Am I being over paranoid?

Tell me please if in the UK it is normal to send any parents who volunteer themselves to go to swimming sessions with 5-6 year olds to help in changing rooms and in the water with the kids?

OP posts:

'just because you think you are anonymous on here.'

Does that mean that you think you know who i am? Actually you can't because if you did, you'd know i would and have said the same to people when discussing similar face to face.

I think you're just making things up to suit yourself now.

ABatInBunkFive · 18/05/2010 14:06

backto - women abuse too, i think it's a crying shame that a man who wants to help out is labeled a paedo.

MollieO · 18/05/2010 14:08

Seems to me that you have a lot of other issues going on here. If 80% of your friends have really been abused then I can understand why you feel like you do. Maybe you should talk to your GP about your feelings. 80% is staggeringly high imo and I imagine if I was surrounded by friends who had experienced that I doubt I would be acting any differently to you.

seeker · 18/05/2010 14:10

You are being completely paranoid. And you are giving your children a sad and skewed view of the world. What a shame.

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:13

Yes, it's true women abuse. Do they abuse as much as men? I'm not labelling men paedos, I just think the risk is greater. I think statistics bear me out, notwithstanding recent cases. I don't care about it being a crying shame to be honest.

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:14

OP your concern is really very natural.

AhLaVache · 18/05/2010 14:15

On the face of it you are being paranoid and its a shame that your children will now miss out on swimming with their classmates because of that.

Presumably its not just this man present - other adults will be there, so so unlikely that anything would happen.

However I do think you're getting a rather harsh response from some. Most of us will have experience of just feeling creeped out by someone with no firm basis for it. I can think of a few people I have known who just strike me as slimy and untrustworthy - to then think that any of then would be helping my child get dressed/undressed/dried whatever would bother me massively.

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:17

Yes I'm right, most child sexual abuse is committed by men. Apparently studies have shown that 94 pc of sexual abuse against girls is by men.

scurryfunge · 18/05/2010 14:18

It doesn't make sense that all male swimming pool helpers are abusers though

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:19

I'm sure they're not, who says they are, but the risk is greater.

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:20

And it makes more sense than you think that some might be.

a. 94 pc etc

b. hmm how to gain access to naked young female bodies?

ABatInBunkFive · 18/05/2010 14:21

These ones are scurry though because op thinks one is weird and the school are in on it because they picked two men.

Pressumably there will be both girls and boys at the pool though, it is just as likely that one of the female helpers is an abuser. Thas is to say unlikely in the extreme.

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:22

It's not just as likely, women are less likely to abuse boys than men are.

scurryfunge · 18/05/2010 14:25

I believe scaremongering and throwing accusations around without evidence is dangerous. We are developing an attitude of fear amongst our children....abuse is more likely to happen within the family

ABatInBunkFive · 18/05/2010 14:25

If we are going with the logic of 'oh naked bodies' the chances of any volunteer being a paedo is high, clearly that's the only reason someone would want to help....oh wait OP offered herself.

seeker · 18/05/2010 14:27

OH, FFS! What are we doing to our children?

"No, dear, you can't go swimming. I know that's a shame, but Mummy doesn't like to look of one of the parents who's volunteered to help, and everyone knows that all slightly odd looking people are paedophiles, (and vice versa) so I'm not going to take the risk of letting you be in a public place with your teacher, the pool staff and all the other helpers because this man might be there and it's far too dangerous for you. Yes, the world is a scary place, people are dangerous and you are at constant risk. It's very important that you are suspicious of everyone you meet, because there is a strong possibility that you will be sexually abused, like 80% of the people I know, so trust nobody"

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:27

You just advised her to throw accusations around report it. How do you think she would "evidence her concerns"?

scurryfunge · 18/05/2010 14:28

Where's th OP gone? I want to hear the justification for paedos in speedos

scurryfunge · 18/05/2010 14:29

I told her to report if she has evidence and she clearly doesn't

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:30

Yes it's tough on the child, really tough. It shouldn't have to be this tough of course, and doesn't have to be this tough.

Being as how these concerns are taken seriously enough to ban phones and cameras in swimming pools, and being as how children are given stranger danger advice from a young age, I don't see anything wrong with schools saying sorry, we don't think you're paedophiles but we're just going to have to do without men in the changing room, though you can be at the poolside.

ABatInBunkFive · 18/05/2010 14:31

Are they only paedos if they are waering speedos, what if they are wearing generic trunks?

That's how we can check! Why did no one think of this before.

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:31

What evidence do you think would suffice? Just any example really would do.

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/05/2010 14:32

Gosh child sex abuse is so funny, and such an opportunity for showing how clever and ironic and sarcastic we are! Goodness. My sides are splitting.

ABatInBunkFive · 18/05/2010 14:35

No abuse is going on, oh except the abuse thrown at the poor guys who thought they were doing a good deed offering their time!

scurryfunge · 18/05/2010 14:36

Ask the OP, BTTAT, to evidence it - I asked her to thinking she wouldn't come up with the defintive answer....because her fears sound unreasonable

..glad it made you laugh.
