Sky is looping at the moment, they had a guy on the ground. Seems to be chaos at present.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2016 07:53

yeah, Ive had a look. Pretty slow and chaotic evacuation - they were still in the building when I turned over.

It looks like several people have been killed.

All I can really think is perhaps they realised they wouldn't get past security and onto an aircraft so decided to set them off on the ground.

It's awful, but it would have been far more awful if they had brought down an aircraft...many more lives.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2016 07:55

ah, initially they were told to stay where they were. That makes sense.

The airport have said one dead, numerous injured. The Sky guy also said something about the explosion being right in the main entrance hall. I wonder if it was a premature explosion?

Sirzy · 22/03/2016 07:56

Scary stuff. According to itv there are 100s currently trapped

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2016 07:58

Agreed QE.
Absolutely awful though.

According to Belgian media up to 11 people have died.

Sirzy · 22/03/2016 07:59

Ex - apparently one of the explosions was near the American Airlines desk so I would guess that was the intended target for that one. The other perhaps one to take advantage of the chaos which will have occurred afterwards?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2016 08:00

Hopefully, once it settles they may revise the casualities downwards.

Poor people of Brussels, its been a horrid time for them since Paris.

This is the thing, though, there are clearly many more Islamist militants hanging around in the country. It's like they are laughing at us.

Assholes.

AgainstTheGlock · 22/03/2016 08:02

The AA desks are quite a distance from the other airline check-ins and have been since Sept 11th, so this looks to be deliberately targeting that airline.

2 cities I've lived in, 4 days - what is the world coming to? :(

exLtEveDallas · 22/03/2016 08:05

'Good' Terrorists (the ones that train) tend to use two explosions for max effect - one in area A and another a few minutes later in Area B that evacuees from Area A have to go through Sad. I think the chap saying two explosions close together is why I wondered if they'd gone off prematurely.

Bombs on evacuation routes are a special kind of evil.

My Ds is due to travel to Belgium on a school trip in a few days. We have a meeting about it at the school this evening. I'm hoping they cancel it tbh.

Those poor people.

bakeoffcake · 22/03/2016 08:13

i said to DH last night that I thought something awful was going to happen in the the run up the Easter. Easter bring one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Can you imagine how scared millions of travelled are going to be nowAngry

WannaBe · 22/03/2016 08:18

Just listening to five live ATM and the reporter there was saying that they've been on highest alert now since Paris and still this has happened. Sad.

WannaBe · 22/03/2016 08:24

Further reports now saying an additional explosion at a metro station as well. Sad

exLtEveDallas · 22/03/2016 08:29

Bloody hell. I'm very glad I'm not going away for Easter this year. People are going to be very, very scared now.

NapoleonsNose · 22/03/2016 08:38

If Brussels has been on the highest state of alert since the Paris attacks and this can still happen, how the hell do we stop it? Very alarming.

Sirzy · 22/03/2016 08:44

The problem is it's very hard to stop suicide bombers, by the time they get to that point they have been conditioned to think dying in the name

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2016 08:46

Metro has been shut down.

oh Brussels :(

Oops pressed post too soon -

They are conditioned to think dying in the name of their 'God' is a good thing and they will get their rewards for doing it. You can't stop that unfortunately. You may be able to make it harder to access some places but that's all you can do

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2016 08:47

dh travels to Brussels a lot for work.

David Cameron tweet that he is shocked and concerned - I don't think shocked is the right word, to be honest. Horrifying and appalling news but a long way from surprising. It's just what everyone's been waiting for really, isn't it.

My sister's flying today. To Netherlands not Belgium but it still makes me irrationally nervous.
