Here goes....

OP posts:

I'm sad that Caligula illustrates my point about poeple forgetting. Blair put Ruth Kelly, a known member of Opus Dei, the hardline Catholic stormtroopers into being education minister.
What did she do ?
She knowingly let a Catholic sex offender into a school under special dispensation, and wrote him a letter saying that he'd be a loss to the profession.
Oh yes, the Catholic school he was employed by knew as well.

Blandmum · 30/07/2006 17:07

interestingly saadia, some of them live in Jerusalem. I read about it in a travel book about israel/palestine. Can't remember the name of the book or the sect

DominiConnor · 30/07/2006 17:08

Saadia's right, but it's not quite a sect. The Orthodox view is that Jews should not return to Israel until the coming of the Messiah. That's one reason why when the British first offered a homeland many thought Uganda was a good option.

saadia · 30/07/2006 17:17

Well then the whole thing is even more of a farce than it originally appeared. I mean, Jews claim Israel as some kind of religious right and their own religion doesn't even grant them it.

Blandmum · 30/07/2006 17:22

I think that many jews would say that their religion does give it to them. This is a particular group of jews who argue to the contrary. Not saying they do or don't btw, just pointing out that there isn't consensus on the topic.

All religious have their differences of opinion, protestant and catholic, shia and sunni etc. Disagreement within the jewish tradition are long established

Caligula · 30/07/2006 17:23

DC I haven't forgotten the Ruth Kelly debacle. But that is not proof that Opus Dei is simply a paedophile cult. To say it is, is just the usual anti-catholic nonsense. I repeat, it's like describing the boy scout movement as a paedophile cult. It's not accurate.

Here is the BBC's take on it.

Are you talking about the Haredi Jews? Here's what wikipedia says about them. Haredi Jews

Blandmum · 30/07/2006 17:26

interesting link, caligula, and yes that was the group I was trying to remember.

saadia · 30/07/2006 17:35

that is fascinating Caligula.

SlightlyFamiliarPeachyClair · 30/07/2006 18:41

Opus Dei

Not a cult. Uber-Catholic yes, cult no.

donnie · 30/07/2006 21:57

well yes, Opus Dei is an ultra Catholic group - but it doesn't help if they are labelled - wrongly and prejudicially - a ' paedophile' organisation. That's a bit like saying all men are potential rapists, or that all Muslims are terrorists, an idea which is currently fuelling the very events this thread is about.

Get a grip DC and for God's sake see a bloody counsellor about your Catholic hang ups.

saadia · 30/07/2006 22:09

Just watching the news - cannot conceive how Blair sleeps at night. Talking about "sustainable ceasefire" while children are being killed daily.

WishICouldGiveUpWork · 30/07/2006 22:25

The BBC footage of the children's bodies being removed from a bombed building in Lebanon, literally made me feel sick.
Funny how "Condie"is keeping her ass safe in Jerusalem and has cancelled a visit to Lebanon.

I really do not understand how the West cannot be calling for a ceasefire??????????

Heathcliffscathy · 30/07/2006 22:27

because 'what would be the point?'

fewer children dying (even for a few days) condeleeza that's the fucking point.

Alipiggie · 30/07/2006 22:30

News flash - Israel suspending air strikes for 48 hrs - at least the lebanese may get some much needed aid in.

saadia · 30/07/2006 22:30

Apparently Israel has agreed to a temporary ceasefire of air attacks.

Bush and Blair obviously feel that Israel's objectives must take priority over the lives of innocent babies, children and other civilians.

According to the BBC it is mainly civilians who have died. They also reckon that support for Hezbollah has increased dramatically.

Alipiggie · 30/07/2006 22:31

Cannot the british not impeach Blair???? I would love to know what the UK/US underlying plan is for this de-stabilisation in the East

Alipiggie · 30/07/2006 22:31

meant to say impeach - not double negative

Heathcliffscathy · 30/07/2006 22:32

so what have the airstrikes thusfar actually achieved for israel apart from a propaganda victory for hizbollah and hundreds of civilian dead and their borders far far less secure as a result.

i want to call the israeli government a really offensive name. but i won't.

expatinscotland · 30/07/2006 22:32

'Cannot the british not impeach Blair????'

And then what? As if anyone else would act differently!

You do realise that quite a few people in the UK (Europe and the US and the entire West, for that matter) don't know or care where Israel is.

And they'll be voting, too.

WishICouldGiveUpWork · 30/07/2006 22:35

Call me cynical but isn't it funny how the temporary ceasefire just happens to co-incide with the bloody Rice woman planning a visit.....

Alipiggie · 30/07/2006 22:37

Hi Expat. You know it's a shame that some of the mums on here can't start a peace force. There are some incredible thoughts here. I hate sitting here watching this happen knowing that there's nothing I can do to stop it or even influence the decision makers. But it is about time that the US/UK government started listening to what maybe a minority is saying. But you're right I do think apathy rules sadly.

saadia · 30/07/2006 22:37

I actually have to leave the room when Condi or Bush appear. I can't bear to look at them.

expatinscotland · 30/07/2006 22:38

Are there any Jews on the board here?

I am curious. I went to a high school with a pretty big Jewish population, many of whom were Israelis, and their perspective could be quite different from much of what is expressed here, of course.

But then again, I've never been to Israel myself.

Heathcliffscathy · 30/07/2006 22:38

the israelis want to kill civilians. they want a 20 or so mile zone of the south lebanese border that is uninhabitable because it is too dangerous.

i think that tragically that is the agenda.
