Third year for me aiming to be as active as possible most days. So join me in setting a goal and keeping on track by logging on here Smile. I’ve set a 500mile run target this year to be realistic as I’ve nursed foot issues most of 2021 which really curtailed my running miles but sea swimming and trail running have developed into my passions. What’s your challenge this year?

Oh wow yes that does sound very doable for you then @LaLaLanded! I think 1000km should be doable for me as long as I don’t fall off the running wagon😳 I didn’t run yesterday but am hoping to do a long run this weekend.

TriSeaSwim2021 · 16/01/2021 14:03

Ran 5k early Friday with a sunrise SeaSwim after was fab. Quick spin out on the bike at lunchtime today. Once I get my virtual HM done in mid-Feb I need to switch to cycling more as I have 100km charity ride lined up which is hilly and tough as I last did it 5yrs ago. Plus a May Tri as the entry was carried over from last year. Crap I just realised I’ve got a mix of Tri/Run/Cycle events booked in Feb/Mar/Apr/May/June & Sept... I’d forgotten some rolled over from last year and I booked a couple more in 🙈nearly all are charity linked though. Hoping I can manage the niggles but cold sea swimming appears to be doing wonders for reducing inflammation.

You can do it run1000km2021 it just takes consistency. I ran 1000km in 2019, but struggled with injuries last year and tbh I enjoy the variety of run/swim/cycle depending on how my peri-menopausal body is feeling these days.

@TriSeaSwim2021 what do you swim in? I would like to get back into sea swimming but the price of wetsuits and dry robes is really prohibitive.

FrangipaniBlue · 16/01/2021 15:45

I am seriously impressed that you are managing to swim 1km @TriSeaSwim2021 in current temperatures!!

I'm only managing 5-600m at a time (twice a week), mind my swim pace is slow so I guess if I was faster I could do 1km in the same time in the water Grin

FrangipaniBlue · 16/01/2021 15:47

I think this thread is about mutual encouragement of everyone's individual challenges, not competitive

Spot on @ErrolTheDragon !! I was conscious when I posted at the start about how far I wanted to do that I may have come across as showing off, that wasn't intentional. I like posting on this thread because it makes me accountable to hit my personal goal Smile

FrangipaniBlue · 16/01/2021 15:50

Those asking about tallying your walks in Strava, it classifies them under "other" in the statistics so if the only "other" activity you use it for is walking (ie not cross trainer or yoga etc) then your "other" total is your walking distance Smile

FrangipaniBlue · 16/01/2021 15:56

Have a look for a second hand wetsuits @drspouse loads of people sell them this time of year and wetsuit hire places sell off last years Ex-hires!

You could also look at hiring one? They are usually something like £80 for the season and you get a brand new one, with an option to pay a nominal fee at the end to keep it !!

I have a dry robe but actually I find in more cumbersome at the minute trying to get dry and dressed fast in the cold air - I've switched to a towel and a onesie but I wrap my onesie round a hot water bottle in my bag! Game changer!

Ooh I do fancy a onesie with a hot water bottle!
I wish we could swim in the quarry but it's shut, not a fan of sand all over me.
14k bike ride today.

Run1000km2021 · 16/01/2021 18:20

Wow I’m very impressed with the sea swimming!!! I do like to dip even in winter but I definitely couldn’t manage any distance at all! It must feel lovely and so freeing!

Inniu · 16/01/2021 18:46

I sea swim a bit but in a swimsuit, gloves and socks
I haven’t been since the week after Christmas because of our lockdown restrictions,

@FrangipaniBlue do you have a recommendation for renting a wetsuit? The one that's not too far from me only rents for the summer.

