He actually did it!

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 20/11/2022 20:29

I'm clinging to the hope that it was fake and a publicity stunt and he will give it away instead

Ponesta · 20/11/2022 20:24

I can't believe all the holier than thou responses. It's 12 years since Qatar were awarded the World Cup. There was outrage then, but not from some of the people objecting now. People have carried on holidaying in the Middle East. Flying on Qatar Airways. Shopping in Harrods. And people will watch the World Cup matches, especially if England or Wales do well. Token politics and posturing, and envy.

I can promise you I haven’t done any of these things, and I won’t be watching the football, @Ponesta.

£150million?! Are you sure OP? Everything I’ve read online says £10million.

I read that it’s 10m initially but there’s a bigger deal of 150m spread over the next 7 years

Milesty1 · 20/11/2022 21:23

whatever Joe has done to the money, it’s his money and he has raised the issues far more with this stunt than if he had just donated the money. Why are people holding him responsible for people who are struggling instead of the government? Why haven’t people got the same energy for the British government who spunked millions offering bogus contracts to their mates during covid. They may have well have shredded it.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 20/11/2022 21:54

Thomaslovesalison · 20/11/2022 19:06

Do you see that shredding it makes the point far more than donating it a charity would?

And I’m sure all the charities that could really have done with ten grand are delighted that he’s ‘made his point’. The point being that he’s an attention seeking twat, yes?

dementedma · 20/11/2022 22:02

I've always found Lycett smug and repellant. He gives me the creeps

GroggyLegs · 20/11/2022 22:59

It's ALL repellent & gross.

I have no respect for Joe's attempted emotional blackmail & manipulative behaviour which is fucking tone deaf & all about Joe Lycett. As if DB was going to capitulate.

And I have no respect for very rich men who actively promote shitty regimes for cash they don't need. Not just DB but the greasy palms that gave the world cup to Qatar.

And while I'm ranting, the shock expressed that gay couples (one would assume mainly men) have been advised to curb their behaviour in Qatar - what the fuck do they think women do daily across the globe, including the UK? It's not the oppression Olympics, but why is it only noticed & reacted to with shock & protest when it affects men just living their lives & minding their own business?

Bunch of hypocritical arseholes.

RoseBucket · 20/11/2022 23:08

It’s certainly got a lot of people talking, many haven’t heard of him until this.

He does campaign for a lot of different causes especially for individuals, but this is obviously closer to him on a personal level, although I hope it wasn’t real cash!

He has a gig in a few weeks for Crisis so it would be hypocritical but equally if it’s real, it’ll be his own money and he achieved what he set out to do, raise awareness.

MarshaMelrose · 20/11/2022 23:14

People holidaying in the Middle East. No.

Shopping in Harrods. No.

People will watch the World Cup matches Never.

Flying on Qatar Airways. No. Oh wait. Oops. Doha Airport is lovely too. Sorry.

ItsBritneyBitch45 · 20/11/2022 23:53

Why the hell would anyone shred 10K?! Wouldn’t it have been better to donate that money to a LGTB charity or whatever in support of the people that Qater don’t ‘approve of’

If he'd given the money to a gay rights charity instead of shredding it it would have been spent on raising awareness to far less effect than this has raised awareness.

What has it raised awareness of that people didn’t already know though?

That’s unfair: I didn’t already know that he would do something that seems so spectacularly stupid so I’m now aware of that.

I don't think it's actually raised any more awareness. I think the way he's done it means people are talking about him being a twat and the money.

If he'd have given it to a charity publicly people would be more likely to want to learn more about the charity.

vera99 · 21/11/2022 07:30

They should get in line as we did back in the old days and respect the host country's culture....

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 21/11/2022 07:41

His money his choice how to use it.
Potentially more impact than donating to charity.
I think Beckham’s decision is in worse taste, or someone spending thousands on travelling to the World Cup, or on a holiday to Dubai for example.
Lycett is using his money to prove a point, people holidaying in luxury in Dubai etc are using their money to further support regimes who abuse humans.

vera99 · 21/11/2022 09:28

Nick Ferrari is piling into Joe now - that's it, if I was wavering it's fully behind JL now - he has converted the money into knowledge. Just re-listening to KLFamazing stuff they virtually invented ambient house music - the Mozart's of EDM. Massive respect and the real origin of the smiley too 😀

DragonflyNights · 21/11/2022 12:16

Well, as expected, it was BS, he did not shred that money, he did it to get people talking (he says)

I'd like to see evidence of his donation

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 21/11/2022 12:30

I doubt he'd say he'd donated the £10K to charity prior to sending the first tweet on the matter if he couldn't back it up.

Lots of the people who were angry at him for apparently shredding the cash will now find a way to be angry that he hasn't.

People don't tend to like liars

frazzledali · 21/11/2022 12:38

How do you feel now, you big babies?

So many stupid stupid people.

are you fuming?

What a shame for you.

AutumnCrow · 21/11/2022 12:38

I did say early on that it was a spoof. After his Liz Truss satire, it was pretty obvious really that it's his style. I daresay it's a bit marmite.

I'd be relieved if it wasn't real money, obscene if it was right now
