@Bathroom12345 Thanks Bathroom12345. Smile I knew exactly what you meant. Covid is our common enemy, we should unite together to defeat it. Come on Oxford vaccine! Grin

sashagabadon · 25/12/2020 18:17

Agree Defen.
Now Brexit is done maybe Mumsnet needs a a REJOIN topic where furious former remainers can discuss the U.K. rejoining the EU to their hearts content and the rest of us can get on with our lives

nosswith · 25/12/2020 18:33

I recognise that we are never going to rejoin the EU. I wish though we had a Prime Minister worthy of this country so we could have got the best deal possible, not end up having to cave in to the EU as as probably happened.

I would like to be proud of this country again, not ashamed of the worst government in our history, led by a man who will not even tell us how many children he has.

Defenbaker · 25/12/2020 18:54

@sashagabadon A "Rejoin" thread would be a great idea, where like minded people can explore that option.

@nosswith I know what you mean - Bojo does not exactly exude integrity, although at times his positivity can be helpful. I was hoping that Rory would win the leadership contest, but instead he lost, then left the tory party as he said he could not work with BJ. He's a bit of an oddball, but seemed very intelligent and always said that we would leave with a deal, because no parliament would vote to leave without a deal. I think he has an eye for detail, too... perhaps there could be a place for him, if Boris goes at some point?

Peregrina · 25/12/2020 18:55

Get involved in politics then, work to get the Tories out. The party is ruthless with leaders who lose them elections.

Kendodd · 25/12/2020 18:56

I've heard rumours of a rejoin march next summer. If anyone went on the remain marches over the last few years, its be great if there was another one like that. They were all so friendly and peaceful (unlike the awful pro Leave marches packed with violent racists) I don't even think the remain marches had much of a police presence. I hope young people join in (if it happens) and demand they have their rights returned. It's really, really terrible what's been taken from them. Not even letting them have Erasmus just seems spiteful of the government, what possible benefit could it be to us to take that away from them?

ListeningQuietly · 25/12/2020 18:57

The Swivel Eyed Loons (Cash, Chope, Swayne, Lewis, Farage) spent the last 40 years campaigning to get back out of the EU

it would be remiss of us not to emulate their persistence and not spend the next 40 years campaigning to get back IN
[grin}

bellinisurge · 25/12/2020 18:58

I also doubt we will rejoin in my lifetime. However, the idea that I should cheer the most stupid decision we've taken in my 50 plus years is laughable.

I have no intention of "coming together " on Brexit. You get on with it without any input from me. I'll work and pay my taxes and support my daughter in her education. If she chit to leave the country I won't stop her. She has an EU passport still so that might be easier. Or she can stay here and I'd support her doing that.

Kendodd · 25/12/2020 19:02

I recognise that we are never going to rejoin the EU.

I don't.
I think its unlikely this decade but wouldn't be surprised at all if we ended up in the SM and CU.

MarshaBradyo · 25/12/2020 19:05

I don’t think it’s a given that it won’t happen (getting closer again). As younger voters get to vote.

But as someone who voted remain I accept where we are and feel more positive than when no deal was looming. I’ll make a go of it and see what happens.

Kendodd · 25/12/2020 19:06

I have no intention of "coming together " on Brexit

Thing is about coming together or getting behind Brexit or some other bollocks, look at the sort of people you have to stand with (and no, that's not an insult to Leave voters, I'm talking about Tommy Robinson, EDL, Britain First etc)

thecatsatonthewall · 25/12/2020 19:19

@lifestooshort123

You Brexitiers moaned and winged about a democratic vote but stayed here in the UK, hating every govt we ve had since 1973, hating the direction we were moving in but perfectly happy to live here! some even moving to Brussels, becoming MEPs and milking this system you so despised! Don't be such a drama queen! Most leavers haven't moaned and whinged and certainly haven't hated every government since '73! Don't rewrite the narrative to fit your bitter attitude to Brexit - if you value your MH you might want to accept what's happened and make the best of it instead of lashing out.
You've not been listening much if you think the opponents to the EEC/EU have not been whinging since 1973.

