I was waiting for someone else to start it but had to take the plunge to tell you i just did my w5r3. I managed it but am hurting. Started off too quick and was wrecked 5 mins in but slowed it down - kept going and got to about 14 mins in when my ankles started really hurting - i kept on going anyway and was v relieved when raaawb said that was it - i then proceeed to hobble home - the bath is filling as i type and my ankles are painful but still that i did it.

On first bit of my run last night I did 10.44 min per mile and then 11.14 min/mile

canella · 26/05/2009 12:29

hi mummypoopins - i'm on week 1! did first run yesterday but got a wee bit lost - got a better route planned for tomorrow!

need dh to sort out the podcast - thats so much better than watching the clock! and the music is good for running! glad i found this thread!

theoriginalmummypoppins · 26/05/2009 12:48

good thinking turn round and come back half way through !!!

I will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

I cant run a bath at the moment. very unfit so it will be a challenge!

AitchTwoOh · 26/05/2009 13:06

vulgar re the breathing, do you remember me saying mine was awful and then clicked? what i did was (and i feel like an idiot for saying this) i put the tongue to the roof of my mouth when i wanted to breathe in through my nose, then didn't when i breathed out through my mouth. i think i just had to train myself to breathe through my nose without closing my mouth (too much effort when running, lol).

welcome to newbs, although remember we're all newbs by definition, i don't think anyone on here has been running for more than 6 weeks, have they?

i'm doing the bupa running programme because i cannot ABIDE rawb's music and did 7mins/2mins/7mins/2mins/8mins today while listening to r4's broadcasting house on my ipod. [ponce]

JackBauer · 26/05/2009 13:07

Managed wk3r1 today, 3 minute runs and everything!
I was pleasantly surprised that after the first 3 runs I felt like I could have kept going, and afterwards, for the first time,I was tired but didn't feel like lying down and passing out

AitchTwoOh · 26/05/2009 13:07

oh and boo to the injuries. BOOOO.

Dilettante · 26/05/2009 15:31

Aitch, technically I'm a newbie to C25K and this thread, but I used to run a lot, would run 45 mins min every day. But to all intents and purposes I reckon I count as a newbie since I haven't run for for 3 years due to injury and subsequent weight gain . I'm now fat and unfit!

Haven't been out for a few days as been ill, plus my foot is giving me a bit of pain so I'm a bit ginger. However, I guess I should get out tomorrow or I will fall behind again.

Well done everyone on progressing, great when you feel you could carry on beyond your time allotment isn't it?

Chinwag · 26/05/2009 16:59

Welcome Starapple. Which plan are you going to follow? I'm doing the Bupa one, cos every one elses is too hard for me!!!

Hope your ankle gets better soon Nappy, but well done on your run. REST it!!!

Resting is killing me; I want to be out there running!! SO frustrating!

HuffwardlyRudge · 26/05/2009 17:17

I wish someone would invent a digital watch or sth that you can programme to beep at varying intervals (2 mins then 90 secs then 3 mins etc) so you'd know to change pace when it bleeped.

I'm surprised one doesn't exist.

Before I found Raaaahbert I used to go out with my kitchen timer.

Dilettante · 26/05/2009 17:19

I have something called a Gymboss which isn't a watch but a little thing you can keep in your hand, pocket or clip on your waistband and it beeps or buzzes and you can set it at any intervals you like, it's pretty good, I have used mine lots. Was less than a tenner IIRC.

JackBauer · 26/05/2009 20:32

I have to admit I have been recording my own tunes and talking over them myself so I don't have to use a watch. I record it straight onto my phone and just listen back.

NorkyButNice · 27/05/2009 09:02

Fellow runners - I need a serious motivating kick up the rear end.

Haven't been out for a run since Saturday, and I have no injuries for an excuse...am just putting off starting week 6, even though I know it's going to be easier then w5r3 was.

