Shred for Couchto5Kers and anybody else

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/09/2011 20:51

This thread is a spin off from the CouchTo5k 2011 Pt 3, where some of us decided that as well as doing the C25K we would try the Shred (preferably wearing purple nail varnish)

All Shredders are welcome, not just those from the C25k thread (and not just those with purple nails).

I am going to spend some of my R&R time browsing fitness DVDs on Amazon as I think I want to concentrate on strength rather than cardio, I get plenty of that from the running! I have had the sciatica once every few years since I was quite young, also get various other back aches and pains so core strength really should be a priority. I was the other way round, pregnancy completely cured it all both times, then it all came back afterwards.

Sounds like a good idea, WhoKnows. I'm sure that all those planks aren't doing my knees any good and also feel that I'm getting enough cardio exercise from running. Luckily DD1 being born cured my sciatica, but I do get backache occasionally; the last time was when I had that stomach bug last month and spent all day in bed. I could hardly sleep the second night as my back was so painful, so should probably be focusing on posture as well as core strength etc.

Pah! Lightweights! (only joking, it's killing my knees too).

Tomorrow is day 30 for me, so I'm going to do level 3 one last time, then start to alternate running, the Jillian yoga DVD I linked to on the other thread and shredding. I didn't weigh/measure myself at the start, but I feel trimmer and have less of a tummy: I just need to keep it that way now!

StrangewaysHereICome · 11/10/2011 13:44

Helloooo, I have just ordered the Shred plus Jillian Michaels workout with weights (so I can swing my new kettlebell about!). Why do I always go steaming in with buying two DVD's?! Its as if I think it will work doubly quick without actually having to do anything Hmm.

Sooooo when it arrives I'll join you lovely shredded ladies ...... there I've said it now so I'll have to do it! While I'm waiting, just how painful is it? I mean, say compared to childbirth or kidney stones?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/10/2011 17:44

Hello Strangeways - all I will say is don't do the walk-out planks in Level 2 if you suffer from any problems with your lower back!

OOh strangeways is Workout with Weights suitable for UK DVD players or do you have a spangly fancy player (or are you elsewhere in the world?). I don't have that one. Do let us know how you get on.....

StrangewaysHereICome · 12/10/2011 14:08

Errrr, just a normal DVD player and I'm in the good old UK! I thought a DVD was a DVD, are there different ones [looking daft emoticon]? Well if it doesn't work I'll send it back ..... ....

StrangewaysHereICome · 12/10/2011 14:13

Ooops, it seems you're right Jelli how annoying! Note to self, don't wave the credit card about when sleep deprived!! I'll try and cancel it, humph!

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 13/10/2011 01:04

Hello Strangeways, welcome to the thread!

I did Jillian's yoga DVD (think that is only available for US DVD players as well) again today - am going to aim for 2 shreds, 2 runs and 1 yoga session a week.

StrangewaysHereICome · 13/10/2011 21:09

It's arrived, but I havent unwrapped it yet! might give it a whirl tomorrow...

JelliBelli · 16/10/2011 15:52

I am disappointed abot Workout with Weights but I hope you managed to cancel it Strangeways. But how did you get on with shredding? You must have tried by now.....

Been dabbling with my Jillian DVDs but really I need a plan to follow.....

How did anyones inch loss go if you've finished?

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 18/10/2011 13:05

Jelli, I don't have a tape measure, so can't say for sure. But I have definitely lost some girth, and have more of a waist now. Bust seems the same (I would not have minded losing a bit) and legs and bottom look and feel more toned.

I went back to level 1 yesterday and amazingly I could do the full push ups! I did the modified ones throughout level 1, and remember after my first day or two thinking that I'd never use my arms again Grin. So it's great to see that I've got fitter and stronger. Thank you for getting us started on shredding, it was your posting on the C25K thread that inspired us!

StrangewaysHereICome · 19/10/2011 15:05

Well I've finally got round to day one of the shred ..... and it wasn't too brutal. The cardio was fine (but then I do run a lot) and ooooh the ab stuff was good, tough but I can feel it doing me good already. Can't do press ups for toffee though Hmm.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2011 21:15

Well done Strangeways. I have officially given up, it is just too much for my on and off back problems and brand new shoulder problem I think. I wouldn't rule out going back to stage 1 at some point, but not yet. I have however signed myself up for a 4 week course at the sports centre for strength training for people with bad backs.

Well done to you Shredded too, glad you can see the difference second time around.

Jelli - I should have measured myself a couple of weeks ago, my stomach was definitely firmer, I suspect I would be back to where I was now Sad. I'm glad I tried it though.

Well I woke up this morning and thought ooh my arms ache, why is that? Then I remembered .... So day two done, after a 5mile run this morning. It was harder today, maybe yesterday I spent too much time getting the right form Hmm rather than actually doing it!

Sooo I think a few more days before level two, but I can't help thinking I might want to punch Jillian before the 30 days are up.

Don't feel bad whoknows you've got to look after yourself, especially your back. Good luck with your course Smile

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 25/10/2011 07:15

Strangeways, how are you getting on?

StrangewaysHereICome · 25/10/2011 22:11

Hi shredded, I have to confess I am a bad shredder [hsad] I haven't done it for five days. Bad bad me. I did quite a bit of running at the weekend and half term with three kids is rather busy. I will not do it in the evening with DH about [hwink]" i'll restart soon...
