All ye fine runners who wish to get together to discuss running-related topics, or otherwise, come and join us here. We are a friendly and incredibly supportive group of runners, varying in ability, but all bonded together by a common theme of loving running, committed to squeezing it into our busy lives and wanting to improve our own PBs. So whether you are a full-time mum, part-time working mum, full-time working mum, working from home mum, mum who is studying, or even a dad Grin, add your race to the list so you can be sure of some moral support and advice along the way. And if you aren't racing, don't worry as you can enjoy the race reports and race vicariously.

Welcome to the madhouse running alma everyone is really helpfully on all issues not just running they are lovely :)

fannybanjo · 11/12/2011 10:17

alma come on in! It's a little but crazy sometimes but we're a good bunch. Smile congratulations on starting running, you'll get motivated by doing races. How far you running? Are your aims long distance in the future or quite happy with shorter? I'm a SAHM too so it's nice to have an outlet being on here as for some reason, my three DDs just don't share my enthusiasm for it... Confused

7.3 easy miles in the bag this morning. Takes me total in past week to 37 miles so I'm starting to get nearer marathon training distances. Hard today though, bit hungover (although only had 2 glasses of Wine last night and feel very dehydrated.

Hope everyone well, pretty quiet on here this weekend.

RunningAllDay · 11/12/2011 10:30

Hi alma - am also in Devon. There is a 10k in Exeter on 8th Jan, flat around the canal/quay area. Look at the South West Road Runner's website if you're keen. Are you north/west/south/east?

orangeLFDThead · 11/12/2011 10:36

Welcome Alma well done on starting up running and joining a club.

stickyLFDTfingers · 11/12/2011 10:53

Hi Alma! Running's great for getting back to fitness after DC, being able to do it when you can fit it in and at the speed/distance that suits you best. Plus the fact that I would be utterly insane (or insaner Wink) if I didn't get out. You'll be a lean mean running machine before you know it!

orange great that you could defer your place, best result all round. Hopefully if you take it easy you'll be as right as rain soon enough. LOL at turkey baster Grin romance is not dead!

The throat's less swollen than it was yesterday, so I can talk again properly (huge relief to everyone, obviously :)). Fortunately this next week is my "prevent injury" week, so just 3x 6 miles at easy pace. I'm hoping I'll be able to manage that tomorrow morning, then helping at school in the afternoon (with a spot of present wrapping in between). We have the decorations up now, does feel lovely and cosy at home. And the DDs are so excited already, bless them :)

fannybanjo · 11/12/2011 11:46

Scientific experiment.... I'm waiting for my running kit which was getting a bit stinky to finish on a cycle where I've used Halo sports kit wash on it... I shall report back.

rhetorician · 11/12/2011 11:50

orange sorry you are poorly...turkey baster (or equivalent!) will kill the romance, but it does work - I have 2 lovely girls who are testament to that. If you want the low-down on what to do, pm me (the details might be a bit much, even for this thread!)

had better night - DD2 fed every 2 hours or so, and then I took her from about 4.30, so DP could have a bit of continuous sleep. She is very with us - I swear she smiled at her sister this morning...but 2 hours of being alert has fried her brain and so we are trying to get her off for a good bit of sleep now. DP signed off by midwife yesterday - we were on a community scheme this time and it was completely brilliant, I must say. By definition, the midwives who want to do this are really committed (and lovely).

Right, best drag DD1 away from tv...sometimes it's the only way that baby can get fed/DP can shower etc etc. But I am outlawing all biscuit eatiing - she's had waaay too much sugar this past few days.

Am Envy of any running (or indeed rubbing) going on today - but I hope to get out tomorrow

fannybanjo · 11/12/2011 12:13

Halo works people. I had an Adidas top that was on its way to landfill, it's got rid of the stale smell under the pits and had a Nike jacket that was the same. Good stuff.

rhetorician · 11/12/2011 12:34

and welcome to alma - we are all obsessed and crazy enthusiastic runners, some of us are fast, some less so, but yeah, sign up for a race (or timed running with other people as some of us like to call it!)

rhetorician · 11/12/2011 12:37

where do you get the halo, fanny? I've several pongtastic tops that are otherwise perfectly fine...

peachLFDTsmuggler · 11/12/2011 12:42

Welcome alma. sounds like you are really getting into it, after just 8 weeks. Brilliant!

fanny, where can we get some of this magic stuff?