TriSeaSwim2021 · 16/01/2021 22:06

I’m not swimming far at all in these temps that’s my running total 🤣but I have been in 2-3x a week so it’s little and often. Normally only 10mins at the moment. I’ve got a small selection of swim gear I’ve acquired in last 6mths. A proper swim wetsuit but it’s buoyancy forces me into head down front crawl so I’ve actually not used it much recently as it’s too cold to do much head in stuff. I’ve loved my £20 Tesco shortie wetsuit for ease of use, I can do breaststroke head out in it without hurting my back& shove it in the washing machine after. Most swims though have been just in costume with a thin jacket I got off decathlon for £15 last month. Plus more importantly are gloves, booties and hat all bought cheaply in October. I don’t own a dry robe as I don’t need it. I just use a quick dry towel poncho and put layers on quicker than my fellow dry robe folk Grin so if you want to try it the safest way is 1min for every ‘c of water temp if you are in a costume and not used to it. That’s 8-9mins at the moment in south England.

drspouse · 16/01/2021 22:14

It's about 7 here! I do have an Aldi cheapo wetsuit and I was worried about not actually being able to move/swim.

TriSeaSwim2021 · 16/01/2021 22:17

drspouse it’s less about hardcore swimming this time of year and far more about cold water immersion and mental health as it’s such a buzz. It’s been good for my joint inflammation. Ditch the wetsuit get some boots & gloves and have a go if you want to try it. Smile

Onwardsandupwardswego · 17/01/2021 07:02

Now up to 75 miles walked and off for a big dog walk today and hopefully it won't rain. Bit fed up of the dog and I getting soaked 💧💧💧☔

officelady · 17/01/2021 11:04

Just checking in .... and I am delighted to report that as part of my work COVID risk assessment, I get every other afternoon working from home. This means I can fit a run in at lunchtime and have a quick shower before getting on my laptop. It’s one positive thing to come out of lockdown!

I was up early today so managed to catch the sunrise on my run. Such a great mood lifter after all the gloomy rainy days we have had recently.

Oh man what a weekend!!! I ran my fastest 5km and fastest mile yesterday, and my fastest 10km and fastest half marathon today! I feel happy!

5km yesterday plus 21.1 today puts me at 84.2km!

drspouse · 17/01/2021 13:29

7.5k walk with the DCs.
All tired except, apparently, DD who wants to go to the park Hmm

LaLaLanded · 17/01/2021 14:59

Congratulations @Run1000km2021 what a weekend - well done!

Intrigued and impressed by all you cold water swimmers. I don’t know if I could do it - I can see how it would be very exhilarating though and feel quite purifying.

10km run on the treadmill for me yesterday, and 21km run outside today. Beautiful day for it, but quite a few people to dodge as a result. I got lost a few times (in central London Grin) which was interesting. Taking the rest of the day easy now.

This week I have managed 14km cycling and 23km running. So glad the weather has warmed up here fractionally as I'm absolutely useless when it's really cold.

TriSeaSwim2021 · 17/01/2021 15:28

Whoohoo Run1000km2021 that’s fab when you get a series if runs like that.

I had a ploddy 8m today was no where near as bouncy relaxed run as last Sunday’s long run but it was good to get out early.

@officelady lovely view! I am in awe of all you cold water swimmers, and early runners. I just can't seem to get to and out at this time of year, use letting the day warm up as an excuse. Many local runners post Beautiful early morning pics, and obvs it's much quieter out and about than my peak time runs. I'm also running with the DC a lot (my youngest runs with a club in usually) and there's no way in the world they'd get out early!
Rubbish week for me, did too much at home cardio so legs dead for running. 16.9 miles this week.

@drspouse I've not personally used them but I know people who have used Tri UK, I've just looked on the website and can't see anything that says it only starts from the season!

www.triuk.com/wetsuit-hire

This one also came up when I googled and they do shorter periods too

Ah that makes sense @TriSeaSwim2021 it's pretty much what I've been doing!

I've envious that your water temp is 8/9 and @drspouse is 7...... it was big fat 0 in my local lake on Friday, my tow float had a layer of ice on it 😳

It's the first winter I've carried on swimming and I must say, there is a noticeable difference in the cellulite on my thighs and butt!!!!!
