Anyone want to join me? It means we should start 2012 being able to run 5k - now there's an incentive to stick with it.

I have just done W4R1 - only just though - thought would die at one point and my speed was barely recognisable as running ... I do find music is essential to keep me motivated - ipod is full of jolly but crap tunes - need to find some more so any good ideas would be appreciated..

I really want to crack week 4 as I have been here 3 times before and just never progressed.. not sure what the issue is - sometimes legs go, other times it is lungs.. but today it was my mind - everything was working reasonably well and then I just felt myself give up as it was not natural.. managed to push through but need to stop it from happening.. I think I have a lot of perceptions about self that I am not a runner - when for 3 minutes at a time, I quite clearly am Grin

HamblesHandbag · 21/11/2011 10:51

musttidyup, re how to keep iPod/phone safe, I've bought this top from Next which has zip up pockets for my keys and phone.

DooinMeCleanin · 21/11/2011 10:52

Am I allowed to join even though I am on week 3? Although I am going back to week two this week owing to the fact I have a cold and feel shitty. I am just about to go for my run once I stop procrastinating.

AtYourCervix · 21/11/2011 10:53

hello. can I join. I did my first run for about 10 years this morning. doing the NHS C25K. it was actually OK and I didn't die which surprised me.

Just got to keep going and not stop.

HamblesHandbag · 21/11/2011 10:54

zzmum, wow week 4! I'm struggling to see how my pathetic attempts at 90 seconds run will become 5 minutes plus... Shock it doesn't seem possible!

ZZMum · 21/11/2011 10:59

HH - great name - I never thought I would run 3 minutes to be honest in week 2 and somehow managed it - but now I am wondering how I leap from 3 to 5 without an extended lie down between the runs.. I took a peak at Week 5 - and that is running for 8 WHOLE MINUTES!! Decided to ignore that for time being and spending maybe a couple of weeks on Week 4 in true coward styleee..

You can run for 90 seconds !! it is not pathetic - it is amazing - and soon you will be doing more and more - it is quite addictive really - or that is how I feel now post run and full of endorphins - an hour ago when on treadmill, I had quite a different opinion!!

vanimal · 21/11/2011 11:03

Hello, can I join too? I am also a v unfit and not-real runner. I started c25K in August, and am on W7 now.

So lots of stopping in between, as DH and I travel a fair bit for work, and have nobody to watch DDs, hence lots of breaks in running.

I struggled on W1 back in August, but, the program does work, and now, on W7 I can just about run 25 mins without stopping. It does nearly kill me, but I can do it. I am not quite sure how that happened, I think c25K is perfectly paced for non-runners like me.

Am going to through a bit of blip where I am losing motivation at the moment, but determined to see it to the end. I have noticed a little weight loss (down a belt size quite comfortably) and DH who never compliments me noticed that my waist is now looking trimmer too.

Most of the benefits for me are psychological though - just the sheer good feeling that comes through knowing you are doing some challenging and regular exercise.

I am trying to gear myself up for a run at lunchtime today, I'll let you know how it goes.

Good luck everyone, we can all do this.

HamblesHandbag · 21/11/2011 11:03

I'm just proud that I didn't actually die Smile

didldidi · 21/11/2011 11:08

dooin - I have just finished week 3, the second 3 minute interval was a killer and to be honest it's more of a slow jog then a walk! is week 4 really five minutes? Shock

didldidi · 21/11/2011 11:09

sorry more of a slow jog than a run that should have said!

ContinentalKat · 21/11/2011 12:58

Did W1R2 this morning and still feel fine! Maybe a stupid question, but where do you keep your keys when you are running? I have a snazzy armband for my phone, but my top and trousers don't have pockets, so I am running with my keys in my hand and feel stupid. Briefly thought about putting it in bra, but don't fancy sweaty keys, either ?

musttidyupmusttidyup · 21/11/2011 14:02

Get a bumbag Kat? Wink

ContinentalKat · 21/11/2011 14:51

Ahem, I might be ok holding my keys, actually Grin

DooinMeCleanin · 21/11/2011 14:55

I have a jogging lead that goes around my waist (with a dog on the end pf course Grin) I clip my keys to the lead.

I realise this is of no help to you unless you have a dog with which to run with. I can reccomend Fox Terriers to be great running partners. Strong enough to, erm, help you uphill, not so strong that they pull you over.

I have not done any exercise today. I still feel like crap so I had a nap instead. I am hoping a day of rest and good, nutritious food will sort me out for Bootcamp tommorrow. I might have a run before Bootcamp.

helpwiththis · 21/11/2011 17:13

hiya got inspired from atyourcervix on another thread and ran after two mnths today.also started c25k

golemmings · 21/11/2011 18:38

Wow folk on here are doing really well! I'm currently sitting here feeding DS and ignoring night garden which dd is watching wishing DH was in tonight so I could go out for a run. Still he's home tomorrow so I might get to run in daylight which will be novel.

Zzz, where about a are you? Would company solve your week 4 challenge? Either real or on the end if a phone? When I first started running I ran with a mate and without any plan we got from 3 miles to 6 in 3 months just once a week. Chatting made it easier.

brighthair · 21/11/2011 20:57

W1R1 done Grin
Didn't get out of breath but my calves were burning, almost like cramp. Did my weights and resistance training after. Bit achy now, not helped by heffalump horse treading on my foot today. When that didn't put me off she proceeded to be as difficult as possible for an hour to ride Grin

ZZMum · 21/11/2011 21:58

hey GoL - that sounds great! I could really do with the support - am in the NW if you are around that way - or definitely we could speak - sounds like you know what you are doing with the progressions .. I will send you a PM as well - THANKS Grin

ZZMum · 22/11/2011 10:39

just done W4D2 - and i did not die! In fact, I would say I just did it Grin - at one point in the last run - of 5 WHOLE MINUTES, I did consider just stopping and going for a steam which is my usual cop out, but managed to hang on thanks to Chumbawumba Tub thumping - would appear taste in music died rather than me - and finished it!! woohooo!!!

AtYourCervix · 22/11/2011 11:06

been to the gym. aching rather a lot now.

will keep going!

golemmings · 22/11/2011 14:10

musttidyupmusttidyup · 22/11/2011 18:55

W1R3 done! 2 days off now hurrah. Definitely pulled something on inner thigh which hurts like a bitch aches. Any ideas?

didldidi · 22/11/2011 21:10

ZZMum I just did W4D1 today and managed the five minutes for the first time and it feels like a huge achievement doesn't it?!

golemmings · 22/11/2011 23:43

W1r2 done tonight. It was bloody cold though. Found it much harder than r1 overall but I found the first 2 runs really easy so upped my pace a bit and then gave myself a stitch. My average speed was less than Saturday but I covered more ground, weirdly.

When I used to run round here (pre dcs) I could do so completely anonymously. Now I know enough people in the village that I passed 4 people and knew 3 of them so my slow running exploits are now embarassingly common knowledge.

Friday night will be w1r3. I remember when the highlight of my Friday nights meant hitting the pub at 5 and staggering out mid evening to get chips. Now it involves having one child in bed, othet one fed and going out in the cold and dark to run around in cirles. How times change!
