Steak to the boil

Hi I posted a meal I made recently and thankfully most people backed me up and agreed it was normal, it helped settle a huge argument with my other half.

I just wanted to mention 1 more thing and see what people think. I've been buying these sirloins from a brazillian shop (not the same as sirloin steak in the uk)

Then I cook them in a pot / bring them to boil and my partner thinks it's wrong because you're meant to fry them.

I keep saying it's not sirloin steaks it's a brazillian sirloin which is completely different and I'm cooking it right.

Can anyone help explain to him he's wrong? I know it's small but it has caused a lot of arguments in the kitchen, and this site helped me a lot yesterday in finding the right name for the food I made.

Again this is not a sirloin steak in the uk, it's not steak... it's a brazillian sirloin so remember that. Thanks!!!

I don't know why I am on this thread. I haven't eaten meat in 26 years. However I am quite unwell and anxious about it and this thread is so bonkers and soothing it has a calming zen quality and is actually making me feel quite a bit better!

Oh @powerhousesandra please do share the recipes! I absolutely adore burnt steak and pasta but can’t ever seem to get it quite right. What’s the secret?

tt9 · 19/07/2023 14:50

@AlltheFs the secret is you have to boil the steak first, cover it in crisps and then burn it by throwing it directly into the fire

Best served by chucking in the bin

i will share more

Please don't, I think we've been treated to more than enough.

Hibiscrubbed · 19/07/2023 15:01

Please, for the love of god, stop BOILING steak. They probably said broiled.

So op, assuming this isn't a wind up, are you accepting of the huge consensus here that boiling is wrong and your H is right?

j1307 · 19/07/2023 13:41

You’re making Tafelspitz (which is exactly the same cut boiled in vegetable broth): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tafelspitz

Stop this blasphemy.

Tafelspitz is a bigger cut, and it's not boiled. It's simmered, "sieden" in German/Austrian, definitely not boiled.

The first one looks revolting and the second one is burnt?! I don't know what's going on but you need to stop cooking steak.

GingerIsBest · 19/07/2023 16:30

Honestly, your husband isn't much better at cooking steak....

MsMarch · 19/07/2023 16:31

Here is a picture of a sirloin steak joint, sliced, and served with a salsa verde that I made a while ago....

I think we are all going to have to accept that how you like meat cooked is very different to normal people. Over cooking, and boiling, a good sirloin steak is a travesty and I agree that your DH's versions aren't much better.

Each to their own though...!

That looks lovely, I reckon @powerhousesandra could improve on it with a bit of hot water and an oxo
cube though. It’s not quite grey enough.

Have you thought about tweeting your offerings to Gordon Ramsey @powerhousesandra? I hear he gives good feedback.

minipie · 19/07/2023 16:37

I bet you anything the restaurant in Brazil said Broiled not Boiled.

but if you prefer it boiled then you go ahead 🤷‍♀️

Dartmoorcheffy · 19/07/2023 16:38

I have 2 Brazilian sister in laws, I am a chef that cooks a lot of Brazilian food. No where ever in any part of Brazil has anyone boiled a steak. You can braise it, which is slow cooked in liquid at a low temperature, or you can broil it, which is the american word for grilling, or you can cook it on a griddle or in a frying pan.

Whataretheodds · 19/07/2023 16:40

Maddy70 · 19/07/2023 12:23

The Chinese boil meat in milk before frying as it breaks it down and makes it tender

Isn't that poaching? Quite different from boiling in water, either way+

diff cultures prepare diff food in diff ways, and different parts of the country too, u know brazil is bigger than europe, so parts do things differently

its all culture, cause its just not valid when its from a diff culture

I thought you were supposed to eat 'a rainbow'

OP your food looks very greige, however if that's how you like it, keep boiling!

“That’s a steak” is the new “cancel the cheque”
