Third year for me aiming to be as active as possible most days. So join me in setting a goal and keeping on track by logging on here Smile. I’ve set a 500mile run target this year to be realistic as I’ve nursed foot issues most of 2021 which really curtailed my running miles but sea swimming and trail running have developed into my passions. What’s your challenge this year?

Hi , I'm in.
I have name changed since I last posted on the previous thread, I did 1015K walking in 2020, so achieved my target of 1000K. I am going for 1250k this year.
I've joined the Strava walking challenge of 100K this month, but it is so muddy round here at the moment , it is difficult to find routes to take. DS and I managed 9K yesterday but there were a few mud slides! Some of my December walks consisted of walking to a flood and back.
I contacted the Parish footpaths officer about some blocked footpaths and will be going on a few "checking the paths" walks with him when things settle down a bit, so hopefully I might find a few new routes.
Can anyone recommend decent walking boots for narrow feet? The ones I had deteriorated really quickly and I got a refund but need to replace them....

Hi, I’m in. Have decided I would like to do 1000km this year in a combination of running and walking. I am only counting actual walks/runs rather than meanders with DC.

I had been quite active but have fallen off the wagon due to family illness, pregnancy and lockdown. Determined to be able to carry on keeping up with my scarily fast toddler.

6km yesterday and another 5.8km this morning walking with a friend is giving us both a chance to have a fast walk but also a mental health saving natter with someone other than our partner or a 2yr old..... 11.8/1000

Inniu · 02/01/2021 13:06

I decided to start as I mean to go on and celebrated my birthday with a 10K run this morning. Haven’t done 10K in ages so was a bit surprised when I realised it was only 60minutes and 50 seconds.

Walk 6.5k
Run 10/990

ErrolTheDragon · 02/01/2021 13:56

Happy birthday and well done, Innui!

We went out in brilliant sun but icy paths so not fast. And then didn't go as far as we'd intended because it started to snow - proper big soft flakes, which was rather lonely. It's not really settled though.

7km.

LaLaLanded · 02/01/2021 15:21

Happy birthday @Inniu and well done!

5km slow run with DS today - he was on his bike.

Then 10km run on my own - pleased as it’s my fastest outdoor 10, at 46.29. My left hip flexor has been dodgy so I wasn’t expecting anything remotely quick. Felt good though!

Recommendation for any runners: The Lost Art of Running by Shane Benzie and Tim Major. Has some brilliant insights and advice on form. I’ve been practicing since Christmas and think the advice in it was a large part of my time today.

Have decided to amend my yearly goal to 2,021 km. I should exceed it, but also I can’t be bothered to convert into miles.

2 mile dog walk takes me to 990

Peanutbutterblood · 02/01/2021 19:18

I'm feeling out of my depth already. I realised today that for 1000km in 2021 I'd need to hit 83km a month (plus 4km) and suddenly I'm panicking theres no way I'll manage it. I ran 5km yesterday and walked 4km today so happy with my start. I'd love to run tomorrow but the snow and ice probably mean I would be able to. I wish they'd grit my rural roads

ErrolTheDragon · 02/01/2021 19:32

The icy walk was mostly done too gingerly to count as exercise, so I've done 4km on the rower as well. I want to try to close the rings on my watch - I did quite well for most of the first half of last year but then for various reasons it went to pot a bit.
7km walk
4km row
11km total

TriSeaSwim2021 · 02/01/2021 20:00

Happy birthday innui and thanks for the book tip lala I’ll check that out.

A lovely sunrise 5k this morning plus sea swim dip after (there was still frost on the sand..tad chilly but fab). Long 2hr walk NYday but I don’t count my walk miles on here.

Running 5k
Swimming 0.3km

Colinthedaxi · 02/01/2021 21:38

I did 1719 miles in 2020 so aiming for 2000 miles in 2021. Barely twitched on NYD and did five miles today, will need to ramp it up!

FrangipaniBlue · 02/01/2021 22:02

I managed a total of 6,072km (3,772 miles) in 2020 so I'm going to aim for 5,000 miles this year...... however currently waiting Covid test results do there may be a delayed start!!!

ErrolTheDragon · 02/01/2021 23:37

Wow...that's massive. Are you actually a sheepdog or suchlike, Frangipani?Grin

Haha no @ErrolTheDragon but I do triathlon so lots of swim/cycle/run plus I have a dog so add in walking Grin

JacktomyDaniel · 02/01/2021 23:48

I'm so sorry for how stupid this sounds but here goes...
I'm fat. I'd love to set a target to walk x amount of miles a day.
How do you know where to go? Like in advance. How can I plan a route leaving my house that is say 3 miles and comes back? I'm rubbish with maps and I don't know my area well. I know if I just set off and walk I'll cut it short or have to double back and get bored.
Sorry maybe that's stupid question of the year (in January 🙈)

Peanutbutterblood · 03/01/2021 07:10

@jacktomyDaniel there are route planner apps you can use to mark them out or download strava and watch as you walk 1.5miles and dont turn around until you do

You could also try to have the mindset of, I want to do 3miles but wont come home I've done atleast that. So your always slightly over target then under.

If you dont know your area you could actually have lots of fun finding routes

GwendolineWindowlene · 03/01/2021 07:18

Is there a simple app that will keep a total as you go? I have RunKeeper which has a walking setting and automatically pauses if you stop, so that’s great, but it doesn’t keep an overall total. Unless I’m using it wrong. Same with Apple Health, that only seems to give a daily average.

GwendolineWindowlene · 03/01/2021 07:19

Oh lord, ignore me, I’ve just this second found that RunKeeper does exactly what I’m on about. BlushGrin

Stellashere · 03/01/2021 07:19

Hi please can I join? I’ll be mostly walking, with the odd cycle ride thrown in. I had a lovely 10 km walk with my mum in frost yesterday morning-beautiful but perishing!

990/1000

Run1000km2021 · 03/01/2021 07:24

Hey guys, So I may as well admit right at the start of this thread that I’m a really really sad person who loves a shiny medal😂😂😂 I usually sign up for the RaceAtYourPace ones but I’d love to sign for for a yearly challenge as well. I googled but there doesn’t seem to be much out there, which seems strange as lots of people do 1000 km or mile challenges... Anyone know of such a thing?

🏅 🏅🏅🤓😳

TriSeaSwim2021 · 03/01/2021 07:43

You can get medals for that distance run1000km I’ve had one in the past. They may not be ready to launch yet?? I got one for running but in order to have it ready I just screen shotted from Strava my cycle total so that it was posted out to me in early December ready for when I actually finished running it in late Dec. I can’t remember where I got it from but I’ll dig it out later and take a photo.

It baffles me that apple doesn't seem to do totals, just averages. Its one of the reasons I was on the thread last year, to keep my tally there!
drspouse · 03/01/2021 08:58

Do you have to start Runkeeper when you start a run/walk? I always forget whether it's a walk for exercise or into town but that's all I do at the moment.

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 03/01/2021 09:17

I'm in. Will aim for combined 1000km. Approx 700 running and 300 cycling. Better get off my arse and get started really!

GwendolineWindowlene · 03/01/2021 09:27

Yes, you do have to start it, but it pauses and restarts automatically if you stop temporarily.
