Shred for Couchto5Kers and anybody else

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/09/2011 20:51

This thread is a spin off from the CouchTo5k 2011 Pt 3, where some of us decided that as well as doing the C25K we would try the Shred (preferably wearing purple nail varnish)

All Shredders are welcome, not just those from the C25k thread (and not just those with purple nails).

Anyone looking for something else to do I do recommend the pilates DVD I linked to earlier, as I think Jillian cheats you on the 'stretch' part and also I think my knees suffered with overtraining (although if you run then maybe you knees are ok?)

LinzerTorte · 13/09/2011 07:10

I've been doing it in bare feet so far but think I'm going to switch to trainers as of today, as one of my knees started to hurt a bit yesterday. I've just been using the rug on our living room floor as a mat, although I'm sure a proper mat would be more comfortable.

Jelli Ah, but you're not really behind as you've done it all before. In fact, you're on your second lap. Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/09/2011 07:33

Hey - rocking the Uma Thurman is good!!

Day 8 here which is perilously close to 10!!

I do it in bare feet but if I wore trainers I would be able to kick my butt. So I'm tempted to put them on once.

I'm also tempted to get a mat or something because those ab things hurt my bones. Whimper.

Melody - it hurts less now! But make sure you do the warm up really well and maybe double the length of the cool down. I do longer on the quad stretches because it wasn't long enough for me.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/09/2011 07:46

Day 8 done and managed all the cardio! I'm wearing an old pair of running shoes for it, I have on and off back and knee problems and wouldn't dare do it without.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/09/2011 12:12

Nagoo - thanks for that link, I have been thinking that although the shred does a lot of Ab work there is not much for your actual back muscles.

I bought this DVD 10 min back posture workouts about 6 months ago but a lot of the exercises need you to stand against a wall, we don't really have any wall without furniture agains it anywhere in sight of a DVD player, so that hasn't been very successful for me, might try the one you linked. I used to do a lot of pilates pre DCS, it is very good. Our Amazon bill is going to be though the roof, luckily DH has Amazon Prime, even luckier his account is set up so all the bills get paid out of his bank account!

I have solved the Jumping Jacks problem by not raising my arms right above my head, that was what was killing me. If I keep them below shoulder level it is do-able.

Day 9 done.

I tried it barefoot the first time but my ankles hurt so I do it in running shoes now. But I was reading a thread at the weekend recommending separate shoes.

Lovely DH said last night (almost unprompted) that I was looking more svelte Grin

melodyangel · 13/09/2011 12:30

Day two done not as bad. Thanks for all the tips esp. doing more streches at the end.

Tried with shoes today which I think helped but I find my feet cramp when I'm doing the skipping/ butt kicks.

Might try a run tonight too.

First whole day with any DC's since July, time for some loud music with swearing in me thinks.

melodyangel · 13/09/2011 12:34

Well done shredded! I dream of svelte.

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 13/09/2011 12:34

Enjoy melody! I was going to say peace and quiet, but it doesn't sound as though it will be Grin

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 13/09/2011 12:35

Oh and svelte is a relative concept Grin

rookiemater · 13/09/2011 16:49

Sorry I am a bit late to the party but have done Part 1 twice ( although had to skip a day in between as far too feeble to do it in a row. I run as well but I don't think I could face doing the shred and running on the same day. Do you think I will still get results if I run 3 days a week and shred on the other 4 ( or maybe 3 depending on how I feel)?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/09/2011 18:58

I hate Anita and that smug bitch on the left with the inane grin....
Just about to do Day 8....

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/09/2011 19:09

Rookie hello, not sure about that, I guess you will get results it will just take longer. I had planned to only shred on non running days, but was talked into trying to do the shred every day on here, I have found that it is easier for me to shred first thing whereas I run in the evenings, so it has been manageable so far, although heavy on the laundry!

My heavier weights have just arrived (gulp).

LinzerTorte · 13/09/2011 20:03

Day 4 done. Could some of you please take a day or two off so that I feel slightly less behind? Grin

I wore trainers for the first time today, and it definitely seemed easier on the knees. I also listened to my own music over the top of Jillian, which made it go slightly faster.

Hi rookie, I was also planning on running and shredding on alternate days and I'm sure you will see results, although - like WhoKnows has already said - probably just not as quickly as if you were shredding every day. However, I've found that shredding is something I can do with the DC around so am managing to fit it in every day after all (when I'm not ill or snowed under with work) as I'm desperate to keep up with everyone else.

Have fun with your new weights, WhoKnows - that reminds me, I still haven't decided what else to order from Amazon so I can get my purple ones.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/09/2011 20:06

Grin Linzer - I have just done Day 8! Yaaaaaayyyy

I'm so svelte I don't recognise myself anymore.....

Nagoo · 13/09/2011 20:07

Day 6 :)

And 4 miles walking with the school run. I'll be wasting away :)

rookiemater · 13/09/2011 20:28

Thanks guys I am not feeling as knackered as after I did it the first time so maybe I will be able to squeeze it in on running days and maybe just fast forward through the cardio ( I had to do this the first time as I got a whim to do it but was downstairs in my nightie with no sports bra)

LinzerTorte · 13/09/2011 20:32

Feel free to rub it in, Pistey. Grin Parade your svelteness all you like; I shall find ways and means of catching up with you.

I think you might be overdoing it with all that walking too, Nagoo. Perhaps it would be best for you to take a break tomorrow. Wink

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/09/2011 21:26

Yes, I've found I can do it with the DCs underfoot as well. Tomorrow is possibly going to be tricky, DD has been sick all day today, I've had to miss work and will be all behind. She won't be going to school tomorrow, DH and I are going to work at home half a day each (I need to go to work to fetch laptop and paperwork in the morning). If we are up with her much in the night tomorrow's shred might get postponed. I ran tonight anyway, so won't be the end of the world if I miss a day.

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 13/09/2011 21:58

No, it won't WhoKnows. Grin Seriously though, hope your DD is better soon and that you all get a good night's sleep.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/09/2011 07:23

Day 9 done (sorry Linzer) and DD has slept through the night so fingers crossed she's on the mend.

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 14/09/2011 08:07

Oh well, never mind WhoKnows. Wink At least your DD is better; hopefully she's over the worst of it now. I'll do Day 5 later when the DC are home, as I've just been for my run and over a quarter of the morning (i.e. my entire child-free time) has now gone.

GettinTrimmer · 14/09/2011 09:59

I've just done day 8, but impatient to get rid of my expanded waistline.

Agree with you pistey about that smug one on the left, getting on my nerves when she says 'oh yeah!'

linzer well done on going for your run, how far did you go?

whoknows ikwym about disrupted sleep interrupting exercise, I forced myself to do shred today, awake at 4am. Glad your dd is better.

LinzerTorte · 14/09/2011 10:18

Thanks Trimmer; I ran for 5k (I finished C25k a couple of months ago and am now trying to get my speed up - one of the reasons I decided to do the Shred). Well done on Day 8 but grr at another one who is ahead of me! Wink

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/09/2011 12:07

Thanks Trimmer and Linzer

Have you noticed how she (Natalie) doesn't squat in the punches bit, barely bends her knees and thinks no one will notice!
