@Summerstorms

WTF would anyone think remainers wanted a no deal?
The remainers who were adament we'd not get a deal will certainly have been hoping that they'd be proved right, just to gloat "told you so"!
sergeilavrov · 24/12/2020 16:20

My career is primarily in international negotiation. We cannot believe the terms the UK got. Don’t know what they had on the EU, because the UK refused to withhold intelligence and counterterrorism info despite that being the best way to get their bucket list. Curious to see how they did it.

Bathroom12345 · 24/12/2020 16:20

We 100% need some good news now. It might be that you were a Remainers and tbh - I think they could have considered giving a % that leave voters needed to reach but then another side of me says it was right to say the highest number of votes will win out in the end.

Anyway it’s all done now. Maybe not champagne time but perhaps a small glass of Prosecco?

Next stop booting CV19 into outer space.

So none

sashagabadon · 24/12/2020 16:22

Wasn’t the fishing argument more about access to our waters as much as the fish in it?
Anyway, sounds fair re. A transition period of 5.5 years, gives U.K. time to build up it’s fishing fleet by 2026. Sounds good for fishing communities in the future?

Sorry, but you can't say that. Remainers aren't an homogeneous mass any more than leavers. And unless you know every single remainer, you can't possibly know whether some thought that or not.
ChequerBoard · 24/12/2020 16:25

I'm sorry, whilst it is obviously better then a no-deal debacle, I can't bring myself to celebrate a national own goal.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 24/12/2020 16:26

Do we know how many people are gagging to get into fishing? Is it enough to have been worth risking a deal over?

Anyway, I for one am bloody relieved there's a deal done. I do wonder what swung it though...oh to have been a fly on many walls!

SonjaMorgan · 24/12/2020 16:27

I'm a remainer. I was convinced we wouldn't get a deal that would make it worth all the cost and upheaval of this process. I still feel the same. I also believe that any deal is better than no deal.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 24/12/2020 16:28

@MarinPrime

Some remainers on mumsnet will be disappointed. They were convinced Johnson was going for no deal and gleeful about the prospect of brexiteers suffering the consequences.
Hardly! We remainers would've suffered too - without even the consolation of having 'sovereignty' or whatever it is the Brexiteers are happy about.

That depends on what other job opportunities are available in the, often, run down coastal communities.
GinAndTonicOnIt · 24/12/2020 16:29

I'm not trying to be a pessimist but.... the timing seems a tad convenient? Xmas eve??? Let's give everyone some cheer for Xmas day???

StealthPolarBear · 24/12/2020 16:29

May had a deal. It was voted down. Aren't we back there?

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 24/12/2020 16:30

And also the expense of entering fishing from scratch against whatever work they have now / how long they have left to work etc. Plus appetite for the actual job (I watched Trawlermen; it's not a job many people are suited for!).

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 24/12/2020 16:31

The equivalent which May had was the WA which BoZo got through in January.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 24/12/2020 16:33

thatsmysanta

Ok 🙂

StealthPolarBear · 24/12/2020 16:33

Ah thank you. Makes sense.
So what has happened with all the sticking points that meant a deal was impossible eg the backstop? Apologies for my ignorance and for my reluctance to read the detail for myself. Would be grateful for people to reply but don't if I am annoying you.

Ifailed · 24/12/2020 16:33

You mean like Grimsby, where the local unemployed won't get involved in harvesting vegetables so we rely on East Europeans to do the work?

Chickydoo · 24/12/2020 16:33

Phew!

StealthPolarBear · 24/12/2020 16:34

Sorry that wasnt aimed at you that's my santa :) aware I am being lazy and expecting people to spoon feed me.

Pepperwort · 24/12/2020 16:34

What idiot said remainers would be disappointed? Did you not get the lesson of restricted freight, or even stoppages, affecting our food supplies!! Not to mention medicines. And if that is what did it then may all the gods bless Macron and France.

It will not be as good as being members, but hopefully it’s a start. It’s much much better than nothing, although there probably will be delays and restrictions.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 24/12/2020 16:36

Though to be fair i meant none that kazzy name/prove

But i deffo did not say that, so fair point still

megletthesecond · 24/12/2020 16:36

"No need for the Brexit board".
Someone hasn't paid much attention the last five years have they Hmm.

Johnson is only happy because he can hand his notice in when he fancies now. He doesn't care about the deal or 99.9% of this country.

nimbuscloud · 24/12/2020 16:37

Erasmus program gone.

ZaZathecat · 24/12/2020 16:38

As one of the hard core remainders, I'm relieved that there is a deal as opposed to the alternative.