Glad the throat is a bit better sticky

rhet, sounds like you are all coping well. I assume you mean biscuits are banned for DD1? You and DP will surely need some!!!

Managed to get K into Moses basket 3 times last night but she only slept for 45 mins or an hour, rest of night she was in bed with me. Unfortunately this mean DP was on sofa, whichnisntnideal, but hopefully just for a few weeks!

Been at DD1's nativity play this morning. Very very cute. She was an angel. Am surprised she did it actually as was saying up till today that she wasn't going to! Afternoon at home think, after yesterday's central London debacle.

orange, turkey baster may not be romantic, but it is at least, errr festive!

Right. Off to google the contents of this years Stockport 10 Goody
Bag.

AlmaWalkingInAWinterWonderland · 11/12/2011 12:45

Thanks for the welcome all :)

Running - I'm just north of Dartmoor so North/West Devon really.

I'm doing about 2.5 miles on my own atm, although that's going up most weeks with the Zest plan. We do just shy of 4 miles with running club. I guess eventually I'd like to be looking at marathons but can't quite believe I'm actually saying that!

Not sure I could manage a 10k yet but there seem to be quite a few races in Devon so I'm sure there'll be something suitable at some point.

Bumply · 11/12/2011 12:47

Finally managed a run yesterday after more than a week of not. Very slow due to taking it easy in order to enjoy it and not slip over in the slush. 3.88 miles with fastest pace 12:40.

Has anyone run with their snow grips? I'm interested to know how they feel.

I ran in the dark with a torch which worked quite well. Quite nice running with a background of snowy hills and street lit areas in the other direction. Does anyone else alone and in the dark. Doesn't bother me but I wonder what kind of flak I'd get should anything happen.

fannybanjo · 11/12/2011 12:52

I bought a sachet from Runnersneed for 99p which has done one wash however they sell large cartons of it for around £5.50 but definitely worth it, some items might need a soak in it overnight I reckon as there's still a very very faint taint of odour if I really sniff but other than that, it's done wonders. Smile. I really should own a fucking shop me...Wink. On googling it Tesco Grocery sell it but not sure its the specific one for sports kit.

fannybanjo · 11/12/2011 12:55

online shop sells it called GermWarfare and it gets great reviews. Tesco one not the sports kit specific one.

monkeyLFDTwench · 11/12/2011 14:19

Welcome Alma. Very jealous of you and running. I'd love to live in Devon. We try and get there on holiday every year, last time we stayed at a fantastic dairy farm near Honiton. And DH crashed the farmer's tractor, but that's a story for another time!

I don't think I could use Halo as I can't use anything biological. Wonder if there's a natural remedy for stinky-pit running gear .....

peach saw your fb message about church - now I get it. Have you put pccies of the little angel on?

orange turkey basters always look huge to me! What about one of those little nurofen syringes (can't believe I just said that ....). A friend of mine used donor sperm, sadly not succesfully, but said it was pretty unscientific and apparently has a good rate of success. We await an update!

bumply most of my runs are on my own in the dark, generally street-lit. Came a cropper once though when the lights ran out and I decided to carry on, I tripped flat on my face and rolled downhill. Made for some interesting grazes a bit like fanny and her carpet burn.

sticky glad the gob is back in action. Nothing worse than a sore throat or ear-ache if you ask me.

rhet yes I'm another one for tough love. Which is kind of funny as I'm a bit of an old hippy from the extended bf/co-sleeping point of view, but if I wasn't tough my house would descend even further into chaos. I haven't been tough on bedtimes in the past though, and paid the price believe me!

Debi greeat parkrun time, I can only dream of getting near there.

N4NNY shame on you! - our nearest parkrun is such a long way away I have to get up at the crack of dawn to do it. And I would need the car to get the boys to football. Might give it another crack once footie finishes next week.

