Anyone want to join me? It means we should start 2012 being able to run 5k - now there's an incentive to stick with it.

Bump!

I have had an injury Sad

It was the running the furthest distance I've ever run, after my wallow in the Hamble that did it. Same area that has been problematic before so I took a week off running (and postponed my very first 5k). Couldn't wait to get started again though!!

Anyhoo I did a couple of 3k test runs on Monday and Wednesday and all seems to be well again. I think the rest (plus the ice when I got back) seems to have worked. I feel like I've lost some of the stamina I had built up, seems like over 10 mins is a struggle now but it'll come back I know.

How is everyone else doing?

musttidyupmusttidyup · 04/05/2012 18:41

Hi all just to let you know I've entered my first 10k! It's the race for life in july. How's everyone else doing?

5ofus · 05/05/2012 13:28

Pretty good. Did parkrun this morning in 38.08. That's only the second time I've "run" 5k (yes there was some walking in there)!

I've been running every other day. Usually around 3k per run so this morning was a big jump.

Well done on signing up for a 10k! That's fantastic. I'll be doing a race for life 5k. Just havent decided which one!

golemmings · 23/05/2012 23:56

Hello! Good to see you guys are still hanging in there. Me too. Getting out 2-4 times a week, running a mix of hilly trails and flattish roads.

I'm jealous of your park run, 5 (and not an unreasonable time either!) There's nothing like that here and all the running clubs meet at 7ish when I'm feeding DS.

I have totally fallen in love with endomondo as an app. I love the mile updates, I love the pep talks that DH gives me as I'm out, I love the stats and the way they're displayed on the map, and the graph which shows me altitude and running speed. I also love the fact that it pulls out your on for you.

I have my first 10k in 3 weeks and ran 9k on Monday so I'm just about ready. How's your training going, tidy? Which 10k are you doing? I'm doing the 2 castles run - from warwick to kenilworth which should be interesting!

OP posts:
Megalosaurus · 24/05/2012 19:56

Hello!

('tis me 5ofus under a dino themed name change. )

Are you sure there's no parkrun near you? They're all over the place! I did the one near my parents at the weekend in a very unrespectable 39.24 but my excuses include wet course, cider and 4 hours sleep so I don't feel bad about it.

I've been maintaining 3 times a week, and I'm up to 160km in total now. I'm still not near 5k in my training runs closer to three but I'm working up to running the whole thing. I suspect I have a shin splint in my right leg which might mean a couple of weeks of resting.

Good luck in your 10k Grin

golemmings · 25/05/2012 08:45

There really is no park run here: I keep looking. We're in Shropshire and thie nearest one is wolverhampton, best part of an hour away.I wouldn't worry about your park run times. They will come down as you increase your run:walk ratio.

Don't know much about shin splints but - owww. Is it something that different shoes can help with?

OP posts:
Megalosaurus · 28/05/2012 09:35

What a shame - new ones are opening all the time though. Three have started near me (or are planned to start) since I've been running.

I think there's one at Leamington and one in Coventry, and Worcester too and your mention of the two castles 10k made me wonder how close you are to those.

Exciting news for me - latest parkrun got me a PB of 37.09 for the 5k - a whole minute faster than my previous PB and I ran far more of it Grin.

It was a pacing event so they had volunteers doing paced runs (plus a "get me round" guy, but it was a "nagger" who supported me to run up a hill I've only walked up before. At one point he was calling "move over please faster runner coming through" to move other runners out of my way Grin

170km and counting....

Now shin splints, I did take some Ibuprofen before I ran (just in case) and was fully prepared to stop in the event I felt any discomfort at all but it was OK. I wonder if it was the softer surface rather than the tarmac I've been running on. I've read up on it and of course opinions are divided as to what causes them. My plan is to add cycling and swimming into the mix, and try to build up muscle in my legs to support my running. Trainers are quite new and were fitted in a running shop so I don't think they're the cause, but if plan A doesn't work, I'll head back to the running shop and appeal for help.

golemmings · 28/05/2012 23:43

Thx for looking for me. Dad is on leamington. I've been tempted to try and het down to one of his local park runs. We're in Shropshire, an hour and a half away.

