyone is interested, PM me as I don’t want to look like I’m pushing a supplement) it keeps any colds or infections away.

Food today:
B: green tea
L: leftover cauliflower pizza, cucumber salad W egg
D: Possibly more glorious fish ( hubby away for work so can’t moan about the smell)

Rshard · 19/01/2020 10:22

Hope you find your keys clitterati!

Forgot to log yesterday’s food

B - sausages scrambled eggs
L - salad cheese ham mayo
D - broccoli halloumi bake

So much water and too much black coffee. Will eat less cheese today except the leftover bake, but I didn’t have any other dairy except butter in the eggs so not too bad

And today

B - scrambled eggs salmon avo
L - leftover bake as above
D - tbc

Gorgeous winters day here too, aiming to get four for a walk at some point

Notwatchingtvtoday · 19/01/2020 10:32

theClitterati good luck with your keys and if anyone could tell me where I have put my very expensive prescription reading glasses I would be very thankful, luckily I have a spare pair, they are not on my head (I often look for them and then find them on my head). Off to check the cars in a minute.

I stayed the same today, but as I’ve lost 4.5 lbs this week I’m happy with that.

B Greek yogurt, Tsp cream, Tsp Linwood, Tsp crumbled frozen raspberries
1 tea with tiny splash milk, 2 coffees each with tsp cream - I need to get back into butter in my coffee

L scrambled eggs and avocado
D M& S roast in bag butter chicken, with FLGV

3 litres of water

Notwatchingtvtoday · 19/01/2020 10:38

green tea please be careful with drinking lots of green tea, especially green tea bought from abroad, it can be very high in caffeine and can cause caffeine related problems.
We no longer have it in the house after my husband ended up in A&E with heart palpitations when we lived abroad and he drank to much of it.
