🙄 Whatever, Hun. I didn't say she should be ashamed, did I ? Just letting her know who and what he supports.

David Beckham supports 'the T'? What's that then? You means he supports the forced teaming of sexual orientation with 'gender identity' that Stonewall managed to slip through from 2016 onwards?

He supports Mermaids?

Funny I've never heard Beckham articulate anything along those lines, ever.

<ponders whether David Beckham has read the Cass Review>

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2022 15:39

Why not donate it to charity ?

I reckon he will.

It's a spoof, like the live panel appearance with Liz Truss and Laura Kuenssberg.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/11/2022 15:42

Please can we make this thread about gay rights? And women? Trans rights are complicated in the ME where they are quite keen on gay men becoming women. Of course lesbians don't get the option. It's STILL gay people's and women's rights whichever way you slice it.

Rowthe · 20/11/2022 14:54

It's not coming across as honourable. It just screams

" look at me and how much money I have to burn"

This. ^ It's a completely horrific thing to do too, considering the cost of living crisis. Absolute plum he is.

girlmom21 · 20/11/2022 15:43

He's massively overestimated how important he is and how little impact £10,000 will make if he's was expecting David Beckham to actually care about his publicity stunt.

soundsofthesixties · 20/11/2022 15:46

Am I the only person that doesn't believe it?

paintitallover · 20/11/2022 15:47

They are both idiots on this occasion.

More horrific than being paid millions to support a shitty country? The money isn't going to any of us and the hyper rich 'steal' more in a day than JL shredded.

It's like everyone can conceive of 10K but can't when it's millions.

I think the queuing up for QE's coffin was a very good indication that publicity is ALL DB cares about.

DaisyWaldron · 20/11/2022 15:59

I find it odd that people are getting angry about one celebrity "wasting" £10k on a human rights publicity campaign but not by the people spending far more than that on actually attending the world cup and boosting the economy and international status of a country woefully disrespectful of human rights.

southlondoner02 · 20/11/2022 16:01

I heard Joe Lycett talking about this on a podcast. He sounded genuinely upset and angry that someone who he felt had been an ally to the LGBT community (on the cover of Attitude magazine when there is so much homophobia in football, gay friends ) had taken the money from Qatar. I think he thought the publicity it would generate would impact Beckham, which felt somewhat naïve. I would suggest Beckham is all about brand Beckham and the money that brings whether that be posing for gay mags or taking money off dodgy countries.

Holymackerelhead · 20/11/2022 16:05

Well David Beckham was hardly going to pull out of the arrangement or present himself to be roasted about Qatar’s record on human rights.

So where else was it going to go?

Am a fan of Joe Lycett but don’t think this was a good or well-thought-out stunt.

sashagabadon · 20/11/2022 16:05

What an idiot

sleepwouldbenice · 20/11/2022 16:05

CatJumperTwat · 20/11/2022 14:04

People are really missing the point of this one.

Nobody would have cared if the threat was "pull out of your deal or I give £10k to charity." Nobody would log in to a livestream to watch him donate £10k. Papers wouldn't have reported it.

Exactly this
The fact this thread exists is the publicity the issue needs. And 10k is actually a cheap way to highlight it

Lesson learned for Joe Lycett, money is king for people like DB.

torquewench · 20/11/2022 16:08

I think this'll backfire on JP, trying to coerce DB into complying isn't a good look no matter how noble the intention.

PrincessJanet · 20/11/2022 16:13

Well David Beckham was hardly going to pull out of the arrangement or present himself to be roasted about Qatar’s record on human rights.

Probably not, but it might have motivated him to donate the money to help those who are subjugated by Qatar, or to speak out against the human rights abuses.

Unfortunately, I agree that Lycett has probably been quite naive in thinking his stunt would make people care.

Both things are bad.

Other people accepting millions from Qatar doesn’t make burning £10k laudable. Arguing which is worse just feels a bit meaningless. They’re not related.

The money burning was done under the guise of positive action / activism, but ultimately seems just wasteful and crass, particularly as it was obvious DB was not going to respond.

handbagsandholidays · 20/11/2022 16:20

Our royal family took money from
Qatar. Whilst I wholly disagree with many Qatari policies, I don't think boycott is the answer. Think of the number of people who are relying on the World Cup for their income, who are in jobs because of it. Is boycotting really the answer? There are so many parts of the world where they have barbaric rules and practices e.g child marriage in the USA, slave labour in factories across India, china, Bangladesh and Turkey. DB is promoting the World Cup. You can't blame him for the Qatari policies. Personally I think having a gay icon as the poster boy for the event being held in their country is quite fitting!

Thomaslovesalison · 20/11/2022 16:21

I think he will go through with it, and I think it's had the effect he wanted of highlighting the appalling regime in Qatar and DB's repellent behaviour in putting money over basic morality. I do wonder whether DB will say he's donating a large portion of the 150 mill to a charity that supports gay rights. I think that's the only way he can redeem himself even slightly. But good on JL for highlighting this.

Holymackerelhead · 20/11/2022 16:22

Peacelily38 · 20/11/2022 14:17

Fed up with most celebrity's to be honest, they are either virtue signallers or sellouts, or both.

I don't understand also why the only idea floated is how bad it is for LGBTQ people, forgetting about how women are treated..
Our first game is with Iran...
But I guess caring for females isn't fashionable these days...

100% this

No one is ever as interested in discrimination against / oppression of women, even though generally speaking it’s far more pervasive and on a much larger scale (more individuals affected) than any of these other issues.

Tbh, I see that as a symptom of the issue itself – the issues of male/female power systems are endemic in any family, and you don’t generally get wholly separate male or female communities, so I think it’s way more deeply internalised across societies than other issues.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 20/11/2022 16:23

I get his intentions but it all feels a little tone death at the moment when so many people are struggling financially right now.

How is life for women in Qatar anyway? They seem to be forgotten.

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2022 16:26

If he gave it to woman's refuge or children in need or , indeed , any charity i'd be more impressed than I am by this , although I like to think it's not ' real ' money and just a stunt by him.

PurpleButterflyWings · 20/11/2022 16:40

CheeseIsMyPatronus · 20/11/2022 14:44

I haven't heard anything BUT criticism for Beckham - most people are disgusted by him on this.

Knowing what people are going through, I did find the shredding video deeply distasteful. Yes, it was a lot of publicity for £10K, but that's real, actual cash tthat some people would give their eye tyeeth for this winter.

Agree. ^