Impressed you knocked a minute off your time though. That's brilliant! Well done.

I've not run for a week - too hot during the day, and by the time we've got the kids to bed its 8 and I'm too bloody knackered.

I did a kayak race at the weekend and won which was a surprise.

Need to get out and run tomorrow.12 days to go...

Megalosaurus · 29/05/2012 10:04

I used to live in Leamington so it's an old stomping ground for me Grin

The company I work for has an office in the area so I lived there for a few years.

golemmings · 30/05/2012 08:27

No way! I'm wondering if you work for the same people I do... I work out of the shrewsbury office!

OP posts:
Megalosaurus · 30/05/2012 11:16

Ah no, we don't have a Shrewsbury office. That would have been wierd. The company I work for has a large office in Warwick, hence living in Leam Grin

golemmings · 31/05/2012 08:40

Leam is a nice place to live. We moved from warwick and I hated it at first but as a teenager I came to appreciate the benefits!

OP posts:
Megalosaurus · 31/05/2012 09:39

Ah yes the memories of nights out in Monroe's in Leamington followed by Hangover Friday Grin

golemmings · 01/06/2012 23:06

Right. The deed is done. I've just signed up for a half marathon in October. It's the day after ds's birthday which means in 46 weeks i'll have gone from having a 6 week baby to running 13miles. Not too shabby if I say so myself.

OP posts:
Megalosaurus · 08/06/2012 16:13

That's fantastic - great news go

Keep us updated on your training - do you have a plan?

golemmings · 10/06/2012 15:17

2 castles 10k complete. 57:44. I'm chuffed to blazes. It's a lovely course, brilliantly organized, and is mostly flat. Only problem is that it sold out within about 24hrs!

OP posts:
Megalosaurus · 10/06/2012 20:45

Wow - that's fantastic go - well done Grin

I'm still going, 3 times a week on average. I even went to the campsite gym on our half term break as it was raining. This is total dedication as I'd been in bed snug and warm beforehand, plus the treadmills were in front of a bank of floor to ceiling mirrors!! I had a choice of watching myself run or watching the time - so I chose the time and it was very very demoralising! Occasionally I'd look up and see a red sweaty version of me, and that was demoralising too.

Still - I did it and am proud of that. The gym (not air conditioned) was very warm, so I also had the delightful feeling of flinging sweat as I ran, and dripping sweat when I did my cool down stretches. The gym bunnies in the corner with their heavy weights were very good and totally ignored the spectacle in the corner Smile

I'm still struggling to get above 3km of running on a normal run though, it takes something like parkrun to make me go further (and I'm miserable for the 3 to 4.5 km bit). I'm definitely getting faster at the 3km but I feel so shattered by the time I get to my usual stopping point I can't even think of adding any more! I tend to run to a local shopping centre and back so new plan is to add a bit at my turn round point.

I'm also cycling or swimming at least once a week to try to build up some supporting leg muscles for running.

golemmings · 10/06/2012 22:14

Have you got anywhere off road that you can run, 5? I only ask becasue DH has started c25k - ran a week, ran too fast had 3 weeks off injured and started again last week. he's just finished w2r3 but has moved to run on a trail through the woods near us. He drives to the woods, and runs from there (I don't like to remind him that I run to the car park and then round the woods; that would be mean!) but has managed not to injure himself since running on the softer surface.

Alternatively, can you start by running in the opposite direction for just a few minutes and then do your normal run to the shopping centre? Would that fool your brain/body into doing the comfortable bit last? I know when I have a regular route, I get part way through it and I know that what ever happens I can always run back from there so adding more distance infront of that point is a great way of sneaking the distance up a little.

I'm impressed at the gym though. Well done you!

Megalosaurus · 22/06/2012 11:41

I've not replied for a few days but have been pondering your thoughts above!

parkrun is mostly off road, I did the 5k route in 37.59 so not my fastest time on 90% grass and it was hard work but felt ok after, dodging pine cones took my mind off the running. I'm doing parkrun on 30th again. I can't think of any suitable off road running routes that don't involve a 20 minute drive - the last time I ran off road down by the shore was the infamous "nearly fell in the Hamble" story. I still have the scar on my knee...

