He actually did it!

The KLF burned a million pounds and look where that got them 😂

CheeseIsMyPatronus · 20/11/2022 14:44

I haven't heard anything BUT criticism for Beckham - most people are disgusted by him on this.

Knowing what people are going through, I did find the shredding video deeply distasteful. Yes, it was a lot of publicity for £10K, but that's real, actual cash tthat some people would give their eye tyeeth for this winter.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/11/2022 14:47

I'm glad someone mentioned the KLF. That was a LOT of real money.

The fact that so many straight men are happy to make such a lot of money from a country where women (particularly lesbians) and gay men are treated so poorly (along with the poor workers) isn't a surprise.

They can all fuck off with their virtue signaling bollocks because it's clear when it's about women, poverty or gay rights, they'd take the money and STFU.

And I really liked Lineker. Beckham's always been a twat.

vera99 · 20/11/2022 14:48

They are legends in their own lifetimes and happy folk by all accounts but slightly regretful that they did that. 10 grand would have been chicken feed to them....

Tbf to Joe he does good deeds with his stunts and the 10k is cheap advertising to make much more with the benefit of embarrassing DB.

“[...] Before Drummond and Cauty allegedly burned a million pounds on the Scottish Isle of Jura, they first tried to sell £1,000,000 nailed to a board to London’s Tate Gallery for £750,000. The Tate said it was a security risk, despite the K Foundation pointing out that they would immediately make a profit of a quarter of a million, which they could use to buy some ‘real’ art. [...]”

What a knob. Has everyone forgot the cost of living crisis? Shredding money is fine and dandy now?

And you know he supports the "t" in LGBT? Why omit the letter?

Why yes, omitting one letter from the alphabet people's initialism is discusting. OP should be ashamed, totes.

GrammarTeacher · 20/11/2022 14:50

@ladygindiva people did protest when they were awarded the cup. The world was shocked and many of us appalled that they got it (and Russia before them). Many many people were talking about it but it was too far in the future to get any traction.
There were actually many reasons for Qatar to NOT be awarded the contest.

drivinmecrazy · 20/11/2022 14:51

Has David beckham spoken up in support of LGBTQ community in Qatar?
Didn't think so.

I think using "LGB+" is just my age showing really. Others could be equally as concerned about you omitting the QIA2S.

Beckham's argument is that he is doing it to help integrate Qatar with the rest of the world. The "be in it to change it" argument I guess. Fair enough, in which case he'll be publicly donating the £150m fee to LGB+ issues?

Also a generous donation to the security guards at the World Cup earning a pittance and living in squalor.

Rowthe · 20/11/2022 14:54

PrincessJanet · 20/11/2022 14:12

I cant understand the life or how the mind of anyone is who able to just shred that much money works.

Presumably because he feels very strongly about LGB+ rights in Qatar and considers £10k was good value for money. Arguably a far more honorable spend than the £160 I've just spent on some Doc Martens.

It's not coming across as honourable. It just screams

" look at me and how much money I have to burn"

MayThe4th · 20/11/2022 14:57

Virtue signalling knob.

Why has nobody protested before now?

Qatar were awarded the World Cup 6 years ago, and they choose the day of the opening of the World Cup to start making protests? Why not before now?

This was always about money. From the time that Qatar bribed FIFA to the money the players are getting for going there.

People virtue signalling about LGBTQ rights in here mean nothing.

I’d rather talk about the protests of the brave women in Iran who really will hopefully make a difference to women’s rights in another country.

Qatar is done. And in 4 weeks it’ll be over with, and the virtue signallers will disappear back from whence they came. In fact they’ll probably do that when England are knocked out and go home. And we’ll forget about Qatar.

But the prot4ests in Iran will continue, and hopefully they really will make a difference, and they really are making sacrifices, as opposed to some attention seeking twat who probably shredded fake money and is waiting for his pat on the back.

pompomdaisy · 20/11/2022 14:58

He obviously feels quite strongly about gay rights but I feel quite strongly about the cost of living crisis and that was just insulting to many people who can't afford to live right now.

🙄 Whatever, Hun. I didn't say she should be ashamed, did I ? Just letting her know who and what he supports.

barskits · 20/11/2022 15:01

PrincessJanet · 20/11/2022 14:04

The point is, that it has to be shocking. Are you more concerned at Lycett shredding £10k of his own money OR Beckham validating Qatar on the world stage in returning for pocketing £150m to his already huge wealth.

What's more shocking?

I am not a Lycett fan, but I think that this is a very effective protest.

Every footballer, spectator, organising body, tv crew and everybody else to do with organising the World Cup is validating Qatar.

Including everyone watching it on telly or buying World Cup merchandise anywhere else in the world.

So if they can all do it with impunity, why shouldn't Beckham take their money?

drivinmecrazy · 20/11/2022 15:02

We have (limited) sanctions in place with Iran. Our government have spoken on support of women protesting (however weakly).
Qatar? We've not done anything except for our Foreign Office recommending that LGBTQ football supporters keep a low profile and not to aggravate the status quo

saleorbouy · 20/11/2022 15:04

Not the most effective use of 10k. Could have been used to promote the issues in question and disparity in how others are mis-treated within the middle East particularly.

I totally agree. The real scandal here is FIFA and corruption, greed and money stripping the morality out of football.

I support Trans rights too. Do I think that a person can change their sex? No. Do I think that a transwoman is a woman? No. Do I think that transexuals have a right to live their life free from hate and fear? Yes.

Which is obscene, and all about the money.

6,500 workers died building the damned thing. Foreign workers were trapped and treated like slaves. Qatari women have no rights and have male guardiasns who control their lives. Qatar is vile for many, many reasons.

BellePeppa · 20/11/2022 15:19

I don’t really see the point of it. If he wanted to raise publicity there are many other things he could have done - change his name to David Beckham for instance like he did with Hugo Boss. That would have riled DB up more. What does DB care about £10k ?

Januarcelebration · 20/11/2022 15:20

Me and my dd discussed this last night. She is gay and feels quite strongly that they are both dicks who are using the gay community to make money and get attention.

I dislike anyone who says ‘if you do as I say I will give money to charity, if you don’t do as I say, I wont give money to charity’. It shows they do not give a shit about the people who the charity helps at all. Either give the money to charity or don’t. Don’t hold money trying to get someone to change their behaviour.

When he said ‘you will be making me commit a crime’ I rolled my eyes so hard. No one is making him commit a crime.

DB and his involvement in all this is shocking and I don’t like it. I don’t like the tournament is there at all. Don’t like FIFA or their response. Still doesn’t think I feel JL actually gives a shit or did anything good. And quite frankly if I was DB I would have given a 100k to charity instead of backing down to that sort of crap, even if I had reservations about what I was doing. Besides which DB backing out because of JL was never going to happen. It’s not like DB didn’t know about the issues until JL spoke up. People have been discussing this for months even years.

I wonder if he has a tour coming up? £10000 is cheap national publicity

Exactly - I'm sure he means in sincerely

But he has a book out and this is excellent publicity for him.

Anyone who doesn't realise this is the fool, not him.

PurpleButterflyWings · 20/11/2022 15:28

CatJumperTwat · 20/11/2022 14:04

People are really missing the point of this one.

Nobody would have cared if the threat was "pull out of your deal or I give £10k to charity." Nobody would log in to a livestream to watch him donate £10k. Papers wouldn't have reported it.

@CatJumperTwat

It's made fuck-all difference to ANYthing. Just wasted £10,000. Although it's very likely fake money anyway. He's a bit of an attention seeking nincompoop IMO.

DinaofCloud9 · 20/11/2022 15:32

He's such an attention seeker.
