Third year for me aiming to be as active as possible most days. So join me in setting a goal and keeping on track by logging on here Smile. I’ve set a 500mile run target this year to be realistic as I’ve nursed foot issues most of 2021 which really curtailed my running miles but sea swimming and trail running have developed into my passions. What’s your challenge this year?

Hi everyone, loving the bike chat! Mine has been collecting dust a bit after getting all excited about it - my knee has been giving me loads of trouble so have been spending time properly doing strength work so I can run properly.

A couple of lower mileage running weeks, recently because of the knee, mostly on the home treadmill, plus a ton of glute work and... the gym opened today! Very exciting. I got on my “usual” treadmill (which is much better than thr home treadmill) and did 10km feeling very controlled and strong, building negative splits, and completed in just under 46 minutes. Treadmills runs don’t really “count” timewise as it’s an artificial environment but after 2 weeks of knee pain it was great to feel strong.

Ended the gym session with some decent leg presses for the glutes. Mustn’t get lazy again!

@Run1000km2021 that truly is an epic day. Some sort of mini triathlon! 👍🏽👍🏽

Run1000km2021 · 13/04/2021 08:05

Thanks @LaLaLanded! My next fitness goal is actually to do a triathlon so with pools open again I’m hoping to start swimming more!

I have a tri suit now, I wonder if you’re allowed to run to the pool in it and then swim in it or whether that is considered rank as the showers are currently not working... probably the latter...

Run1000km2021 · 13/04/2021 08:06

@LaLaLanded that’s an amazing time for 10k on the treadmill😱😱😱🤩🤩🤩

drspouse · 13/04/2021 09:08

Still struggling with this cold - may go for a light stroll at lunchtime instead of bike.

tizwozliz · 13/04/2021 09:29

3km swim this morning. Need to get my swimming k's in as can barely walk at the moment. Seeing the physio this afternoon

Running/Walking 202km
Swimming 5.9km

SSwimCycle21 · 13/04/2021 10:39

Cycled down early for what has to be my coldest swim so far it was flat calm blue sky but so so cold. Definitely worse than many a grey Dec/Jan swim. Beautiful morning though to get it in before work.

Swimming 12.3km

Run1000km2021 · 13/04/2021 15:27

Loving all the swimming posts😊

Another 20km on the bike for me. I’m getting more used to it but I find my lower back hurts a bit. The bike is the right size so I guess it must be my posture. It’s annoying though.

tizwozliz · 13/04/2021 17:54

@drspouse physio has prescribed me side planks too. Strangely my issue with my hip has apparently come from walking rather than running. Glutes are working when running but not when walking Hmm

Swimming should help though so that's good.

SSwimCycle21 · 13/04/2021 17:58

run1000km try adjusting the handle bar stem up or down (the pole in the middle of the handlebars) . I have mine set higher to avoid lower back issues. Worth a try.

tizwozliz · 13/04/2021 18:43

@Run1000km2021 surely for Tri practice you need to do the swimming first then run :-)

@LaLaLanded - amazed anyone can run on a treadmill nevermind that fast. I ran a couple of minutes on a treadmill at the physio today and then had to have a little sit down as I get motion type sickness from them, or rather when I get off them.

FrangipaniBlue · 13/04/2021 23:51

I've been back in the pool today, 1.7k because we're only allowed 50 minute slots Hmm

But I feel like the only person in UK right now not happy about it...... I hated it!!

Back in the lake for me Grin

LaLaLanded · 14/04/2021 07:42

@tizwozliz I know what you mean about the treadmill actually - I had to really persevere when I first started running on them as it did make me feel a bit sea sick! Ideally I need to find a track to do speedier work on - living in the middle of London means lots of stopping and starting, weaving and dodging etc which plays hell on my knees on pacier runs so... treadmill it is!

Interesting about your hips - did the doctor know why that was?

@Run1000km2021 thanks! I was happy - slowly getting down the kind of splits I know I’m probably capable of. Interested you say you’re thinking of triathlons - same here. Have yet to get back in the pool but I’m torn between focussing solely on running which is my first love, and branching out. Triathlons look fun though!

Run1000km2021 · 14/04/2021 07:46

@LaLaLanded I know what you mean about focussing on running. Now I’m cycling and swimming a bit more I do sometimes feel a bit anxious that I’m not getting all of my runs in😬

But it’s been really nice to venture out into cycling and swimming. Tbh I feel like I’ve “peaked” a bit with running. I’m not at all fast but I know I will never be fast and I’m not bothered about training to get faster. Am going lots of miles and enjoying it, but now I’ve done the major milestones (half marathon, marathon) I’m looking for a new challenge. I’m a beginner swimmer and cyclist so there’s lots to learn there which is exciting! Running will always be my main love but it feels nice to branch out!

Ringsender2 · 14/04/2021 09:16

Morning all. Loving hearing about all the activity, and that even injuries are not stopping people too much.

I haven't updated my milage for ages, but thought some of you might be interested in this: www.peakrunning.co.uk/runforthebirds

I think I'll go for the Tree Pipit. Makes a nice diversion and challenge to follow for the next couple of months

drspouse · 14/04/2021 10:09

I have a swimming session booked and hopefully will be able to swim regularly but I worked out I'll be lucky to swim 10k this year so I am not going to count!
Short stroll after dropping DD off and hoping to go for a walk at lunchtime too.

tizwozliz · 14/04/2021 10:58

Interesting about your hips - did the doctor know why that was?

Probably a combination of lack of swimming and sitting at a desk all day. Various muscles that control hip stability have got weak. I've never been this long out the pool before, I was outdoor swimming in the first lockdown. The pelvic lift exercises I was doing to try and help previously weren't actually exercising the right muscles - doh! I need to add weights, do them one legged or add some resistance apparently. Always knew running was a bad idea :-) hate having to exercise to counteract effects of other exercise. Swimming is pretty much all in one. I've lost so much swimming fitness though, even with the running. Would have been even worse if I did nothing.

2.5 km swum today, 8.4km total. Lots of kick as should be good for my injury.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2021 14:33

A bit of a work panic so I didn't get out on Monday (though did do Pilates), and just 4.5 in a park yesterday. 8km by the river today, lovely.

625.5 walked
40 rowed

drspouse · 14/04/2021 15:12

Just 4k walking shops/park but it's better than recent days.

SSwimCycle21 · 15/04/2021 06:34

It ended up being a miniTri day yesterday as I cycled down for early swim then had a short trail run in the evening after dropping my eldest DD at her gym training. It’s quite a drive but I pass a lovely trail running spot so that’s my reward for a hours taxi duty. Not sure what I’ll get done today as pup has to go to vets early & I’m off with the kids today.

We got up bright and early (by our standards) and headed for the hills. Glorious walking weather, clear sun but cool - going from 2° when I got up to bare arms. 12.6km

drspouse · 15/04/2021 15:29

Swimming! But I'm not counting distance. 12 lengths of a pool... Of indeterminate length.

drspouse · 15/04/2021 19:12

And 2.6k walking, taking DD to Beavers and back.
