I'm in absolutely no way qualified to start this thread but I couldn't see another one!

So after nearly 2 weeks of not running with plantar fasciitis issues, I've just done W6R1! I thought I'd go back a bit a build up gradually but it was actually ok considering I haven't run in so long. I haven't lost it completely as actually felt a bit like a runner! 🥳 We'll see how my heels are later today...

And I got back home just before the hail hit!

Hope anybody else running this morning is enjoying the crazy weather!

I lost this thread.
I'm still running. a nice 10k this morning partially on the beach just as the sun came up.
was magical.
my hip is bothering me though, need to get in touch again with my physio.

emilyjeff · 01/11/2021 17:53

Ah that sounds amazing @purplesequins
I'm still here, still running, if not very regularly. Looked back at oct today on garmin connect and I ran 7 times over the month so not great but not too awful either. I've signed up for one of the garmin challenges, to run 50 miles in November, should be do able if I go out 3x a week. I do think I have less motivation now it's colder and darker, I'm not a fan of winter 😒 Anyway, planning to do Weds, Fri and Sun this week so will see how it goes

purplesequins · 01/11/2021 18:56

yes, and now that the clovks went back my midweek evening run will be in the dark.
sportspark - here I come

purplesequins · 03/11/2021 18:47

was able to see a physio for my hip today.
looks loke it's 'just' stiffness and weakness following an injury some time ago.

deep tissue massage ouch ouch ouch

redmapleleaves1 · 06/11/2021 16:52

Hi all, hope it is ok to join you.

I'm about to restart C25K, having fallen off it during week 4 in Lockdown. My work is doing a walking challenge during November, and I thought this would be a good kickstart. And a parkrun has just started in my local park. I've just realised I need new earphones for my phone (now ordered) so it won't be immediate, but I've registered for parkrun, and joining in with you is my next motivator. Really want to keep going this time.

Do any of you volunteer with parkrun? i wondered if that would be a better way to keep me going by it becoming a friendship thing too. At the moment I feel too slow to join a running group, I'd rather build my stamina up first.

Cavagirl · 07/11/2021 11:23

Hello red!

Just come back from a lovely 5k in the sunshine!

I don't volunteer with parkrun but I think that's a great idea to build yourself up to joining a running group.

EsmeraldaFudge · 07/11/2021 11:33

Can I join? Very lapsed runner here. I'm on week 2 day 1 after a running hiatus!

I did c25k about 12 years ago and ran quite frequently including two half marathons.

Lapsed last year as completely lost my motivation ( on reflection I was burnt out from working through covid in nhs).

I've signed up for half marathon next may to ensure I don't lose my motivation again. It's amazing how easy is it to lose that running fitness.

I really need to follow the c25k programme as the thought of just bombing out through the front door now seems impossible

purplesequins · 07/11/2021 11:49

welcome red and esmeralda

I don't do park run. it's way too early for me on a weekend. plus the route of my local one is not very nice.

anyway, I on a little break from running as prescribed by my physio. off to a bike ride soon as the weather is nice, if a bit windy.

emilyjeff · 07/11/2021 12:33

Hi everyone and welcome newbies 😊
I am pleased to report I'm getting my running mojo back! Did 15 min weds, 20 mins Fri and 25 mins this morning. Decided to go for time rather than distance while I get back into it. So plan for next week is 20/ 25/ 30 mins. Hoping the 30 mins will take me close to 5k. Then I might sign up to another garmin plan
Great idea about volunteering for parkrun @red you'll get to meet people and find out how it all works. I occasionally do parkrun, the ones close to me are not great, very busy and paths are narrow in places, plus I like running alone! I do like a bit of parkrun tourism tho if we're away for a weekend or on holiday

ExConstance · 08/11/2021 09:48

I'm revisiting the thread after a few months, I stopped posting once I got to 5k. I'm finding running harder now it is cold and wet and dark for a lot of the time I'm not at work. I think my usual run is now just over 5k but i'm only getting out twice a week now. I don't mind running in the dark, as I've got a head torch and a flashing waistcoat thing but if it is wet that puts me right off. I've never done a Park Run but wonder if putting a bit of discipline in place with having it as a fixture might help.