I also added a bit into the start of my regular route, just a gentle jog down to the bus stop and back which moved the run from 2.8k to 3.1.

poachedeggs · 25/06/2012 21:34

Ohbugrit here - remember me? :)

You lot are amazing! 5k, 10k, half marathons! Inspirational doesn't begin to describe it! I'm delighted, proud and also not surprised because you're a tenacious bunch Grin

You may recall I stopped running after completing 3 miles for Sport Relief because I kept getting knee pain. I've since seen a physio who reckons it's my medial ligament and she isn't optimistic about my running career :( However, she has found a few problems which might be contributing, so I've got work to do.

In the meantime I've put on half a stone! So tonight I bit the bullet and went out on the bike. A voice in my head was whining all the way (it's just not the same as a run) but I'll just have to suck it up!

Anyway, just wanted to thank you folks for your support over c25k, and for sharing my wonderment that running could be fun. I haven't forgotten you :)

Megalosaurus · 28/06/2012 10:35

Hello Bugrit/poachedeggs Grin - 'tis me 5ofus Grin

Welcome back! Sorry to hear not good news on running and I know what you mean. I have to say I also really enjoy cycling, but it feels like it's not that difficult compared to running so I find myself looking for hills to go up. DP has abandoned running in favour of cycling too and does 10 miles in 40 mins three times a week.

I've just upgraded my bike from a Halfords special to a second hand Muddy Fox, and I'm trying to get out on it at least once a week.

I did a charity walk at the weekend (Cheltenham Circular Challenge) - apparently some people RAN it. We didn't! 13 miles took us 7 hours of solid walking and my legs have only just recovered. First run is tonight after my big walk - wish me luck!

Megalosaurus · 28/06/2012 21:08

Hurray!

3.37km straight through run 26.57 - very pleased Grin

Had a GPS failure so had to map it manually on t'Internet.

Next run: Parkrun on Sat Smile

golemmings · 02/07/2012 08:56

See bugrit. You say the sweetest things! Sorry your running career is in the doldrums. You may get to love cycling though. How did you feel after your first run? And on a bike you'll get to go further and see more so its not all bad.

I need to get out on my bike. A friend is talking me into a quadrathlon in the autumn and before then my bike needs turret and I need some muscles!

Hurray for 27 solid minutes of running, 5. Go you! And how did your park run go?

I did 5k off road with the buggy last week. We did the race for life. I'd never run with DS although i'd done buggy fit with dd but I figured I could run 10k without a buggy and, hell, I've delivered two babies so there's almost nothing I can't do so we ran it. Stony pot holed track with lots of puddles and grassy fields. He loved it. Especially the second lap when we got separated from the rest of the team, I had to talk to him constantly so people didn't try to run through the buggy and he just squealed in delight all the way around. Finished in 35 minutes and he was given his own medal at the end!

Think if I'm running on roads I might take him with me more often!

OP posts:
Megalosaurus · 02/07/2012 09:01

35 minutes with a buggy? Crikey that's faster than my parkrun time this weekend (I did 38.59 and felt every second of it!). Parkrun number 5 for me Grin

I know it's psychological, I know when I do my regular run I'm done at around 3km so I know I can do it, with parkrun I know I have 2 more km to go so something (me!!) holds me back.

golemmings · 02/07/2012 19:42

Ran 13k today. We'd left a car behind after yesterdays canoe race and since we were in the area today I ran over to get it. The first couple of k were boring and rubbish; the next 4 were ok, pretty villagrs, lovely gardens, posh mansions but then it just got hard and boring; at 7k I remembered I should have had proper breakfast, at 8k I remembered I had no money to buy anything at the shop, at 9k I thought of phoning dh to come and collect me... But I did it. There was a brief walk at 11km when endomondo turned itself off and I was playing with my phone. Took about an hour 20. Longest and furthest I've ever run so I'm quite pleased.
