He actually did it!

@BadlydoneHelen

I wonder if he has a tour coming up? £10,000 is cheap national publicity.

Good point. But I wouldn't go see him if he was performing live in my back garden. So him burning £10,000 is going to make shag all difference (to me,) and I would, guess that many others think/feel the same way.

I'm glad someone mentioned the KLF. That was a LOT of real money.

The fact that so many straight men are happy to make such a lot of money from a country where women (particularly lesbians) and gay men are treated so poorly (along with the poor workers) isn't a surprise.

They can all fuck off with their virtue signaling bollocks because it's clear when it's about women, poverty or gay rights, they'd take the money and STFU.

And I really liked Lineker. Beckham's always been a twat.

I can't STAND Linekar! Hmm Awful virtue-signalling wokie he is! He's just a hugely overpaid and famous MAN, who has been over-privileged since he was a teenager/in his early 20s! His type are often wokies!

Like a number of OTHER middle aged+ men, he left his wife for a younger model after many years of marriage. So that makes me dislike him even more! He is punching with every woman he gets with. They wouldn't look twice at him if he wasn't a footballer!

Miss03852 · 20/11/2022 16:43

Didn’t Linekar say he’d take in a refugee? What happened to that?

ThePoshUns · 20/11/2022 16:44

I would like to think it wasn't reall money that he shredded and that he quietly donated £10k to charity. Otherwise I'd have as little respect for him as I do DB

Beckham's argument is that he is doing it to help integrate Qatar with the rest of the world. The "be in it to change it" argument I guess. Fair enough, in which case he'll be publicly donating the £150m fee to LGB+ issues?

Or women's rescue centres???

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 20/11/2022 16:48

Really insensitive at the moment. Twat.

I read somewhere that he did take in a couple! Not sure about the details though

Alexandernevermind · 20/11/2022 16:50

The celebs don't burn money over women's rights over there, do they.

Upwiththelark76 · 20/11/2022 17:04

PrincessJanet · 20/11/2022 14:04

The point is, that it has to be shocking. Are you more concerned at Lycett shredding £10k of his own money OR Beckham validating Qatar on the world stage in returning for pocketing £150m to his already huge wealth.

What's more shocking?

I am not a Lycett fan, but I think that this is a very effective protest.

Agreed 💯

silverclock222 · 20/11/2022 17:06

Not that I actually knew who he was, this has totally turned me off him. If I ever hear his name again I'll just think of a stupid person who destroyed good money.

Nope!

I dislike such polarising rhetoric and disparaging terms such as "wokie" are unhelpful. I've just seen Linekar's BBC introduction to today's match on Twitter and thought it pretty good.

purpleme12 · 20/11/2022 17:11

I read this today! Is this actually true that he's shredded that money?!!

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2022 17:13

At least Gary Linekar has taken in refugees. Which is more than I've ever done.
Whatever you think of his views , his past history or his personality, he does tend to put his money where his mouth is ( as they say )
Rather than setting light to it, which is ridiculous

Alltheprettyseahorses · 20/11/2022 17:22

I'm torn. On one hand it's his money to do with as he wants - shred, burn, spend, whatever. On the other hand it's not as though David Beckham acts as if he's the morality police unlike some other commentators; Joe Lycett's stunt seems hypocritical because he's too cowardly to stand up to his woke mates who pretend they care. On the 3rd hand (will have to be a foot at this rate) as pps have said it's brilliant publicity for his upcoming tour, there's no way he could have got this much exposure for 5 times that money.

But he's done it publicly. That's not the same as shredding your own £10k in private because it's yours to do with as you want. It reminds me of that awful incident where wealthy young men were ripping up £20 notes in front of homeless people. There'll be people hearing about this for whom £10k could be life-changing.

I just came back on here to say the same. I'm impressed at the way he didn't shy away from addressing the fact that Qatar has issues. Never been he's greatest fan but he's not doing a bad job so far.

dementedma · 20/11/2022 17:31

What a twat. Hope it was fake and the real 10K given to charity.

It's not an either/or situation, though.

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2022 17:35

They addressed the issues with this World Cup in a measured way ; it wasn't hysterical and they all made some good points
Most people feel uncomfortable about it being here , but unless the tv companies and the sponsors had boycotted it , it would still be going ahead and at least hi lighting the issues might make people think a bit more or become more educated about how they operate.
None of it is easy though and I can see all sides of the arguments here, it is controversial.
They shouldn't have won that bid, but FIFA was even more corrupt back then and money talks.

BorgQueen · 20/11/2022 17:37

What a knob.

Why didn’t he go to his local foodbank and hand out £20’s ? Or give it to the families of workers who died building the stadium?
Attention seeking arsehole.
Beckham did the right thing in ignoring him, worst thing would have been to give a grovelling apology to a bully.
If Beckham wants to earn money that way, it’s between him and his conscience.

PizzaCarpet · 20/11/2022 17:38

@frazzledali can I not be shocked at both?

Or does that make me very, very stupid? Hmm

vera99 · 20/11/2022 17:52

He made a point and got 'free' advertising - lest we forget that Liz Truss and Kamikaze Kwarteng did the equivalent of 3 million 10k wads of cash in a single budget and we're all paying for that, not Joe!

Mumrey · 20/11/2022 17:53

Is Beckham still a 'big name' in the world of football to justify paying him £150m, he's had his time 🤷🏻‍♀️. Do football fans or anyone involved in that industry give a toss about him?
