He actually did it!

Massively insulting to everyone struggling to see an attention seeker shred money like that.

Ponesta · 20/11/2022 14:12

I'm not misunderstanding. I know what he was trying to do and there is a shock factor in someone shredding so much money. But it hasn't achieved anything significant and the money could have been put to better use.

Georgeskitchen · 20/11/2022 14:16

I hope he hasn't.

Yes it's his money to do with what he wishes but not in the current where there are many people in dire straits. Why is he singling out Beckham ? Plenty of others out there earning big money , Garys Lineker and Neville to name but two ( both virtue signalling hypocrites)
Plenty of good causes would make good use of 10 grand. Food banks, hospices etc.
If he has done I I don't think he's done himself any favours

Peacelily38 · 20/11/2022 14:17

Fed up with most celebrity's to be honest, they are either virtue signallers or sellouts, or both.

I don't understand also why the only idea floated is how bad it is for LGBTQ people, forgetting about how women are treated..
Our first game is with Iran...
But I guess caring for females isn't fashionable these days...

Apparently because Beckham has made money by aligning with the LGB+ community.

I’m a bit conflicted - yes, it’s a hell of a strong statement but during a massive cost of living crisis when people are afraid to turn the heating on, it feels tone deaf.

Agree with all of this.

ItchySnoof · 20/11/2022 14:19

Imagine how much of a difference that money might have made to the woman who killed herself and her child over her electricity bill recently.

I bet there are hundreds of people out there contemplating the same right now. I get the point but what a fucking wanky way of making it.

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2022 14:19

This article in the Guardian says Beckham will be getting £150 from Qatar in total

www.theguardian.com/football/2022/nov/17/david-beckham-claims-qatar-world-cup-will-be-platform-for-progress-and-tolerance#:~:text=Beckham%2C%20who%20is%20reported%20to,is%20your%20day%20to%20dream%E2%80%9D.

That's why Beckham's being singled out

PrincessJanet · 20/11/2022 14:22

So are people more outraged at Lycett shredding £10k of his own money or Beckham being bought for millions?

(I find the conflict I feel over it absolutely fascinating).

OP posts:
Alacarde · 20/11/2022 14:22

If you shred £10,000 in notes, does that very fractionally increase the value of the money everyone else has in their pocket? I would be interested in an answer from someone knowledgeable about economics.

drivinmecrazy · 20/11/2022 14:22

If Joe had blown £10000 of his own money on a watch no one would give it another thought.
I for one think it's an extremely generous act to highlight the issue and found the video very moving.
There has been so much discussion on the issue but I'm not aware of too many 'celebrities' speaking out in relation to LGBTQ abuses in Qatar.
Good for him 🏳️‍🌈

Miss03852 · 20/11/2022 14:24

Yeah a bit of a stupid thing to do and upsetting to people struggling. I’ve seen non stop criticism of David Beckham over this so it’s not like it needs publicity drawn to it.

PrincessJanet · 20/11/2022 14:24

"Beckham, who is reported to be receiving £150m from the Qataris..."

Oh my god, you're right. £150 million.

OP posts:
AddieLoggins2 · 20/11/2022 14:26

It is £150 million (reportedly)

I think Joe Lycett's stunt is a good one, as you say OP why are people more bothered about Lycett and the £10k than Beckham and £150m? People seem to be getting angry about the wrong thing.

And yes it's a waste of money to shred it (if it was real money). But would people be saying that if Lycett, or any other celebrity, had bought a £10k watch or phone or any of the other things people spends thousands of pounds on? Or if he'd just let it sit in a bank? No-one would be moaning about how he could have given it to charity then.

Charlize43 · 20/11/2022 14:31

Probably a publicity stunt featuring fake money.

ChicCroissant · 20/11/2022 14:34

SisterGeorgeMichael · 20/11/2022 14:00

I used to think he was witty but he just seems like a bit of a twat nowadays.

This really - he's made a prat out of himself a few times lately, not sure what is behind it. I don't see him making a difference to anyone or anything apart from his own reputation (which could well be the aim, has he done anything positive for anyone?). Joe Lycett is all about Joe Lycett.

DragonflyNights · 20/11/2022 14:36

I’m pretty sure he’s winding people up - he’s getting the publicity with the countdown, now people being outraged he ‘shredded’ that amount of money - he’ll give it a few more hours and then do a big reveal that he shredded fake money.

ladygindiva · 20/11/2022 14:37

We've known the world cup was going to be held in Qatar for about six years. The decision making time would have been the time to protest surely.

Scottishskifun · 20/11/2022 14:38

If this was real money the I find it absolutely disgusting and so out of touch of what is happening around him.

He could have easily shredded fake money and gifted that amount to charities, foodbanks etc where it would have made a difference to charities who are struggling.

I don't think I will watch him again if he has done it. Protest is one thing but this is so out of touch!

DuchessDandelion · 20/11/2022 14:38

PrincessJanet · 20/11/2022 14:04

The point is, that it has to be shocking. Are you more concerned at Lycett shredding £10k of his own money OR Beckham validating Qatar on the world stage in returning for pocketing £150m to his already huge wealth.

What's more shocking?

I am not a Lycett fan, but I think that this is a very effective protest.

Completely agree

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 20/11/2022 14:38

The KLF set fire to that amount of cash in the 90s.

Publicity stunt really isn't it?

Georgeskitchen · 20/11/2022 14:40

What really needs to happen now is Beckham donates some or all of his huge fee to charity. He hardly needs the extra wonga and it would make JL look an even bigger twat than he already is.
Although I'm in the "fake money"
camp,I can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to do this

NC12345665 · 20/11/2022 14:42

What a knob. Has everyone forgot the cost of living crisis? Shredding money is fine and dandy now?

And you know he supports the "t" in LGBT? Why omit the letter?

vera99 · 20/11/2022 14:42

Back in the 90s KLF burned a million quid which was an extreme lot of money.3 am Eternal.