Thatcher, Major, Blair, Brown & Cameron have had to deal with the whingers to a democratic vote, some with more success than others, which is why we ended up with a referendum... because the whingers wouldn't accept what happened and definitely didn't try to make the best of it.

What did Major call them? the "Bastards" i believe he called them.

akerman · 25/12/2020 19:25

You can get on with your life now sasha. Who’s forcing you onto any particulate thread?

bellinisurge · 25/12/2020 19:30

I'm in my 50s. I remember the Heath referendum. You obviously weren't paying attention if you think they weren't whining and whinging about it pretty much since then. Let's see if EU supporters get as much time on TV moving forward.

jasjas1973 · 25/12/2020 19:33

The aggression comes from the remainers. Over and over

Nope, the moment the vote happened, leavers chanted "We won" "suck it up" you lost, get over it" and the classic "Move somewhere else..."

..and the too and fro ing of insults has been going on every since.

Leavers after 4.5 years, still cannot come up with tangible benefits, even the fishing argument has now been proven a lie, we are now locked into EU standards, environmental and employment laws....even the car industry has only been given a 6 year reprieve on rules of origin but look at what has been lost!

However, because the UK seems to have capitulated over soooo much, it does give me hope we will become every closer.

jasjas1973 · 25/12/2020 19:34

Bell it was Wilson, Heath took us in.

Mistigri · 25/12/2020 19:36

People are making the mistake of seeing a deal as an end rather than a beginning. This is the new normal - bickering about perceived slights from Macron when on 1st January French customs, veterinary and phytosanitary officers implement the new regime, bickering about fish, bickering about the level playing field, bickering about how rules of origin are going to operate (hint: not in the best interests of U.K. exporters). Most of all, bickering about the operation of the Irish protocol, and with Scottish nationalists who think (with good reason) that the wishes of Scottish voters have been ignored.

Like it or not, to escape the EU ecosystem you'd need to change geography - and that will take a few million years ;)

bellinisurge · 25/12/2020 19:37

@jasjas1973 , that's what I mean- the Heath Referendum that took us in. I remember it. And the swivel eyed mob have been bitching and moaning about it ever since. Until Grifter In Chief came along and the Con was On.

bellinisurge · 25/12/2020 19:38

Sorry, kept us in not took us in

Peregrina · 25/12/2020 20:32

I have no intention of "coming together " on Brexit. You get on with it without any input from me.

Exactly my thoughts. You have got your Brexit, you can do the heavy lifting to make it work. I wouldn't obstruct you, but it's all yours.

Bellini - it was Wilson's Referendum. I worked as a Poll clerk on the day. Wilson had the same problem with rebellious MPs as the Tory leaders have had. He made much of 'the terms being right' playing on re-negotiating Heath's terms. But he was a sight craftier than Cameron and didn't call a Referendum without being pretty sure he'd win.

bellinisurge · 25/12/2020 20:54

Fair do @Peregrina

jasjas1973 · 25/12/2020 21:42

There is nothing remainers or leavers can do to make it work.... we are all in the hands of our political masters, until 2024.

We are in for a very long haul of constant negotiation, as Mistigri explained, this is far from the end.

akerman · 25/12/2020 21:54

At least there is a review in 2024, which is a glimmer of hope.

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 28/12/2020 20:56

@Thismustbelove

First step on the road to Irish reunification

I wish ppl would stop saying this as a fact. It is something the majority of people in both NI and ROI do NOT want. The ROI cannot afford nor do they want to take on NI’s economic drain and ppl in NI don’t want to lose their NHS healthcare.

Reunification is an idealist notion only.

Polls show that Irish people do not want it for practical reasons.

Bullshit. There is consistently a majority - and quite a big one - in polls in the South for reunification and a growing number in the North for it...which is only going to go in one direction. The Irish government funding Erasmus and part funding the new infrastructure in the North are all small steps towards the reunification we will see within the decade.

And quite frankly, any Irish person who would prefer to see their country carved up and part of it u set their oppressors' rule should be ashamed. Their ancestors would be turning in their graves.

Irish citizens in the North are just as Irish as those in the South and people would do well to remember that.