Took ds1 to a match first thing, then on to swimming. Feeling a bit delicate after class party last night. We played that game with a cereal box where you have to pick it up from the floor using your teeth and can't put hands or knees down, then you tear more and more off the top each time to make it harder. You lot will be amazed to hear I won. You know the way giraffes bend down to drink, by just splaying their legs further and further apart then leaning in? That was my secret method. Not pretty but it worked in combination with huge amounts of anaesthetising alcohol. Lucky I was wearing my huge white applecatchers best knickers!

RunningAllDay · 11/12/2011 14:40

Grin for the game monkey - great mental picture

monkeyLFDTwench · 11/12/2011 16:19

cherry how old did you say ds is? I have some little coats, nice hoodies etc. that ds3 has outgrown (he's just turned 3) if you want them, not worn much as almost all his stuff was new. You're welcome to them if youy think they might be of use. PM me if you want.

DebiTheScot · 11/12/2011 16:53

good to hear all that shredding has paid off monkey Xmas Grin

Wheelybug · 11/12/2011 17:53

I think I've sent you a friend request cherry. Initials VH.

monkey how awful of boy who had the party. And how terrible the parents didn't think about the fact he'd excluded 2. I hate that and end up inviting far too many kids to parties because I don't want to upset anyone. Hate the thought of it all being
Talked about and someone being left out.

fanny great mileage !

orange and futurity and sticky hope
You're feeling better soon.

rhet glad dd2 settling down. I hope dd1 adjusts soon. Am sure she will. Sorry about non sleeping dd2 peach - no advice , I'm still working on it for my
Dd2 Grin

Welcome alma!

Hello to everyone else. Not much to report. No running this weekend as away with friends (went to see Santa this morning at Audley end which is near some of you I think). Crazy week ahead with concerts/ parties etc. At the moment i can't run thurs or fri so am going to have to do Monday Tuesday Wednesday then Saturday which I don't really think is a great idea but needs must unless I can find someone to have dd2 for a bit on thurs ad nursery shut for the day.

Wheelybug · 11/12/2011 17:55

bumply I run alone in the dark and quite enjoy it but am in London so it's never really dark and you're never really alone.

futurity · 11/12/2011 18:09

Thanks wheely . I'm in bed with snots and neck pain..doesn't hurt so much lying down but when I get up...ouch! Hungry as well and everyone else is out at Christmas party stuffing there faces so am truly fed up!

stickyLFDTfingers · 11/12/2011 18:23

oh poor futurity. Do you have any yoghurt in? Slips down the throat easily and it's comforting (I think so anyway!). Have you taken painkillers/anti inflammatories to deal with the neck?

monkey I am so impressed. I wish there were pictures Wink

fanny you are an internet shop waiting to happen...

peach hope you get some zzzzs tonight. Your little angel sounds very cute! Did you know (fascinating fact approaching) that there are 5000 people per square km in London? No wonder it feels a bit squashed. I must admit, although it would have made total sense for me to work in London after graduation, I just couldn't face it (having been brought up under a hedge). I can see that Scotland would seem doubly inviting.

bumply I haen't tried using the trax yet but am looking forward to it! The idea of a lovely run in the sunshine on crisp virgin snow is very appealing. Unfortunately we just seem to get thin coatings of ice atm.

Really hoping to get out tomorrow am, will lay my running clothes out tonight, which seems to galvanise me.

futurity · 11/12/2011 18:32

Sore throat gone thankfully..just neck pain and snots. Have taken nurofen plus which takes the edge off. Off to doctors tomorrow if no better. Off to make a jam sandwich (pathetic tea !)

stickyLFDTfingers · 11/12/2011 18:32

shoold have said also rhet hope you get a good amount of sleep tonight, and that the bedtime antics calm down a bit for DD2. FWIW, what we did with ours was: DP would take over DD2 when he got home, then I would go and sit with DD1 for her bath and bedtime, so she got some time alone with me, not being disturbed by DD2. She did seem to like and appreciate that.
