I am surprised at the bbc.

Reports on 5 live now that ten dead in metro explosion. Sad.

TBH though I think that talk of "the UK will be next" is unhelpful. Reality is that we have no idea who or what will be next and saying that it's bound to be us just increases panic at which point terrorists need do nothing.

RIP to all killed in this particular attack, but we cannot allow these situations to rule our lives.

Agreed Wannabe. Lets just focus what has happened today in Brussels. Its morbid scarmongering to worry whether it will be 'us' next. We are all so interconnected nowadays, does it actually matter where the next one may happen?

I'm off out for a bit. I hope that they can start to get people moving home soon. Reports on the other thread of kids being stuck at schools - their poor parents.

DH is in Brussels at present. Fortunately he went out yesterday, not today as originally planned (a bit like 9/11 when he went out a day early - so wasn't caught in the air).

The problem in Belgium is there is no "overall" security force, and everything is separated by language groups and areas.
Road blocks are pretty ineffectual as there are just so many routes across borders in Europe.

UK security is better because: its more joined up, and the Muslim community is reporting "suspicious behaviour" to the authorities.

I'm just hoping DH can get home for Easter.

I'm glad hes ok mummytime. Dh has told me two of his colleagues are over there, fortunately fine.

I hope he gets back soon.

f you were sat on that entirely in shock, injured, how would you feel if you then had a crowd of press pushing against the bus trying to get a photo of you? Well, DS is just about to go on a school trip there. I am in just the right mood to see exactly what these fuckers have done (again). I think the victims would agree.

Fourmummy - yes I kind of agree. Don't want to see anything too undignified though - not for my sensibilities, but for the victims and their relatives.

Mummytime - you must be very relieved DH is safe.

Don't want to see anything too undignified though Can being blown to bits ever be dignified? On the other hand, a complete news blackout would be the opposite of what the fuckers want, so I'd support that too.

Fourmummy, most of those people photographed would not have been in touch with their families first. Do you really think it appropriate for families to see their loved ones injured or dead on the news - before they even know what is going on? Can you imagine the terror of a parent (or indeed any other relative) seeing a partially covered body on screen - next to a backpack that could be the one they lovingly packed before waving them off on their hols?

I get that you are 'angry' right now, so unlikely to be persuaded otherwise, but please, think about it.

BBC saying AFP reports 21 dead now. God, it's awful. Hope your DH gets home ok mummytime. I am moved to tears just thinking about those who have lost loved ones.

Britain's policing and security does tend to be tighter. The higher crime levels in Britain and all those civil rights infringements really can protect us too. I remember being astonished on first going to the continent that they had bins on the railway platforms, as one example.

So, what do we do now? Accept it as inevitable? Fight back? Talk about it? Not talk about it?

Don't be ridiculous fourmummy, all we are saying is that close up graphic images of victims are not appropriate, especially at this moment.

What on earth does a photograph of a mutilated body bring in terms of understanding this event

ghoulishness dressed up as concern

I read a great deal about this and why its so fragmented after It came out about Molebeck being the home of Paris Attackers. So ironic to have these issues when its the home of the EU.
It seems they have major issues on their hands with intelligence, at an airport of all places.

So awful.

GobbolinoCat · 22/03/2016 12:24

ronically, we discussed the fact that we felt very safe at Istanbul airport last year because they were X-raying bags and scanning everything and everyone before they entered the airport, i dont understand why they all are t doing this??

I agree why not indeed.

There are rumours it may have been a bag just checked in at american airlines when it would have been subject to no checks yet.

I wasn't making a comment on any graphic photographs in my last post. In actual fact, I have not looked at any images at all, bar the front page ones, because I can't, but I know that they are there. I was speaking more widely about the implications of it all. Can we seriously take decades of this?

So sorry for all those affected by this.
Heart goes out to the families of the dead and injured.

I'm refusing to travel these days, I don't see it as letting the terrorists win but being savvy and realistic. It's home for us.

So, what are we going to do about this? Are we going to spend the next decade waiting for explosions in public places or are we, the people, going to do something? Our politicians obviously have zero interest in doing anything at all apart from lining their own pockets and talking crap while they are doing so. So, what do we do?