TheWeeDonkey · 10/11/2021 08:16

Hiya, hope I can join in. I've got to week 7!🎉 after 5 years of starting and giving up. I've really been enjoying running outside, there are some lovely nature paths near me and its been a great stress reliever, but I'm nervous about running in the dark. I tried running on the treadmill at the gym on Monday and it was not half as satisfying and I found the loud music etc really distracting.

Does anyone have any tips for keeping up the good work in winter months?

purplesequins · 10/11/2021 08:25

well done donkey

Does anyone have any tips for keeping up the good work in winter months?

go out anyway.
my midweek evening run I do in a sports park that has a lit 1k loop.
weekends I go out on my 'nice' routes. I have a couple 5-6k routes and a few longer ones (up to 10k). one is very popular with dog walkers, I only run there when it rains.

Cavagirl · 10/11/2021 10:04

Welcome donkey!
I second go out anyway. Experiment with kit, and plan your runs around the weather when you can! I actually far prefer being out in winter then summer (when I tend to model a beetroot after!)

emilyjeff · 10/11/2021 10:08

Morning ladies, feeling proud of myself as I'm full of cold (again 😒) but forced myself out to do my planned 20 mins and didn't feel too bad.
@TheWeeDonkey I totally agree treadmill running is awful! I avoid it if at all possible. I'm trying to stick with my early morning running before work, if its still a bit dark then I just go with it, still plenty of people around so feels safe. Then as @purple said I try and do my longer runs at the weekend.

TheWeeDonkey · 10/11/2021 13:10

Thanks for the tips and encouragement. Actually there is a running track not too far from me its a bit up hill and down dale here but I can probably plan a safe main road route too. I was just really surprised at how unmotivated I found treadmill running compared to running in the park.

purplesequins · 10/11/2021 13:16

I find running on a treadmill (or stationary bike) incredibly boring.
the running group I sometimes go to uses an athletes track - that's also something I wouldn't want to do for every run.

I like to feel the different surfaces under my feet. the hills (to a limit!), the change in air when you run into the wood or along the sea.

TheWeeDonkey · 10/11/2021 17:31

I agree although I don't live anywhere near the sea (how lovely to run by the sea). I love how my normal route constantly changes. I managed to get out after work tonight and really enjoyed it, much more so than at the gym so I think a little forward planning is the way to go.

emilyjeff · 10/11/2021 18:20

Yes I think when you're running outside the view changes constantly whereas treadmill running is just monotonous. Longest I've ever run on one was 5k and it seemed to take forever.
I did use a cross trainer type thing at DHs gym before tho where there was a screen built in and you could choose like a national park or whatever to hike thru and the view changed as you went along, was pretty good but still nothing beats being outside!

TheWeeDonkey · 14/11/2021 10:46

Just finished week 7 and done 4.5 k! Knackered but chuffed. It's a lovely day for a run, how is everyone today?

purplesequins · 14/11/2021 11:45

well done 'donkey'

I did a slow 5k on a flat route. my hip did not squeak, so that's good Smile

we are back to working from home, I might be able to go to the next running group session. depending on what my physio says. and what the theme of the session will be...

TheWeeDonkey · 14/11/2021 18:46

Thanks Purple your hip not squeaking is great. Smile god luck with your hext running session

emilyjeff · 14/11/2021 20:14

Hi, all good here. Only managed 2 runs so did the 20 and 25 mins. This weekend has been so busy I've not had time to run. Hoping I might get out tomo afternoon tho and do my 30 mins

purplesequins · 19/11/2021 19:37

went for another run today. sports park, do rather boring. tried to put into practice what my physio recommended.
she said I should try to lift my legs higher, like stepping over a broom handle with each step. she also recommended the skipping rope to encourage getting the knees higher.

I really rate physio therapists. they really are the best when it comes to squeaky joints and muscles!

EsmeraldaFudge · 21/11/2021 11:20

Just about to go out for week 4 day 1. All going well so far

ghostmouse · 21/11/2021 16:10

Can I join?
I’ve just started week 1 today, this is my third attempt at couch25k and I haven’t got further than week 3 due to Various reasons.

Any ideas on shoes, my very old karrimor runs have been discontinued and they seemed to be the only ones that were supportive arched and tight fitting to my feet, I have narrow feets with a bunion on my right foot .
