Just in case people want to continue discussing this.

I am really angry with the Guardian Sonya.

LurcioAgain · 07/01/2016 20:21

Yes, those reports have been substantiated, Fidel1ne

BBC article Stuttgart and Hamburg. Not on the same scale, but very similar.

Tatiana44 · 07/01/2016 20:22

Luna Here is a breakdown of police's ID codes in UK. It is self-explanatory, so stop labouring the point. You cannot get away from the fact that the Cologne attackers fall under IC6.

Code Ethnicity
IC1 White - North European
IC2 White - South European
IC3 Black
IC4 Asian (in the UK Asian refers to people from the Indian subcontinent like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal)
IC5 Chinese, Japanese, or other South East Asian
IC6 Arabic or North African
IC9 Unknown

Thank you Lurcio, appreciated.

Washington Post Article mentioning attacks in Helsinki.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 07/01/2016 20:26

This [article above] is the one thing about the UK policy on refugees that I agree with. You don't take the refugees who can get here because by definition they will the fitter, the more able to travel etc. You take the migrants from the border. The women and children left behind, the old, the sick and the disabled not fit young men.

However on the subject of the attacks. They sounded very coordinated. So how were they coordinated?
And why? I don't think it is a simple as hatred of women. I think it is designed to provoke.

Pinkchampchoccies · 07/01/2016 20:26

"Helsinki deputy police chief Ilkka Koskimaki told AFP: "There hasn't been this kind of harassment on previous New Year's Eves or other occasions for that matter... This is a completely new phenomenon in Helsinki."

They don't want to admit this was a train station NYE terror attack and one they were warned about.

fidel1ne · 07/01/2016 20:29

Thanks Lurcio. I gave up on google when it kept throwing up DM. Nice to know BBC can be relied on while the broadsheets are in denial.

It seems to me that Germany needs to radically re-write its laws on rape and sexual assault and harassment. Increase and retrain its police force.

Europe wide there needs to be new rape laws regarding co-ordinated attacks like this. Minimum sentence of 20yrs for any perpetrator involved. The legal framework needs to come down like a ton of bricks on this kind of crap.

I've long said that rape should be treated like a hate crime.

Tatiana44 · 07/01/2016 20:32

Yes everyone, these were coordinated attacks. These men wanted to not just scare and upset the women, but they are full of rage at the the ease with which European women walk around unaccompanied or with a man who is not their husband, sharing affection. ME men call us "white meat".

QueenLaBeefah · 07/01/2016 20:32

Also very disappointed with the Guardian.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 07/01/2016 20:33

Agree it is a hate crime.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 07/01/2016 20:34

Tbf (to the reporting) even the first reports made it sound like they were coordinated. (I think that was r4).

So it is looking increasing like an act of terrorism. Presumably designed to increase racial tension and to make people turn against refugees (very much like the Paris attacks) and also possibly a judgement on perceived failings of mainstream European culture. Women in the streets and drinking etc.

That said there have been attacks including rapes at hogmanay street party in Edinburgh over the years. In a large crowd including lots of men, sadly it is inevitable that that crowd will contain a large number of rapists. (Number not proportion).

Is Cologne the NYE train station terror attack they were warned about then? I'm a bit confused.

polentapies · 07/01/2016 20:36

Ok, I'm not trying to be provocative here but this IS a possibility that it is a strategy: sexual assault on women is always a tactic of war. Since the dawn of time.

But I swear, and I apologise for the rhetoric, but OVER MY COLD DEAD FUCKING BODY

(yes apologies, paraphrasing Charlton Heston re NRA - a cause I hate.....!)

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 07/01/2016 20:36

There was a warning of suicide bombers at Munich station which was closed down.

LurcioAgain · 07/01/2016 20:36

Given that it does seem to be a coordinated attack covering several countries, you have to ask "Who benefits?" Clearly not genuine refugees, because this is like an extra Christmas present for the far right. I know there have been reports of ISIS members using the chaos and mass migration to move into Europe, and (okay... maybe I may be in danger of coming across a bit David Icke and the lizard men here) I do find myself wondering if these kind of flash mob attacks were orchestrated by ISIS agents provocateurs. Would be nice if a decent investigative journalist would get on the case, but from what I'm seeing from the likes of the Guardian, it looks like the days of serious investigative journalism are dead. (Maybe now the Washington Post have picked it up, we can hope for the reincarnation of Woodward and Bernstein).

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 07/01/2016 20:38

The legal framework needs to come down like a ton of bricks on this kind of crap.

Very much so.
At least they have identified some suspects.

LunaLodbrok · 07/01/2016 20:41

Smalllegs, there are children that have travelled alone from Afghanistan to Europe. Do you include them as 'fitter'? What about the many Syrian families that have travelled to Europe? The little girl my husband met blind in one eye from a bomb, is she fitter? People have travelled to Europe with all kinds of injuries, some with legs blown off. Sounds like a bollocks theory.

Tatiana, I am not denying that the attackers were of that ethnic origin. I am questioning the assumption that most men of similar appearance will do the same and the generalising on this thread, such as, 'ME men call us "white meat".

LunaLodbrok · 07/01/2016 20:43

Lurcio, it is weird. I am sceptical of Isis moving amongst the refugees, but this does look like orchestrated terror to me.

polentapies · 07/01/2016 20:46

Why are you calling out the small minority of comments that might not quite be PC Luna? This thread has been largely balanced. What is your agenda in trying to derail a respectful and intelligent discussion? Like many others, I am am (was) a 'Guardian reader' with all that entails.

Why not join in constructively to find a solution, rather than trying to discredit an entire thread?