Someone sort me out!

canella · 27/05/2009 09:22

come on norkybutnice i'll motivate you!!! GET OUT THE HOUSE!!!!!!!
you'll feel so much better for it and think of the weight loss or the extra food you could eat as a treat for going running!!

i went out this morning even with sore legs - i'm only on w1r2 though so you'd be doing an amazing job doing week 6!!

i'll check back in late to see if you went out - why not go out first thing then its out of the way?

potatofactory · 27/05/2009 09:24

How weird! I just downloaded the plan yesterday for the first time. I have new running shoes

Will be doing my first run later today (or perhaps tomorrow if this drizzle really doesn't stop...)

canella · 27/05/2009 09:36

potatofactory - hope you get on ok - i'm an absolute newbie too but even i can manage it! have you got a route planned? have you got rahhbert downloadedon to your ipod - it made such a difference today - the music is really motivational!

potatofactory · 27/05/2009 09:45

Hello canella what is this rahhbert? I'll look at earlier links. I'm clearly missing something here... I don't have a route planned, but I have a very local park which is about a kilometre round, and will time the intervals, then whenever I stop I'll only be two minutes from home.

NorkyButNice · 27/05/2009 10:27

Thanks for the attempt canella!

It's raining now so I've actually got an excuse - I'm going to go later though as my Mum is babysitting DS tonight so I'll have some me time (run, then a long soak in the bath I think!).

Good luck to everyone else who's running!

SVioletcanrunfor20minutes · 27/05/2009 10:42

wel, the GP has banned me for running for a fortnight to see if my knee settles down (has suggested that perhaps running isn't for me and I should try cycling instead). If it does stop hurting, then fine; if not he'll refer me to an orthopaedic surgeon .
Norky - do not give up now!

annaje · 27/05/2009 11:31

I've been meaning to start this for a while now so really pleased to find your thread. Do you need the pod cast or do you judge the timing yourselves?

NorkyButNice · 27/05/2009 12:02

Oh no Violet - have you got a prior injury on your knee? I hope some rest sorts it out - surely you would see a physio before a surgeon?

I decided to stop being a wuss and dragged myself out into the drizzle to do w6r1 - so it's done and dusted. Am pleased to have done it and it is getting easier (she admits begrudgingly!).

SVioletcanrunfor20minutes · 27/05/2009 12:46

it's not a prior injury, it's caused by having horrid useless feet (bunions, ankles which roll in) so there's a twisty motion on the knee joint as it moves. Physio is unlikely to do much to help as it's not a knee problem as such, but once it's been assessed by an othopaedic person, then they'll be able to advise what's best

In the meantime, I'll be the official couch to 5k cheerleader

canella · 27/05/2009 12:52

well done norky - you knew you'd feel better when its done and you can enjoy the peace then when your mum is babysitting!

annaje - i tried on monday timing it myself and found it a PITA but today with the podcast it was so much easier and that made the running seem easier

Violet - i'm a physio (although not that kind) and they could definitely offer to help you or maybe have you referred to podiatrist to sort out your feet! will ask some of my physio friends for advice and get back to you!

Nappyzoneisabeetrootrunner · 27/05/2009 15:05

Ankle feels teeny bit better better today but ankle bone still hurts to touch - should i risk a little jog to ease back in or would that be mad? i am really twitchy watching you guys spurt on! I did debate a gp visit but worried he will rule me out.....

OP posts:
HuffwardlyRudge · 27/05/2009 19:29

Sorry about your ankle Nappy. Bummer.

I've just done w3 r2. I'm really not enjoying week 3. Weeks one and two got me twice around the lake, but week 3 only takes me one and a half times round. I'm not finding it as challenging. Looking forward to week 4.

Potato - Rahhbert is Robert Ullrey who is a chap who has made podcasts to pop on your ipod. You just press play and he does all the timings for you, telling you when to run and when to walk, giving you encouragement, and playing appaling music, as if you're not suffering enough .

Chinwag · 27/05/2009 19:51

Vulgar, did you get the book??

I've been out tonight for the first time in about a week. I ran for 15 mins, but then not so good after that. Hip hurt a bit, and I was TIRED!!!! But, at least I did something!! Better next time, I hope. I want to do 18 mins walk 2, then 18 mins, which is the 1st week in Bupa 10K plan.
