I couldn't see another post so thought I'd create one.

There is a police press conference this afternoon. I can't see a time for this but it's sounding like a routine one.

Just mentioning here as it was discussed on the last thread.. the little girl who was found last night after going missing in Galashields seems to have been taken by someone. A 53 year old man has been arrested 😞 what is wrong with people?!

Someone had posted her strava walks somewhere that I saw and it seems she usually goes round the outside of the field/fields and in only 2 of the 15 walks she went near the bench area. I just don’t see that she’s fell in and it’s now heartbreaking as unless there’s some major breakthrough on where else she could be that hasn’t been established in the last 11 days it looks like they’re at a brick wall 😢 So
praying this isn’t another Claudia Lawrence type case

She has to literally walk right past the bench to get in and out of the field.

Goldpaw · 07/02/2023 14:56

I've read so many conflicting things about this. First I read that the phone had been found on the ground and someone picked it up and put it on the bench at 9.33. Then I read that it was on the bench when someone found it.

I think the phone was triangulated so that at 9.10 it was in the field, and by 9.20 was on (or by?) the bench.

I've read one bit about a man who said something about fishing bait, but who knows how he ties in or whether he was one of the witnesses who saw her.

And about Nicola herself who was described as wearing an ankle length coat and it turns out to be knee length.

It's hard to conclude whether the police are trying to keep things vague because they have a more definite line of enquiry that they're working on and want to flush out someone, or if they've assumed a stance from the start and haven't done a particularly good job of pursuing alternatives.

Are they still saying the phone was NEXT TO the bench rather than on it initially?

It’s very unclear and I think it’s actually a key point.

The police have said ‘at’, ‘in the area’ of and ‘on’ at different points. A friend of NB said that it was found by a walker on the ground 2 feet from the bench.

No idea which of these reports is correct.

Bluebellwood129 · 07/02/2023 14:57

This seems to suggest there's an area of the river that hasn't been searched by police - do you think this correct or more media mis-information?

ThighMistress · 07/02/2023 14:58

@JoonT Vile for discussing something at the bus stop? What are you doing on here then? It’s just a virtual bus stop or garden fence. You’d have been a bit stuck for conversation pre t’internet.

Of course people discuss news incidents that are close to home, so to speak. The McCanns were dissected for ages.

The sleuthing business has ramped up in recent times and obviously people physically visiting the river site and taking selfies is horrible.

Whiskers4 · 07/02/2023 14:58

I read that there's a way of determining when the phone became static (9.20) - that's why it's a 10 window they're trying to work out.

Return2thebasic · 07/02/2023 14:58

"The fact that she is a Mum, doing what so many of us do every week, going about her normal life, has really hit home with alot of people just how precious life is and how everything can be turned upside down in a minute. I really hope there’s a miracle and the little girl’s get their Mum back."

Totally agree.

Leftbutcameback · 07/02/2023 14:59

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with discussing it, and expressing our concern and how baffling it all is. What is wrong is those accusing people on social media. and hampering the police work. It’s natural for people to talk about someone who is a lot like us, a woman with a normal life and family who has literally vanished.

I was one of those who was convinced Nicola must have sadly gone into the river but now I’m not convinced at all. The police seemed to have worked really hard searching the river, and the new dive company is belt and braces. I don’t hunk they will find her in the river.

DorritLittle · 07/02/2023 15:00

I think it is human nature to be concerned and wonder if there have been any updates. This poor woman has completely vanished. I was also upset about the poor headteacher. Obviously there is a difference between concern and harmful speculation but they are not the same thing.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/02/2023 15:01

I wonder if the press conference will announce a change to a criminal investigation?

Goldpaw · 07/02/2023 15:01

BluIsTheColor · 07/02/2023 14:55

Nonsense.
Half our meetings are like that.

Same here. Some meetings I'm expected to participate in. Others I can mute and turn video off, and potter about listening to it knowing I won't be expected to contribute.

I don't know much about Teams, but in a Zoom when the meeting ends the host ends the meeting. from what I gather here, Teams stays open until the individual logs off, is that right?

I find your post misogynistic and ageist.

Why wouldn’t women of any age be allowed to discuss something so shocking happening in broad daylight?

pigsinoodies · 07/02/2023 15:03

Strava route of her regular walk from The Sun

I’m in a big teams meeting at the moment where we have been muted and cameras turned off, apart from the presenters. The last thing I’d want is someone walking along bobbing up and down the screen

It's human nature to discuss this kind of thing.

On a very base level, we want to solve puzzles.

And on a deeper level we're mostly women here, a good percentage of us having kids, or regularly walking dogs in the countryside, and we want to know that a fellow woman is safe, and that we'll be safe too.

Mirabai · 07/02/2023 15:09

My concern is that if she’s never found in the river, and to be fair there is no evidence that she ended up in the river - this will turn into a Claudia Lawrence whereby the failure to treat the case as criminal from the start (while I understand why) stymies the case.

RoseAndRose · 07/02/2023 15:10

If she habitually tracks her walk on Strava, then its possible they may have found out when the phone became stationary from that (Strava is a US company, but it has a UK office and I dare say police could get info held by the company from them).

That assumes that she logged using the app on her phone. It's possible she logged her walk via a wearable (smart watch or fitness tracker of some sort) and uploaded to Strava later. In which case, it would be tracking her movements, not the phone's.

So if wearing it, and recording, it ought to say where she went. So I'm guessing that she wasn't wearing that sort of device that day

Family friend says maybe it's time to start looking down other avenues.

If she was on a Teams meeting then the app keeps the device "open" from logging in to the meeting until you log out. Or all versions of the software that I use do. What I found more odd was that there was a report that she was on mute and with her camera off the whole time of the meeting. Nowhere I know would allow that, and it seems rather odd that they did. You may as well not be in a meeting if you don't have any participation at all
Perfectly normal in my job. In fact sometimes we are reminded to put mute on until it is our time to deliver an update or report. In the early days of covid when we started using teams for the first time we could hear other peoples washing machines, amazon deliveries arriving and dogs barking.
Mute is used to stop background noise.
We could choose if we had the camera on or not for many meetings.
So to me it isnt odd at all.

Mine too
The thought that someone might get away with harming her makes me feel sick.

I find myself wondering about about the phone being back in the area of the bench as if was returned there.

I am also confused as to how they know where the phone was at 9:20.

SafferUpNorth · 07/02/2023 15:12

I'm wondering whether the police press conference might be to announce that they're changing tack on the investigation and now considering abduction / third party involvement. The expert search guy has pretty much ruled out accidental drowning. His explanations for why a body should have been found very quickly if it was a drowning are very plausible. To be fair the family have not sounded convinced by the accident theory.

Andylion · 07/02/2023 15:13

BluIsTheColor · 07/02/2023 14:55

Nonsense.
Half our meetings are like that.

I agree. And many people participate in Teams meeting solely via chat.

KitesFlyHigh · 07/02/2023 15:13

Did she enter the fields via the route not covered by CCTV as well as going missing in the part not covered by CCTV? Because the thing that confuses me is they have released CCTV images of the 2 people in the area they thought could be potential witnesses, but the CCTV images of Nicola were taken from her ring doorbell. Was she not picked up on any CCTV or recording equipment for her entire journey from school to the fields? That would seem strange in itself.
